Check the fuel line, speedo cable exit hole in the firewall, engine perches on subframe, rad support, heater core cover, rear frame rails for dual exhaust reinforc. plates, tach redline if it's a tach dash, etc.....
What's the trim tag data? Color, interior codes etc... paperwork?
Hard to put a price on it, they aren't that rare - total production of 396/375 cars is 9,900 +/-, but they are desirable. The correct engine items can be very expensive, the carb, dist, alt. smog, etc... is in the thousands!!
I haven't seen the car yet ,maybe tonite.
I doubt it has any paper work,if I can I'll get a few pic's too.
maybe this will be a car I'll get thats not just plain jane!

Hi will:
I keep forgetting to bring in my paint chart to decipher what color 79 is, but here goes on the rest of the codes.
the 733 is believe is custom black bench seat interior, the 02A is the build date of 1st week of Feb, the A means that the remainder of the interior is black - ie; headliner, door panels, kick panels etc... - the 3 most likely means that the car has 3 out of the 3 possible exterior decorations which are: drip rail moldings, door frame moldings, and body side moldings. The car is not a vinyl top car, however it is possible to have drip rail moldings without a vinyl top. Let me know if it has rocker moldings, ie; exterior decor option. Hope this helps a little.
If the car comes with a pair of NOS 1/4's, buy the car for the 1/4's and sell em to me /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

MikeA corrected me;
733 is black vinyl buckets, 732 is custom bench seat. 79 is indeed rallye green for '69, I'm going off of my '70 Nova charts, and I believe the interior codes are the same for the '69 Novas.
I like rallye green, buy the whole car and sell it to me /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Any idea where the Green 69 SS Nova came from. Does the person also have a Silver SS to match it. I know of a pair that was bought new in Freeport Illinois and sold as a pair to a person out east about 20 years ago. Would love to find the Silver SS. Had Deuces Wild painted under (4) Deuce palying cards spread out as a poker hand. Now that car was FINE. Both were BBC cars.

I personally can't tell that this car is a BB, or L78 if it is a BB. I don't know exactly how to determine if those engine perches are for SB or BB. It does have all three of the body decorations like the trim tag shows, and is rallye green. I'm not sure what someone was trying to do with the drivers side 1/4 panel?

Great, the pictures work now. I don't see enough to tell for sure that it is a big block car, but the signs do look good. The single fuel line tells you that it is not an SS350 or a 396-350 car. It could be a 396-375 car though. Where is the radiator support? There are lots of clues on it. If you can get into it, I would pull the back seat out to look for a broadcast sheet. You need to take some good wire cutters to get the sheet out without shredding it.

The GM 1/4's are the only ones that go all the way up the sail panel to the lead line. Novas do not have any build sheets or broadcast sheets above the gas tank, in fact, I don't know that I've ever seen a Nova build sheet. Like bbdon said, pull out the bottom of the back seat and check the underside corners for one of the broadcast sheets. If you find it, look for code Z26 for SS, and L78 for the 396/375hp. If you find a sheet, you should also find code B84 for body side molding, B90 for door frame molding, and maybe C07 for the drip rail moldings.

Look for a larger radiator opening. The radiator for a big block car is wider, and so is the opening for it. It is about two inches larger to the driver's side. The bottom part is cut differently to allow the radiator to sit a little lower, and there are holes drilled on top to retain the rubber flap. There is also a nut welded to the support to hold one of the side brackets for the radiator. Look for it from the front, below the radiator cap.
I am going to give him a deposit tonite,I'll problably take some of the loose parts with me and pick up every thing else when he gets it together, friday or saterday.

QUOTE:
"I am conviced that this is a 375 hp car,I bought the car and it is now at my garage,it did have the GM 1/4's,and it only has 61000 miles on it.
the I bought it from told me he would call the previuos owner and see if he can track down the orginal block.
the car was found in a field in 1980 with a blown motor and 23600 miles on the clock,it was bought and a new 396 dropped in and driven for a few years then sold to some guy's that drag raced it for a few years, they started striping the car for fiberglass and a tubb job,but lost interest before cutting anything.thats when this guy bought it in 84-85,it's been in the garage ever since.
it's nice to see it on its way to a restore again and not heading to the crusher." END QUOTE.
BTW; After studying the pics on your site, I see the car still has the trans crossmember in it. Check the underside where the bolts go through to the transmount, and let me know whether there are two oval openings or one square opening.

