TEAM CHEVELLE GET TOGETHER WHERE I HAD MY CHEVELLE,AFTER ABOUT A WEEK I STARTED HEARING THAT MY CAR MIGHT BE A FAKO,PROBABLY NOT REAL,THIS BOTHERED ME A LITTLE SO I THOUGHT I WOULD POST SOME PICS,THIS CAR IS AN 18,512 ORIGINAL MILE CAR,ALL ORIGINAL DRIVETRAIN,ORIGINAL INTERIOR,EVERY NUT AND BOLT IS ORIGINAL,I ALSO HAVE A TON OF PAPERWORK INCLUDING ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS FROM YENKO CHEV. Chad, Welcome to the site. Sounds like a great Yenko Chevelle. Is it original paint also?

yes, this car is original paint, although it is not something you would bring to a show, it is still unreal for a yenko chevelle. i tried to post other pics of motor and body but for some reason those pics came off my camera too large so i will try again later,i just hate when someone posts pics with no motor shots. /ubbthreads/images/icons/mad.gif

Chad,
Rick mentioned this car to me a few weeks ago. If he felt that the car is real, I'd ask no further. However, if you needed any more assurance.....check out the offers above. You came to the right site and I think you got your answer. IMO, hang on to it! I know I would. Looking forward to seeing her in person soon. Congrats!!!

Chad,
I believe we spoke a couple of months ago. You had called me about a '69 Chevelle bench seat I had for sale on Chevelles.com. I still have the seat and it is yours if you can use it (I'm tired of tripping over it already)! Please e-mail me at

tell you what! those chevelles sure are getting a lot of attention. the new gentleman hasn,t even mentioned the word for sale and he has a list of waiters. by the way how much? please let me beat dave belk to this one! ha ha! i think they are as srong or stronger than camaros at this point look at the comparison of the for sale numbers, 37 known to exist, 70 - 100 camaros.
I had one since 1986 and don't ever remember as much interest in the Yenko Chevelle as you see today. Years ago you could have purchased one for about half as much as a 69 Yenko Camaro.
Any one know if Rick Nelson has a Yenko Chevelle?
I hope Chad doesn't get the wrong impression of Chevelle owners. He goes to a show and people tell him the car is fake and he comes here and people want to buy it even though he never said it was for sale. The same thing happened to another Yenko Chevelle owner I know - now the guy won't even open his garage door. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

There is always "experts" at car shows /ubbthreads/images/icons/smirk.gif and they don't mind telling you what's wrong with your car. I witnessed to guys almost fighting over a comment made about a 1987 GN!
Rick Nelson doesn't own a Yenko Chevelle....I'm sure he wouldn't mind owning one though..

I just wanted to clear up an error i had made on an earlier post,it was no one at the mn get together(team chevelle) that had said my car was a fake, some people had seen pictures of it from there and had starting spreading rumors that it might not be real, and as for the car being for sale,it is not,i am collecting cars and hope to have some very rare ones in the future.I started to wonder when i purchased the yenko what was the popularity next to the camaro?it seems very hard to find a chevelle compared to a camaro, especially one that is untouched. I had planned to do a frame off next year but when i look at this car it is such a rare example of an untouched piece of history, the only things incorrect are some gauges the original owner had put under the dash, does not have the original battery the original tires "(of course) and a hurst shifter, which if he would not have changed that, we all know that it would not have the original motor. This car drives so nice and so tight, it is truly amazing! /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif
Chad, does it have the original exhaust system? There are questions on if the original exhaust used the tail pipe resonator or if it used a tail pipe with no resonator.
Also does it have the original exhaust tips? Some people say they used an exhaust tip with a rolled edge and some say the exhaust tip edge is just a cut edge with no roll or form to it.

We bought our COPO Chevelle new and I can only speak for it. This car was very near the end of the production run. It had the standard reverse flow mufflers and no resonators. It is my understanding that these resonator pipes were only used with the NC8 chambered exhaust. Just try chambered mufflers without resonators and you will know why they were used. Our exhaust tips were not rolled, but the usual angle cut. As a matter of fact we still have the old tips. It would be nice to find out when the rolled tip exhaust extensions were used. Was there any particular plant or time frame where the rolled tips were used? Other than pictures, I have never seen them.
Keith, I agree with you on the exhaust and tips. I believe the rolled tip was only used for a very short time. I am just curious what Chad has on his Chevelle if it has original exhaust. It would be great to go over the car documenting all paint and chalk marks, code tags, etc.
before any restoration work is done. Not many unrestored COPO Chevelles left out there.
Chad what is the build date on trim tag?
Chad,
Sounds like a great car. To Joe's point, It would be a great source of reference for originality and something to document for other restorers. The car is only original once....don't restore it if you don't have to. Just my .02 cents. Good luck with it and enjoy.
By the way, who is Rick Nelson and what services does he offer?

