What type of fan was used on a 69 L78 Nova ?
I have seen a 4 blade non-clutch fan and a 772 7 blade clutch fan mentioned not 100% sure ?

I have seen only a 4 blade non clutch setup on early cars and then a switch to a 5 blade non clutch set up later in the year. I have never seen a 772 clutch style used on a L/78 Nova. Ask Rowdy Rat to help out too..BKH

Thanks for the info my car was built in May 69 so I assume it would have a 5 blade fan. Do these fans have a part # and a date code ?

Martin,

The 3947824 was replaced Mar of 1970. The 1970 L78 fan switched back and forth with 2 different part numbers for a 5 blade fan. Which is typical depending on the source of the part. Have you check an assembly manual for 69?

Those part#'s you are listing, are not Fan part#'s.
*3947824 is a 1969 Assembly line B/B Deepgroove Fan Pulley.Used on Special Hi-Perf solid lifter engines.
*3976060 is a 1970 Assembly line B/B Deepgroove Fan Pulley.Used on Special Hi-Perf Solid lifter engines.
The Fan is a different part # altogether.

Mr70,

Well, I guess it was late. I just looked up the number Martin listed "It's 3947824EV" in the prevoius note, in the parts number history DB. When I looked at the 1970 Assembly manual. I saw the two other numbers I mentioned. I should have quoted them. They are 3939001 and 3947128. If I would have looked closer I would have seen the 6060 was listed above the blade.

Thanks,
Greg

There are two part numbers for the L-78 fan listed in the 1969 AIM. The first fan, part number 3947128 (later superceded by part number 6270076) was a four blade unit having an 18" diameter and did not utilize a fan clutch. The second fan, 3939001, (part number also superceded and became 3990936) is listed as a five blade unit with an 18" diameter and again, did not use a fan clutch. I don't have the AIM handy, but if someone would check, I believe that the revision on the sheet shows approximately April, 1969. Remember that the revision date listed in the AIM was when the document was updated (not when the actual change was made), but the actual production line change would most likely have been close to this date.

Hi I am working on my 69 Nova l78 that was built October 1968. From my research I see that it takes the 4 blade fan (which I now have) part# 3947128. I thought I needed the one inch spacer but now that I'm assembling everything the fan is so close to the radiator the one inch spacer will not work. Can anybody tell me if there was supposed to be a spacer with the 4 blade fan. Thanks

Contrary to all the repro catalogs and other mis-information; the L78 and L34 came with a staggered 5 blade fan...there was never a spacer. I understand the references to AIM info...but, I have never seen or heard of a factory 4 blade on any big block car. happy to be shown different..

I need to go back and look at the assy. manual again but,
I was thinking low HP (L-34) came with the 4 blade and L-78's
We're the 5 blade

Both engines used the same fan...these fans were notorious for the noise they made as the rpm's went up...most of them were replaced back in the day with a flex fan. Interesting thing is, they actually worked pretty well at cooling the BB motors.

Again, there is a lot of stuff out there about what fan is correct...based on all the info I have seen, including survivor cars, there was never a 4 blade on these engines.

I'm with Tom, in all my years I've never once seen a 4 blade fan on either the L34 or L78 Novas.

Does anybody out there have an original early build 69 l78 Nova? Sure would be nice too see what an original car had.

Not a 69, but some looks at an original 1970 if that helps.

FWIW the gm nova product information program shows 69 396 with a 5 blade but 1970 396 375 hp first jobs with a 4 blade , heres a pic.

The repop five blade fan is the way to go. Better than paying the big bucks for a original, if you can find one... The thing I did was touch-up the rivets with a little satin black, looks better.

Chev eventually released a dual bolt pattern of the BB Nova fan, had 8 mounting holes in the hub. They are out there in the used parts space

The reason for no 7 blade Nova fans is because there's no room for it between the water pump and the radiator. The 7 blade fans use the clutch and it needs more space....As far as I know, there's no 7 blade fan that bolts directly to the water pump.