JJ's 396/375 horse 69 Nova came with a sheet. What's the difference between a build sheet and broadcast sheet. I know what my Chevelle build sheet looks like, but the Nova's is smaller, but lists all the options. Is this what you call a broadcast sheet????
Peter /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif
YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY
08-23-2002, 05:55 PM
Pete;
Yes, the body broadcast sheet is approx. 5" x 8", and lists the frame sequence #, build date, body #, interior code, and then in the option boxes it lists some of the options - but not all of them. I think those options that relate to the body are listed, you usually don't find things like J50/J51 for power disc brakes, but will find N10 for dual exhaust (extra plate on frame rail), B84 for side moldings, M20 for the trans (different exit hole in firewall for speedo cable), and sometimes L78 for the engine - I haven't seen small block codes though. I am starting to think that there were different broadcast sheets for different areas of the car, but that is just a theory because when we find multiple broadcast sheets in a given car they have always matched each other. I'm always looking for more!

the cross member has two oval holes, but this is problably not the orginal has i've been told the car last had an auto in it for the drags.
the previous owner told me it was a 375 car he has know the car since his friend accired it in 1980 .
does have the frame plate
also just pulled a slip of paper from the rear seat about 3X7
YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY
08-24-2002, 01:17 AM
Will;
The two small holes in the crossmember indicate a small block, regardless of trans type, (the car is definitely a manual shift car). If a prior owner installed an a/t trans, I would assume that it was a TH350 since a TH400 requires a completely different crossmember (more of a 'tubular' design). Once you get the broadcast sheet out of the seat, 1st make sure that the body number on the sheet matches the last six digits of the body number on the trim tag. I have seen several instances where the wrong broadcast sheet is found in the original seats, although this probably indicates that the line worker was following the codes on the sheet taped to the firewall, installed the correct seat type into the car, but did not select the seat specific identified to that particular car.
Then look at the various option boxes, it will say L34 for 396/350hp, or L78 for the 375hp version if it was a big block. If the car was a small block, there will most likely be no engine code designation on the sheet. If the car was a console car, there will be a code on the sheet (for the tunnel piercings), you should definitely have the B80, B84, B90, (I think), and especially Z26 for the Super Sport option, A51 for the buckets, M20 for the 4speed, N10 for the dual exhaust, and probably some more since the car seems to be nicely optioned. Let us know the codes, and we'll let you know what they mean.
Even if it turns out not to be a big block car, it would be a nice car when done right.
the paper I found didn't look like the above attachment, this looks more like a tag type as it is thinker than normal paper,I didn't see anyother paper under the seat.
I have a line on the orginal block,it is said that it was sleeved and put into a camaro for dragracing.ihaven't talked to the man that pulled it from the car.Iam thinking of a title search ,but that requires me to retitle the car in my name yet I am not sure I want to keep it.
althought It does remind me of the really green 69 SS 350 nova I had at 18.
oh well time will tell!!!
it has the large opening core support,3/8 fuel line, exhaust plate, and the speedo comes out next to the dist.(is that indcation of big block?)
I hope to be able to locate some previous owner has the car is supposed to be a local car.

I believe the paper you found will show the actual assy date, the trim code, the body sequence number, and maybe one other number. I have seen these 'cards' but don't know what they were used for.
The speedo cable exit hole is only indicative of the trans type, not engine size.
To my knowledge, you don't have to retitle the car to do a title search in MD. I have done searches for cars that I have never owned /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Marlin,
I have seen three different type of sheets.
1 - The Fisher Body sheet used during body assembly. Mostly found under the rear seat which was installed before it left Fisher. Included mostly RPO's that required Fisher to pierce the body or weld on extra parts (moulding, rear swaybar, floor shifter, defroster).
2- The CHASSIS BROADCAST COPY. Which had codes for Engine compartment, drivetrain, and suspension.
3- The BODY BROADCAST COPY. Which had codes for anything that was in (radio, lights, cluster, wiring, floormats), poked thru the body to the drivers compartment (Speedo cable, master cylinder, steering column, antenna), or was applied to the body (tire pressure decal, emissions decal, paint stripe, moulding).
Some codes are on both Body and Chassis sheets. The 70 Nova Broadcast Copy's are done on older systems that the 70 Chevelle and Camaro's. Willow Run switched to the same system a few years later.