If i remember correctly the car has the rolled tips, they are still on the car but the original owner had put a glass pac on one side and the hanger was broke so i took that of and put on a aftermarket exhaust with the stock tips,i do not remember if it had a resonator or not,i will have to check the old system, was not in good shape that is why i took it off

Rick is SS427 (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showprofile.php?Cat=&User=SS427&what=search&Forum= All_Forums&Words=ss427&Match=Username&Searchpage=0 &Limit=25&Old=1month) on this board, and he happens to restore musclecars, with the current one being a '69 FG Y-Camaro (correct me if that's wrong, Rick). But, there was also a Rick Nelson (http://www.ricknelson.com/) with a prestigous record career back in the '50s & '60s. You don't suppose, do ya...? /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif

Joe, only the chambered exhaust got the resonators in 69. Without them the system was very loud! I have owned and worked on numerous unrestored 69 Chevelles and the majority have the "angle cut" tips and not the rolled tips as seen on a couple of restored cars. The rolled tips have been found only on a few original cars and I am thinking only out of one plant. I have been researching this for a long time and I am curious to see the tips on Chads car also................RatPack....................... .......

Which plant used them Ratpack ?
From what I read on the rolled edge exhaust tips, they were used in early production and got a lot of complaints because the water from condensation would collect in the rolled tip. The water would then sit on the base of the exhaust tip and rust. One original owner said he had his replaced under warrantee and got the cut off ones as replacements.
I owned a couple of low mileage L78 ('69) Chevelles a few years ago and they both had the "cut" tips...both of these cars were Baltimore built cars..

Belair62, Baltimore, very early, before COPO production ever started. That is why I am curious to see what Chads car has. I have owned three unrestored 69 SS Chevelles from the Baltimore plant and all of them had the slant cut tips and production ranged from 09?-07?. I am thinking that there were possibly only a handful of the rolled tips ever produced. I don't have my notes handy about the exact production date but I am almost positive that the two or three cars found with them originally were all late August 68 build cars. There was a BY Yenko Chevelle that was restored that had the rolled tips and I don't know if it actually had them on there originally. I think the owner had one tip and used it as a copy to make the set for the car. I have only seen one original set personally and a restorer friend of mine has seen another car built the same week in Baltimore. Wish there were more original cars out there to compare..............RatPack......................
That B. Y. Yenko Chevelle appeared in a magazine with the rolled tips and they said they were original. I believe it is an early Yenko with 03A build but I am not sure if rolled tips were really on it new. I was told the owner of the car or the guy who restored it was or is the one selling the repro rolled tips.

Joe, I had seen that car at a show and I guess it was the owner that was telling me that he only had one tip as the other one was gone when he bought the car. I would assume that they were on the car new but the picture BKH has showing the Yenkos with the slant cut tips would lead me to believe otherwise. One thing that could be possible is that a secondary source was used and they made the slant cut tips and were more readily available.? /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif One thing is for sure, with the rolled tips you do not have to worry about cut knuckles while polishing the bumper!...............RatPack..................... ......

I had a '68 Chevelle and bought a set of the exhaust tips after the '69's came out. Had to modify the tailpipes to make them work but the ones I received from GM had the rolled edge. Evidently the rolled edge pieces were early service items. They barely lasted a year before rusting through at the bottom. The next set I got were the straight cut. My guess is GM cured the rust problem by switching to the "new" design.
Can't testify to the use of resonator pipes being exclusive to the chambered systems in '69 but my '70 came with resonator pipes and straight cut tips, as did all '70 SS Chevelles (excluding ElCaminos).
P.S. When I first met Rick Nelson, I said the same thing "I thought you died in a plane crash." His response was "I did, but I got better." Super guy! Very knowledgeable and talented.
Can any of you guys who have seen the Original rolled Ex.tips, tesify to the fact that the Part number was indeed stamped into them?
If so,was it on the top or bottom of the Ex.tip?
micky69396

I put a original pair on the black COPO we restored. There were no numbers stamped in this pair anywhere.

Rick,
I don't believe they put numbers on them until the 1972-73 version. After that, I have seen them on top, bottom and sides. Not possitive about that however. May make a good question on TC.

My brothers 70 LS-6 has both the orig. tips and do not have the part #'s on them. That is how they came from the factory, only later did they put the part #'s on them, and i have only seen them on the bottom. "MOF"
I have NOS cut off tips and they have no numbers
Thanks guys.Thats what I thought.
I know about the 70 tips not having a number from the line, but I found a set of NOS rolled tips, with the number stamped into the bottoms.
Unusual I thought. Then the seller just emailed me today to say that he believes these were homemade.
I know of a man who does this here,so that confirmed it for me.He used a current GM set to do this on.
Thanks to all.

The hood has the original stripes that were applied by Yenko. There has been discussions on here before that I could not find regarding stripe placement. Remember, these were just hired kids. I believe there have been others that were installed this way as well.
