ZL1 #38 (fathom green, TH400) is going up for auction in Dallas in November. Does anyone in this forum know any history on this car? At one time (or presently?) the car was owned by WW Muscle Cars... and is one of only 22 auto ZL1's. I know the going rate for a 4-spd ZL1, but on average, does an automatic go for less (assuming it's in the same pristine condition)? Does the car retain any "original" drivetrain, block, etc.? Any racing history? Does anyone in this forum own, or did they own this car at one time? (I see you certified this car back in '86 Ed... remember anything about it?)

Seems like the market is currently valuing 4 speeds about $50K MORE than an automatic. Sometimes a lower production number does not equate to a higher price.

ZL1 #38 turned up at a south side Milwaukee repair shop with a dead battery, circa 1982. A friend noticed the bb heater and called me with the VIN and tag numbers. The owner at that time was from Kentucky, attending college here.

I thought $2500 was a bit steep and passed. Someone in Illinois bought it.......

Who would that be in Illinois? /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

It is amazing to me, when you stop to think ,that of the 45 or so Found ZL1s almost half have been owned by Ed Cuneen and his Brother in Law .

I would guess that in the early 1980s ,that either Ed or Ray purchased it, but that is just an odds on guess.

/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif Yeah, probem is, we all technically had "the list" when Vince had the VINS published, but Ed is the one who decided to act on it... and he's done pretty well for himself ever since. /ubbthreads/images/icons/cool.gif

Interesting stories on #38... does anyone know more about the block, drivetrain, racing/owner history and if anything is orginal on that car? Thanks in advance.

I looked at the car in December of 2000. The car was in Hicksville Ohio and was owned by Derrick Smith who restored the car himself. Derrick owned the car for over ten years and did purchase the car from Ed Cunneen. There was some documentation with the car, including title search which showed the car was found in KY.
I have detailed inspection notes and photos on the car at home. If interested, I will dig them out.

I think being the first year (1969) to have a Turbo/Hydro 400
specially built
to accomidate solid lifter big blocks from 375 h.p. on up to the ZL-1 is a neat proposition. Everyone had 4-speeds, so it might be safe to say those TH400 cars saw some strip duty, and being rarer than most four speeds, except the M-22,
should be a documented peice, and cool, I guess because I really like our doc. Th400 69 SS L78. Sorry I like the auto cars..........................Joel

What is the Documentaion on the car? I heard on this web that it went for $123,000 before WWMC. It would have to have docs to prove a TH400 application.......Normal RPO code except in COPO application.........

ZL1 #38 is listed in the Kruse Auction in Dallas (Dallas Market Hall) on November 22-24, 2002. I can't make it since this is the same date of the Vettefest in Chicago.
As anyone going to this auction?
FYI, I previously emailed them (WWMC) a good offer on the car which was rejected, stating " we feel the car is properly priced (165k) for the current market".
I'm just curious what bids the car will bring.
Thanks,
DH

I was the one who sold the car for Derick Smith and still have all the copy's of the paperwork on the #38
I since have been involved in selling 8 other ZL1's in private sales that nobody even knows about. And in the works on 2 other ZL1's at the moment..

...am I understanding correctly?... the car was going to go up for auction in TX... then a private deal was going through instead, so the car didn't go to auction... now the deal has fallen through... but now another board member is very interested?.... I'm confused. /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif

We flew into Edmund OK on friday night, but did not buy the car. Mike and Tony from Worldwide were gentlemen, and I would reccommend them to anybody considering a musclecar.
