Was there a method to GM's madness when building convertible cars? I am inquiring because there is a Z11 for sale on ebay. The body sequence number is 201475 whereas the VIN is 617205. The build date is 03B. The average range for all the cars built around this one is sequence 281000-292078. What gives????

There are people on this board who are VERY knowledgeable on how's/why's/when's of sequence numbers, and if there is an explanation they will know what it is. But my impression is that it's been a hot market for pacers this past year, and I have seen a number of fakes locally. Some good, just with just a small mistake here or there to give it away, and some not so good. One guy out at Pomona, not so savvy on trim tags, had an "X11" on his. Another wound up at the Federal "Drug Dealers" auction with the worst faked trim tag I had ever seen on one of the worst cloning jobs I have seen. Imagine, even the Feds getting in on the action, selling a clone for big bucks as real. And it was way more phoney than clone. Now that the market has cooled off a little, people are paying more attention to what they are spending big money on, doimg more research, I think, at least around here. The fake pacers and Z's are no longer moving for stupid amounts of money by people desperate for an investment with the stock market tanked.
I just don't think I would consider buying a pacer off eBay without having a real good look at it...

Here is some information that may assist you. By the VIN# and date you supplied the following can be determined: The convert that you are looking at is a Norwood car. The build date of 03-B is consistant with 2nd week March 1969.
Production at Norwood for March /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif generally falls within a range of 607 to 623. So The car looks legit for the 2nd week. Caution: Better to have a look yourself - prior to spending the money.
On the Body build Number issue- 03-E cars were already at 306853, so something looks strange on the range info you provided for 03-B ending at 29...
Good luck.

Look at the pic again. The body number is 281475; the 8 is difficult to see.

William, I emailed the guy myself questioning the "8" being a "0". He e-mailed me back and said that it was indeed a
"0". Either the guy has poor eyesight, or we're all losing our minds.

The guy must have bad eyesight cause that number is 281475. I've got the numer off of another 03B pace car that is about 1200 VINs and 450 body numbers prior to this one. A body number of 201475 is somewhere around December of 68.
