Does anyone know how the racing will be run this year? Last year their was no tech inspection, passengers were allowed and the Supercars ran in their own heat. Will the format be similar this year?

Ok folks, I know it might have been best to bring this up say 2 months ago, and I see the members attending are getting internet capabilities, so how bout hooking up small web cams to those lap tops you all brought with you so those of us at work can see some real time shots. would be esp neat if it coud be done for the Track Time.

Just got back from the racing. Several of the cars ran; 12 i think???. I'm sure someone else can remember the exact amount. Most of the cars got 4 passes, if they wanted, so it was pretty good. Couple of people ran career bests (I will let them tell you guys about it when they get in tho.) As for me in the '98 SS, 13.6 was the best I could muster, the 6-speed was just a little too difficult for me to launch. I did manage to get big brother both times tho.......( How do you like them oranges?!?!)

I'll go into more detail in the morning, but for now, here's a teaser (see attachment).

Rob, gotta love those twelves /ubbthreads/images/icons/cool.gif . With a little more traction you've got a 12.5 car there I think! /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Rob, can't see if your front tire on the right looks the same. I think you were outgunned before you started, but great run all the same! Congrats!!!

Yeah, outgunned to say the least! I take it you aren't impressed with the 2.0X 60' time!/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Just so everyone knows Rob was kind of forced into a good run since Tom had turned in a 12.9 about 2 hours earlier. Tom did have a little more than his 15 min. before son set a new record. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Dad's record run. (see attachment)

Actually there was one more record broken in the Clary househould this weekend, and i think it might even be a world record. If only I had a scanner I would post the record Rob and I set when we raced our late model SSs for the second time. I think we set the record for slowest combined 60 foot time EVER! I cant seem to find my time slip from that run, but I think he had a 2.7ish and i was 2.8ish. Now thats slooooooooooooooooow. Luckily when we came back to the pits dad had just ran his 12.9, so not many people were asking how we did.

P.S. I got the win b/c of big brothers red light. /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Nice!!! I will definately have to check that out when i get home. I guess he just got a little nervous seeing little brother next to him around the 1/8th mile. Too bad he missed that shift, it was gonna be real close.

I guess little bro took the title for "best reaction time" of the day, with his .502 in his '98 SS w/6-speed! I had a couple of red lights early, followed by a measly .542.

I guess there is only one more question to ask.

It was very cool to see "Little Hoss" and some of the other Super Cars running at the same track which Fred Gibb , Dick Harrell and others raced at over thirty years ago. /ubbthreads/images/icons/cool.gif

What kind of times did the 2002 "ZL1" turn ???

Charley Lillard

I think my best was about 13.60@107. I thought I would let Tom Clary drive once since he had just put in the best Family time but he screwed up worse than me. My best time a few weeks ago was 13.40's@110. I think Murphy ran some 13.00's@110 also. I think the best moment was when Barnhart's ZL1 got loose from the Trailer and was heading for the pasture. I will try to post some pics if I don't have to shrink them forever.

From what I have read here Barnhart is the original owner of his ZL1, and that is AWESOME! Can anyone share his history with the ZL1? I can't tell if it is red or Hugger Orange by the pics. Was his car known in the race world back then? Did he ever blow up the original motor? What gave him the foresight to keep such a special car after all thoes years? Any feedback would be appreicated. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Charley Lillard

I think Barnhart is the only orig. owner of a ZL1 and I think he won a Championship back in 70-71 ? It is a Orange 4 speed that used to run 9.20's. Now, just playing around he is running 10.80's. He has the orig. engine at home. lifts the front wheels pretty well. Don't loan him your car though.

Frank,
He purchased the car new from Fred Gibb Chevrolet for something like $7,200.00 which was quite a sum back then.

He is quite a local legend in the Western Suburbs/ Chicago land. I used to hear stories about him and the car running at Union Grove,Wisconsin, on a regular basis, way before I could even drive.

It was great to see them at the reunion.

Grudge match between Jerry and Bill -- Jerry said he was going to run the Deuce until it broke. In the previous round Bill beat Jerry's Le Mans sYc when the transmission failed. The Deuce tried to ingest the hood insulation on the previous run but still won when Rob Clary pulled a red light.

I see you made it home safely! I now have a new favorite picture... /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif So, did you go straight from the airport to the shop and pull out the red car for a drive?!;)

I wish! It was a beautiful sunny day, too. Still a couple of irritating little things to be fixed before it's ready to go. I'm hoping to get it out this weekend.

How long did it take you to get the rubber off the back of the Camaro? (see attachment)

I'll have a CD with a 100 or so shots sent to you by this weekend (I hope). Then I'll get to staging the burnout in front of Buckingham Palace I promised Stuber and Holub!

The pictures and accounts you guys have posted of the SCR reunion are downright awesome. It is like a trip back in time. Were only the Supercars allowed at the track? It would be a long trip for me but I'm definetly considering it for next year now! /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Here's a longer run down of Sunday's events.

We all headed out to MAR at about 7:20am, in a convoy of trucks/trailers, and arrived a about 8:45am. We were given our own parking area, and our own lane. They were having there regular Sunday program, so we basically had our own class. We got to run a total of 4 times, with the last run coming at 1pm or so. It was a pretty good day for racing, which started off with sprinkles of rain. Supercars in attendance were:

Ken Boje - '68 Gibb Camaro
Ken Barnhart - '69 ZL-1 Camaro
Gary Crawford - '69 Yenko Camaro
Bill Hunter - '69 Yenko Camaro
Tom Clary - '69 Yenko Camaro
Jerry Albert - '70 Yenko Deuce
Mo Wiggs - '83 Yenko Camaro
Charley Lillard - '02 ZL-1 Camaro

Barnhart was in the 10's, Albert ran some low 13's, but I'm not sure what everyone else was running/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif?! Anyone know?

Well, not so sure about that, newbie. The racing was at Gateway Intl. last year, which is basically right across the interstate, and the turn out of racers was about the same. There doesn't seem to be a huge amount of interest in the "go" part of the show.

COPO
09-25-2002, 11:56 PM
Rob, I know there were a few additional folks who would have raced this year if it had been at Gateway. Since I was heading east to go home, I wasn't able to add the additional 2 hours to my trip and still get home in time. I'd vote to go back to the racing on Sat. evening if the show is not on a holiday weekend and on Sunday morning if it is over a 3-day weekend. Nonetheless, we had a GREAT time at the show and will be back next year. Wish I could have made the racing this year, sounds like there were some awesome runs.

Charley:

You are right, there would have been a couple more show if it had been easier to get to, like at Gateway. But, I think being Sunday morning hurt a little, and being across town, and not having the extra day to travel (like on a Labor Day weekend), etc. Also, we have to determine if the cruise is a do again, to the same location or otherwise, and guage how much interest there is in the racing itself. I don't think there will ever be enough interested parties to warrant a track rental, like on a Sunday, but we have kicked it around...I for one would go for it, but that's just me!/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

There are very few cars on the planet that can run in the 12s without headers. Good job Rob - I wish I went to the track this year to see you run.

You bet!!!! Congrats again Rob. You've been trying for years and it could'nt have happened to a better person or at better place. 12's on poly's is a very difficult thing to do. Just ask about 100 people that go to the Pure Stock Drags every year, and the 1500 people that come to watch, just to see it done!