I have only seen the bigger sheets for '72 and newer Novas. The '70 body broadcast sheets that have never show things like AM radio, mats, etc... Interestingly, they also don't show the F41 code which requires those special brackets to be welded into the floorboards for the rear sway bar.

Marlin,
You are correct the small Fisher body sheets (like above) do not show Radio and Mats because they were installed later. The BODY BROADCAST COPY (attached) did show them.
Curious that the Fisher body sheets did not show F41. I wonder if they started with more than one base configuration and only included minor modifications.....

Well, after almost two years of research, & 4 title searches, the ownership history has taken a twist! I was informed by all prior owners that a particular person named Elmo (deceased) in Maryland was the original owner of this '69 SS Nova. I was continueing my research to determine the original selling dealership.
After receiving the lastest title search results, I have found out that Elmo was not the original owner, nor did the car sell new in Maryland! Elmo's dad Elmer was the first person in Maryland to own this Nova, purchasing it from Sunderland Chev. in Baltimore on 8-17-70. Elmer 'gifted' the car to his son Elmo on 5-19-75, although it is known that the son drove the car since '70.
According to the search results, this Nova came from PA! The build date of the car is Feb. 1st week, and the original PA title date is Feb. 28, 1969. The title that was transferred from PA to MD has 'National Bank & Trust Co' as the owner, possibly indicating that the was traded in or repo'd as there are no liens listed on it. So, my search continues to find the original dealership in PA - unfortunately, PA does not have nearly the title info that MD does, but you never know what you can turn up http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I installed those pesky trunklid bars, and am mocking up the console hump. Then switched gears to get the Yenko Deuce buttoned back up for the season! Another year, and a couple more title searches done on this car. PA has nothing but the bank title info, same as I got from MD.
I noticed on one sheet from a prior MD title search, that had an overlapping corner of another sheet, that I didn't get all of the sheets of info. So, a few months ago I wrote a nice note, and copied the suspect sheet - asking for a complete copy. What they sent was excellent!
Sunderland Chev. was not in Sunderland, MD like I assumed - but rather in Lemoyne, PA. This Sunderland Chev. received the reasigned title from the Bank in Harrisburg, and within days reasigned it to Norm Griffith's Auto Sales in Baltimore - (possibly a subsidiary?). So, now I know how the car made it's way from PA to MD, and where the first MD owner purchased it from = Norm Griffith's.
Now, I need to find out who had this car from 2/28/69 till the bank acquired it on 7/8/70.
The search continues, but I have a hunch that the original dealership may have indeed been Sunderland Chev.

This might be the final nail in the coffin! After a few more title info request to the PA DMV, they have replied that the first owner info is unavailable due to a system error. A few phone calls netted nothing except a dazed response that some records were lost. So, it appears that I've exhausted the DMV's, and am now chasing people leads - apparently Bill Miller of Carlisle Events worked at Sunderland for several years.
I'm going with Sunderland Chevrolet as the original dealer. There is a Sunderland Chevrolet in Jerseyville, IL, and I stopped by on my way to SCR8 to pick up some dealer decals - just have to cut off the Jerseyville portion http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Spoke to the nephew of the first MD buyer last week, he was with Elmo when he test drove the Nova in Baltimore back in August of '70. He tells me that it was an L78, but does not believe that they have any pictures of the engine. He reports that Elmo had the engine completely redone at the House of Speed in Baltimore, and soon after had 4.56's put in the rear - no wonder the car was parked in '72 from too many tickets http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Apparently, the car is a rally wheel car, not the XT version I thought/hoping for. For now, I'll keep the XT look going - since that's my favorite look, but will eventually put the rally's on it.

