Hello to the board! I have a pair of "HQ" broadcast code ZL-1 front coil springs on my car and I was wondering if you guys could advise me what to do with them. They do not belong on the front of my car and I am replacing them next week. I used to have both spring tags but I only have one left. I have owned the car for about 23 years and both tags were there when I bought the car. Of course we know a lot more about these things today.

My question is, would these springs have been specified for any other application other than ZL-1? I figure an all aluminum BB high performance Camaro has some pretty unique requirements but hopefully someone here can add some insight. I have mixed feelings about selling them on ebay but that might be the way to go. Any thoughts?

Mark, those HQ springs were not limited to the ZL1. I have seen them in SS396's and iron block COPO cars. They may have even been used in some small block applications with heavy duty suspensions with lots of options. Springs were not specific to one model of car, they were specific to the vehicle weight. By the way, is the tag lt. blue with black letters and part #3955724?. Put them on Ebay and see what they bring, may not bring much more than the cost of new springs but you never know..................RatPack..................... ..

Yes it has the blue tag with the black numerals. I have to get it wet to see them as there is some white/gray dirt covering the tag. Easy to see the numbers when wet but I don't want to do that too many times. It is kind of fragile after all these years under the car. I will probably just list them and see how it goes. Nobody here needs them and niether do I. I did not realy think they would bring very much money as it would be difficult if not impossible to verify the provenance and I figure brand new springs are available from various sources. Thanks,

I would be interested if the springs are not to rusty. When you get them out post or email me with your asking price.

Mark,

I am compiling research on thinks like spring labels and the like? Any chance of getting a picture of the tag. That way you do not need to wet it too often? the HQ should have 9 coils. What coil (top to bottom) is the tag on? Is the paint still visible? Is it gloss black?

The HQ spring is 1 of about 27 springs that was used on the Nova. The options were all added into the total weight of the vehicle. The computer then selected the correct spring for the car and printed it on the Broadcast sheet. Why are you replacing them?

Thanks,
Greg

Greg, the wife has me all to herself for the long weekend but I did manage to get a photo of the tag out to you so you have mail. The new Eaton springs arrived and I got one rear spring installed before I had to put the tools away for a few days. I will count the coils when I get them out but I am sure these are "HQ". I do not know about what paint was on them. I just cleaned them up and hit them with a black rattle can before I reinstalled them (Driver amature resto). When I took the car in for an alignment they said the front end was too high for the specs I wanted to run. That comment combined with the harsh ride/shackles I always had was enough to convince me to replace all 4 springs and the hand made shackles with quality replacements. I am expecting a stock ride height after I switch the springs. Let me know what you think of the picture. If anyone else wants to see it, click on "Attachment" for a smaller view.

Mark,

I understand about the time with the wife. I did get the email. Picture looks great. I understand that the ride height is suposed to be a little high in the front.

Greg, just an update, they do have 9 coils. The replacements are about the same height but have 10 coils.
