No VIN, no body #, no drivetrain #'s, no mention of documentation, but lots of pics. /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif

You are exactly right! with the claim of being a double copo, i thought there would be at least some info to be able to authenticate the car. i would love to look at it, but i am in virginia and that car is in nevada and that won't work very well. i just thought i'd post it here when i found the ad. are there any board members in nevada that know anything about this car or anyone that can offer any insight into this car?

This copo has been for sale for some time on one of the classified sites for $46k. The owner belongs to a group called Reno musclecars.

It looks like one I saw in Reno a couple years ago. It was a LA built car and on the top of the firewall on pass side was the remains of the vacumn valve bracketfor a AC car that goes under the cowl panel.. In the pics I can almost see the bracket in the pics.

Tim,
Are you saying that this would be the first documented and verified Van Nuys built COPO Camaro?

copolocater

No just saying ITS REALLY RED !!! /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif No confirmation on it being a real copo.

Oh I get it now, that went right over my head /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif The only Red/Red L72 real COPO that I know of is Floyd's 'Red427' in Florida.

Were COPO 9561's ever produced in the Van Nuys plant?

No documented car has been found.

If one is ever found and documented, I for one would be surprised to see it with such an early build date.

I challenged the guy to come on here and defend himself since he feels we all dont know what we are talking about. I very well doubt it that he'll show up.

I got the same numbers in reply to my email. Along with "I don't know the car's history. As I am sure you know the 9561 didn't have the VIN records like the 9560. I am sure you know the interpretation of the date codes." Damn, LA build? Is it possible? /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif

So if Jim Mattison said some LA COPOs were built, it is possible but without any other kind of documentation we are assuming that this car is guilty until proven innocent? I have a mind to make him an offer with inspection, I could use a trip to Nevada anyway.

Just ask the guy to send a closeup pic of the firewall above the heater box. The area I'm talking about is the top of the firewall. The supposed red COPO that I saw in Reno still had the remains of the plate that attaches a vacumn pot. It is only used on Air conditioned cars and if you remove the plate there would be a hole in the top of the cowl. The car I saw had that plate. That tells me the car was a Air conditioned car at one time. Maybe someone with a better computer than mine can look more closely at the Ebay pics.

Thanks, Charlie. I will make that request. I am guessing that this is the same car you have seen. Also, after checking the ebay item again, it looks like he may reach his goal of 46K. With the info you guys have given, I will probably just wait and see if it sells or not before proceeding, seems prudent at this time. Thanks! /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Being an LA built car and since there has been none to date being found why coulndt one have been ordered with AC. ESP being in Calif!! But then if it were to have been and the AC is gone down with the price

robber6910

COPO's were not built with AC because they were supposed to be HIPO cars. AC would cause dramatic decrease in HP thus making it just another ordinary show car.

It sounds like whoever has got the high bid on this car, could possibly be a dealer. Looking at all the feedback history, he is the seller in most situations. Most of the comments read great car, beautiful car, etc.

I challenged guy to come on here and go up against the experts and this was his response:

Like any used car that you buy, you have to do your homework and check it out as much as you can. I would look real close at the speedo to see if it is a repop. The COPO BE rear has different internal parts then a normal 12 bolt so I would check that also. There has been one documented COPO Chevelle found that was built in Cali but don't know of any documented COPO Camaro from Cali

GM also didn't want to handle all the warranty claims from guys spinning the A/C compressors to 7,000 or 8,000 rpm. /ubbthreads/images/icons/shocked.gif

TimG

They were incompatible options, GM did not like to install AC on solid lifter cars. They did on the 365 horse 64 and 65 Corvette and again with the 72 LT1 engine. The LT1 had a reduced red line to prevent damage to the AC compressor.
A high reving big block would tear one of these compressors up.

Charley,

I like a good mystery. Until someone gets the better pic look at this one. I believe it does have the AC plenum valve plate. Greg
