Our 1969 Chevelles were Baltimore built. What markings would have been on the tires? The trucks we build today get the last two digits of the sequence number plus a paint dot to show where the balancing weight goes on the rim. Were they like this?

Keith,
It would partially depend on the manufacturer of the tire. I know a lot of the tires will have a number that is also listed on the build sheet followed by a 1 through 5. The ones on the LS-6 had 2 yellow stripes plus a letter/number stamp. These appeared to have been sprayed on as opposed to a roller stamp and where all the way into the tread. I got some of this info from Rick Peters as well as some great photos. Hopefully he will chime in.

I have a 68 memo stating the red dot on the tire must line up with the "BB shot" on the steel rim. This was to balance the high and low spot of each, tire and rim.I believe it was from a dealer service bull. not a TSB. I'll get the date of the memo when I get home from work....

It is a Dealer Service Info Bulletin dated 12-8-67.This may not apply to all applications.Noted are the Chevrolet at the Flint plant,Camaro Norwood, and Chevy II Willow Run."This process was not effective at the start of production on all models, but is being introduced as sufficient quanties of marked wheels and tires become available."Take this for what it's worth,I don't know how long it lasted in production. My rims were marked with a 6/68 date and have the " bb shot".I have a assy line shot of a 70 Monte, check the intro of CBTN for the photo, with a two letter number shown on it as well.I also have a double pin stripe Goodrich with a "23" on a early 72 Chevelle.Looks like the number practice is a safe bet......

We've got a debate here at work that the codes on the tires were actually in the mold and transfered to the tire in the manufacturing process. That is why the numbers go into the tread and don't really look sprayed on. What do you think, Rick ??