You didn't think I had given up on this did ya? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Update:
I'm always thinking of ideas on how to find prior owners, or dealers. However, certain events can make it very difficult. One unfortunate event is when a car is repo'd early in it's life - such is the case with Benjamin's '69 Nova SS. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif The last title on record with the PA DMV shows a bank as the owner, that's not good bec/ the bank is gone as is the dealer that they sent it to in order to sell it for them.
One assumption that I'm making is that a bank that repo's a given car would send the car to the dealer that sold the car originally, saving the bank the trouble of selling/auctioning off the car. The dealer that received Benjamin's car within a few days of the bank titling it, was Sunderland Chevrolet in Lemoyne, PA - within miles of the bank which was located in Harrisburg, PA. Sunderland Chevrolet is no longer in business.
So, the next strategy is to find ex-employees, which I did through the help of a guy in New England who is the original owner of a '70 SS Chevelle from Sunderland. I spoke to an ex-salesperson, but didn't get very far. Late last week I was doing some more searching, and found a site showing the political contributions for some Republican campaigns (sorry Schoneye!). One such contributor was named Sunderland who made the contributions in the name of his car dealership, Sun Motor Cars (BMW, Merc.Benz & Porsche) located in the Mechanicsburg, PA area. I confirmed today that the owner of Sun Motor Cars is indeed the previous owner of Sunderland Chevrolet, and that they are willing to research the old Nova and see what they have/recall!
The search continues.....

Marlin, while your at it I'll send you info on my 70 L78 Nova which was sold new in that area ( have the title and bank lean paperwork that shows it was originally titled in July 70 in Lititz PA. I think?) spoke to the 2nd owner who bought it off a used car lot, Title search went back to that owner ('76) that was I all I got. I have hit nothing but dead ends. Any bird doggin tips are appreicated. SULLY

It's been a while! Benjamin is a bit older now so I put him to work on his car. Over the last few years ago we pretty much finished the underside, and had the transmission and rear completely overhauled by Jody's Transmissions here in PA (well recommended) and got it back down on 4 wheels. This year we plan to pull the frame, rebuild and reinstall.
Kids grow so fast - I'm running out of time. Benjamin will be 10 this year!

So, found some of the latest pics - making progress. We usually make about 1 large order of parts per year, just received this year's order and our goal is to fire the engine sometime this year. That's a tall order given what you see in these pics! But, nothing ventured, nothing gained. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif
No frame!
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h68/aacorp/100_3067.jpg
Clean frame! Lots of undercoating on this car, kept the frame really nice. Can still see the forming marks on it from the factory:
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h68/aacorp/100_3069.jpg
Lots of green overspray on this car - from front to back, sometimes all the way into the driveshaft tunnel:

Well, another year - and unfortunately the car doesn't look much different! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/frown.gif However, we have more parts stashed and Ben learned how to weld this past weekend. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif We plan to paint the frame, firewall and underside with single stage black with flattener, and then spray the rally green overspray. Then hope to install the frame and then the engine / trans.... aggressive plan since racing will start again in April!

We sprayed the frame, firewall, and the front portion of the underside - enough to do the rallye green over spray and install the frame. Thanks to Brian and Frank for the PPG codes for the black and flattener. This won't be a concourse job, (otherwise it would never get done!), but Ben is happy and has a smile on his face - that's all that matters. We need some trans hardware and then we should be close to putting the frame back in and installing the engine/trans! We'll see <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/eek.gif

Ben got comfortable with the HVLP detail gun as he duplicated the rally green over spray onto the floors, fire wall and cowl. This car had a TON of over spray on it, with very little black coverage - so we laid it on pretty heavy.

Cool that the kids are getting involved. I was doing the same with my Dad at that age. I've got a tip though.... get your son to wear a respirator when handling that HVLP gun!
I didn't worry about such things when I was a kid either, and I suffered no ill effects. I still do skip the safety equipment most times if it's just a quick rattle can paint job or something even though I know it's wrong (just lazy, I guess).
It's not a bad idea to get them into the mindset of using proper safety gear early on. Hopefully that was just a staged photo and he wasn't spraying. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

Well, we decided to put a 4 speed transmission into Danny's '67 Camaro RS, and the trans we had already put into Ben's Nova was actually the correct case for a '67. So....we got a 660 box rebuilt by Jody's Transmissions here in PA (highly recommend!!) and then swapped them out this past Sunday afternoon. I thought it would be a good experience for Ben to see how most transmissions are changed - laying on your back, under a car, no headroom or arm room, muscling things around - cursin and swearin while thinking why am I doing this!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif It went way too easy btw, we were done in 2 hours.

