What are the odds this is a real one? Were they available in '67? The ad doesn't SAY it's original, but its got that all important "rare" word in there.

That car has been on there before. Going from memory, I think "Chevrolet by the Numbers" says something like 12 engines built but no record of installation.

Hey Rick, help me out here!

I still have never come across a documented '67 425 hp which is a shame as it would make for a VERY neat car. I refuse to believe some dealers didn't install these as well and go racing.

P.S. can someone inform me how to post a link but shorten the address and make it look like "previous discussion" innstead of that long link. /ubbthreads/images/icons/blush.gif

From what I read, Chevy got nervous about handing out the HP in 1967. One late 1966 magazine article said that the 375 HP 396 was not available in the 67 Chevelle and the BB was not available in the 67 Camaro. Chevy changed their mind and made the 375 HP Camaro and Chevelle but info was not on some of the 1967 dealer listings. There may have been some 425 Passenger cars that escaped from the factory but it would be a small number.

This particular one looks to have a ten bolt rear, according to the picture on eBay (see attachment).
I don't know much about big cars, but that's not very likely is it?

Anyone remember the red/red 66 four door Biscayne that ran in the Supercar Showdown years ago?I think it was claimed to be a orig 427 4 speed. It was out of Lancaster Ohio.I used to have it on video.....real deal?

Steve

Red 4 door biscayne was the real deal. I saw an article on this car in the 80s it had full docs including p.o.p. Also seen it run at Quaker City drag strip in Salem,Ohio. The rumor was 5 67 Impalas were sold with the hipo engine but I have never seen one nor have any been documented. If it were real it would have a 12 bolt rearend and big sway bar on the front.

I know you are talking about 1967,but I once owned a 1966 Impala with a factory 427/425.Only 1856 made.We found paper on it and brought it home. That car beat an LS-6 balls out!
But the next year they only offered the L36 427/385Hp in this carline.

Stefano

There was also a 1966 427/425 Biscayne in the Roselle area for a while. It was black with a blue interior and 4 speed.
It was also the real deal.

425/425's were offered from 1966-1969 in all of the big car line but the '67 is the only year that is very questionable.

And Rick, thanks for pointing out that these big cars had potential. I am very pleased with the power of my cars but am seldom invited anywhere. /ubbthreads/images/icons/blush.gif

The big cars are definately underrated. If I get my car to hook up it runs pretty well. At the local track it has gone 13.65 @ 102 is my best pass ever in it. Its just tuff with a stick car. The red 66 is a pretty neat car, I havent see it in a long time. I also remember a 66 427 wagon with a 4 gear out there too, along with a 409 64 wagon. Micky

Rick,

I agree about the potential of the big cars with the 425's. They were huge in size but didn't weigh all that much more than the Chevelle. Plus the 427's wrapped quicker than the long stroke '54's. There's a Red '65 427 here in town and a Marina Blue '66 425 HP a few miles East of here and they're still with their original owners. The '66 was a regular at the local strip through the early '70's and made believers out of a lot of us.

Rick N.
Maybe you don't get the invitations for fear of being humiliated by those heavy breathing behemoths! They're welcome down here ANYTIME.

I know we've covered this before, but the topic (http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8885&pagenumber=1) of the "generous" exhaust manifolds of the '65 and '66 BIG cars came up recently on the Pure Stock board, and it got me to checking. What I found (and Rick had probably already told me this!) was that the '65 L-78 big cars shared exhaust manifolds with the '65 Corvettes, whereas the '66 L-72 big cars shared exhaust manifolds with the '66-69 Corvettes!

Here (http://ebay2.ipixmedia.com/abc/M28/_EBAY_a7ea744b089c6549ece428937010a0a8/i-3_B_L.JPG) is a picture of a set of '66 L-72 big car &'66-'69 Corvette manifolds. And, here (http://www.v8buick.com/attachment.php?s=&postid=56009) is a picture of what the standard fare 385hp manifolds off a '68 big car. What a DIFFERENCE!

