hi everybody, i'm new to this website so forgive me if i dont know all the rules. i am looking for someone to restore my spiral shocks for my 69 rs z28. anybody know of anybody doing this kind of restoration. thanks dave

Actually, I have a pair of spirals that need to be redone, I'm not sure that anyone does this.

You can buy repo spirals now for front and backs are coming soon from what I hear.

I think there was a discussion on the TC site about this same topic. Someone mentioned a service advertised in Hemmings. They supposedly rebuild all types of shocks but the general opinion was that they catered mostly to antiques since the ad mentioned friction shocks. You might browse through the advertisers in Hemmings just for kicks. I too have heard that both front and backs will soon be available, but without date codes.

There used to be a guy that restored them for Vettes. But Vette owners are now looking for a rebuild service, and noone does.

I called <font color="red">everyone</font color> who advertises shock rebuilds in Hemmings. If they couldn't or wouldn't do hydraulic shocks, I asked them for references. No go, no one does it. I eventually lucked out and found an NOS set on eBay.

Joe,

One of the vendors that sell the repro front shocks states they are recommended for show cars. They do not feel they are daily driver quality. Greg

IMHO, why would someone go to the trouble of installing spiral shocks on a daily driver? Seems to me that a car that you would want to put the original style shocks on would not be driven hardly at all. I can't see someone driving a rare car "daily". Is it the performance of the shocks or how they last with regular use?

69L89396, Just reporting a caution. I think these were designed for looks only and may not even be up to minimum miles.

If I was going to show the car only I would install worn out but correctly date coded shocks since I have a set.

What about the middle ground between show only and daily driver? If I was going to drive and show the car, I would consider repro spiral shocks. The repros should be new shocks right? The reseller wants to make it clear that just because they are new does not mean they will do what the originals were designed to do. /ubbthreads/images/icons/frown.gif I have not seen them and do not know what they were designed to do. If I could get the shocks I have rebuild, I would. I want a nice car that I can also drive. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif The repro would fit my need only if they work as they originals did.

Does anyone have any experience with these shocks? Thanks, Greg