Still at it..... Once we get the welding / grinding work done we can install the gas tank and transition our efforts to firing it up! Ben likes the plasma cutter, although we moved to a cut off wheel on a grinder for precision. We are saving the original quarters, so made some strategic cuts on the tail light panel!

are those aluminum rear brake drums?
YENKO DEUCE REGISTRY

Yea! They are from a '78 Malibu, had them laying around so we slid them on. I broke the original drums to pieces hammering them off the rear - a lot of cursing & swearing as well!

I think it's going to ride like a brick!!! But, Ben will def maintain his 'coolest car in High School' reputation - his black '01 Trans Am, WS6 with Ram Air is cool, but a TR'd '69 Nova with ladders is unheard of these days!!!

We used PPG single stage gloss black with flattening agent - I'm not overly thrilled with the firewall, but the frame is nice and the core support / fender liners look really nice. It took us a few tries to get the mixing combination figured out.
Never heard from the guy at Sun Motors again, not surprising since I can't imagine the old chevy records from Sunderland are stashed 20 miles away at the Sun Benz/Porsche dealership....

Progress.... It's in the booth, should be rally green in a week or two.
We've been working on vinyl top moldings and just finished the body side moldings last night. Moving on to refinishing the original rear SS panel, original grill and headlight frames....

He's complaining about Ben getting a big block with dual quads through the hood versus his small block with a single Holley, but Ben's car was originally a big block and Danny's Camaro was originally a small block... :dunno: I told him he's getting a stout 327 build by ole timer Pete Serio, and we are swapping the PG for an M20, and prob going with a 3.73 posi instead of the 3.08 open..... and it's an original RS. What's not to like!

For those not on FB, its coming along.....
- Many hours aligning the sheetmetal so we could install:
- Marker light, eyebrow and hood lip moldings
- RH body side moldings, after many hours of aligning, string lining, marking, drilling - good thing I restored the original moldings several weeks ago!
- LH body side moldings went on much quicker than the RH, experience.... :D
- RH and LH wing windows, run channel, window fuzzies, side glass and frame moldings....
….
…. Wow

We got a little sidetracked when Ben's 2001 Trans Am decided to hydro lock after a freak set of circumstances (car only has 65k miles and it occurred on startup, not over revving...), and sent rod #6 right through the side of the block. We just brought that home 2 nights ago, he learned a lot on that project too!!!

Might as well install a shift kit (muuuuch more involved versus the ole TH350's!!!), a trans cooler, new flywheel and a new torque converter (3600 RPM stall... but, he's learning what it's like to drive that on the street! :D ) Upgraded to a hi perf fuel pump, 42# injectors, new pump wiring, etc.... my bank account feels like it went on forever... But, that smile after it was tuned and hit 'the number' on the dyno pull.... priceless!

The Trans Am is the gift that keeps giving....to him!! I decided to just install a fully built transmission back in March, this thing put 420HP to the rear tire and there was no way the original trans w/ a shift kit was going to handle that. The fab 9" rear with 4.10's and new wheels / stickies are next. He ran a 12.20 ET last Friday night, in good air that'll be in the high 11's and def in the 11's with the 4.10 gear over the stock 3.23's.
What kid drives an 11 second street car to High School every day.....

So, we did the Eastwood show with both Novas, and are registered for the Motorama Show in Harrisburg, PA next February (just Ben's Nova...) hoping someone will walk by and recognize it from when it was sold new in the Harrisburg, PA area.
Scored a cool license plate from the local speed shop in Lemoyne, PA where Sunderland Chevrolet was located.
The T/A indeed hit the 11's back in October!! So, it's only a matter of time b4 it spits that dinky 7.5" rear with 3.23's and worn out posi.... Upgrade arrived, suspension stuff (control arms, upper & lower, sway bar, panhard bar and track arm...all adjustable units) arrives today.
I keep telling him to go to college already, it will be cheaper!! He's a really great kid, can't believe it all went this fast....