As for the L-72, I gotta tell ya, it may be sour grapes since I sold my LS-6 to pick up a Yenko Chevelle, but I like the 427 better for racing. To me, it seems like the perfect blend: the bore of the 454, with the stroke of the 396.

Our parts man at work used to work at Economy chevrolet in Rock Island Il. A couple of the guys he ran with bought 1966 427 powered big cars. Rosco Davidson had a fully loaded silver Impala with a 4 speed that he ran at Cordova drag strip. "Fat Jack" Reynolds had an aztek bronze Biscayne, rubber floor mat, radio delete, 4 speed with 4.88 gears. Madsen says he took it home and pulled the motor and had it balanced and blue printed. While he was waiting on that installed fiberglass fenders, hood, deck lid and bumpers. Says he never ran it at the strip just on the 1ways in Rock Island. Madsen has a Rock Island Argus paper with an article on the street racing in Rock Island

Along the same line of thought...what exhaust manifolds did the '68 & '69 L-72 big cars get? The same as the Corvettes, or the same crappy ones as the 385hp?

I think Casey would like this one.

A collector in Austin by has a 66 L72 with transistor ignition and four speed. It looks like a Corvette motor got lost on the assembly line and ended up in this car.
It most certainly the original engine.

Cool car Mickey! Is that what it looks like today with the lettering still on it or is that an old pic. It has the "COPO" look with 425hp and not even any SS emblems. I like them to.

Steve thanks, I think I know who your talking about. All I have found from him were B&W shots, thats the first color lettered up photo I have seen. Joe, its been restored a long time ago, needs a little work now but really, its not up to par with the stuff I am doing now. I dont intend to do it that way either, I want to drive it some and have fun with it. It still has "battle scars" that I will never fix. The rear floor area is beat up bad along with the headliner having a couple holes from a blown driveshaft. The rear end cover has many dimples from blown gears, and the rear crossmember had too be welded from too many hard launches. I have every piece of paperwork except a build sheet for it. I will try to find a current photo, but it looks like the old car yet just with no lettering, even the rally wheels are on it yet.

Thank you, L78Impala, for the kind words about my 67 Bel Air.I have been silently enjoying this site for quite a while. Excellent information and always something new to learn. When I saw you post the picture of my car I figured it was time to join the party. I watched the number of page views on the Casey Marks Biscayne story go past 2700 and wondered if this was turning into the Super SIZE Car registry!

Best regards,

'68 Biscayne-14.902 @ 99.27
Mike and son Micky Hale split the
driving duties. Mike, who hadn't been
to a dragstrip in 20 years, started off
with a 15.575 @ 96.95. Tire spinning
was the big problem, but the Hales
also changed plugs and adjusted the
valves. As the temperature went up,
so did the times. The best Mickey
could muster in the 98 heat was
16.608 @ 94.98. After Mike clicked off
a 15.269 @ 98.68 the next morning,
Mickey recorded runs of 15.053 @
99.27 and 14.902 @ 99.44.

Those were the first passes I ever made down a dragstrip and it showed. After that event we pulled down the engine and kinda rebuilt it more to racing "stock" specs. It went a 13.65 back at Thompson about 4 years ago. I broke the trans on the next pass. The car hasnt been out since, I put south side bars and headers back in, drove it around a while and it started making noise, tore the engie back down and found a bad rod bearing and its still on the stand. In the meantime decided I wasnt really wanting to race it anymore but just have fun crusing. We built a real racecar that we run in a Blown Alky group. Has run a best of 7.65 @ 181.

I waited four years for the owner/restorer of this car to part with it and have owned it for a year and a half. These cars are interesting in that they separate the true enthusiasts from those that like anything with shiny paint. One of my neighbors wanted to know if it was my grandfather's car /ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gifOthers have called it the" big white taxicab".The only thing that betrays the sleeper image are those 427 fender badges. Walk softly and carry a big stick. /ubbthreads/images/icons/cool.gif And never lift the hood before you race. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif http://www.impalass427.com/72res/67_Bel427.jpg
