Just curious.....I would think that it would be a bit scary considering the monetary investment /ubbthreads/images/icons/shocked.gif

Nice car. I haven't had a chance to drive mine because it's still being restored. I will be nervous driving it with the money I have put into it. But that's why we have insurance I guess.

Alwyn, I have a vintage Team Shelby Trans Am Mustang worth close to half mil, look for me next season (car #2) on the vintage race circuit racing with no insurance as race vehicles cant be insured. All the guys in that sport take the same risk, so yeah a lot of guys not only drive there cars, but drive with their foot to the floor! /ubbthreads/images/icons/laugh.gif

Alwyn, Nice Firebird, if you know some one looking for a similar project I have a basket case, badly rusted, complete numbers matching 67 Firebird 350 HO convertible I may let go, its a rare one, did not make many 350 HO ragtops, so it is worth saving.

my 7200 mile 69 camaro yenko , compliments, brian henderson, once, 69 yenko chevelle compliments chuck huber, never, 69 yenko nova compliments randy miller, never. the camaro is original , so it doesn't hurt it as much , 2miles, the other (2) never except to dyno and warm on a rare occasion. i am the collector car freak, don't stand a chace to spoil what you have, a virgin!
i do have a 67 ss/rs 396 mint driver i sold and bought back!

I drive the LS6 as often as possible. It is fun to let the car eat the tires, although a pain to clean rubber from the wheelwells. As far as I'm concerned if you can't drive it, it isn't worth owning. I don't want an oversize paper weight in my garage. To each his own though.

You bet I drive my Yenko /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif
After all, these things are still cars, not 'art'. What else are they good for if you don't take them out once in a while and exercise them?

Kevin Hand! You should be ashamed of yourself! The Chevelle and the Nova have been restored, and can be restored again if need be - so drive the wheels off of them! Yea I know you paid a lot of money for them, but it's all relative, so why cut yourself short of experiencing all there is to owning such cars? How many people can answer 'YES' when someone asks you 'is it real?' after you've just chirped through all 4 gears?

/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Kevin, sell me the chevelle. I'll drive it. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Best part about driving them is the stories you here about 'back in the day.'
This Chevelle was a local car and almost every time I drive it people come up to me with old stories about it. This pic is the original owner sitting in the car. He lives in the next town over. I was at a cruz nite there and he came up to me saying "hey that's my car." It was fun to have him there to answer the "is it real" questions.

Fortunately, our weather has been great this fall. We have taken the L79 out 2 or 3 times a week and blast through town. The Deuce also gets driven regularly. One of the shows last summer was a 200 mile round trip. Made a pass throught town in the Camaro last week. However due to the low miles and originality , I am hesitant to drive it much. Have driven it 2000 miles in the last 5 years. Jim

Now it's not a high dollar car but I drive mine. It's too much fun to just let it sit in the garage. Guess that is why I didn't opt for a frame off resto. If I could eventually afford to get a couple more cars I would like to do a frame off.

I guess asking Kevin for a ride in the Yenko Nova is out. /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

My pacecar (not a supercar) but a great car, is a piece of American history. I will drive it only enough to keep it "juiced". I have 3 other Camaros that more than impress 99% of the population that are "expendable"...If one gets smashed or stolen so be it. bottom line is that we are mearly keepers of these cars and will be dead long before they rust to nothingness

Spent years restoring BB Corvettes, gave up when car shows were painful explaining why my car was correct (everyone in OZ is a Corvette expert). Started racing a A Prod Vette after visiting the NCRS at Anaheim, great time with maybe the most real race Vettes ever located, and moved on to a OZ BB drag car, that was always street registered. Best of both worlds. Don't have to put up with the idiots anymore, telling me my cars wrong, only people in the know have a clue what it is, If you don't drive them I think you get tired of them quicker.

I would not own a car I didnt drive. I went a little over board driving them home from Vettefest. I felt pretty bad for the first couple of miles. Once the snow and salt was all over the cars and I knew there was nothing I could do about it,I felt like I was 16 again. It felt kinda cool. Then I spent two days cleaning the cars.

Here's a few of the drivers perspective when I made the ultimate road trip. I moved from central PA to Tulsa, Ok in Feb/2000 and I drove 1200 miles in 14hrs straight through in my built '70 4spd Camaro. Oh, Did I mention how much I regret selling it 3 months after that??!! Here I am entering Ohio.

Yeah that is a good Point...Although I am sure there is a lot of money to be made by collecting them

12-06-2002, 02:01 PM
Just because the cars are driven some really doesn't harm their value. As has been said many times before, they can be restored many, many times. If I wanted to collect something with little actual enjoyment from its' use...I'd collect stamps or coins.

I drive the 68 everytime I get A chance, and usually let her breathe A little too!!!! Besides, I wa always told to rotate the engine frequently when you have A solid lift setup.... So I do! It's fun to drive and you really turn some heads with these cars. It only gets frustrating when you can't get away from people who want to talk all day or run up on your bumper to see what you are driving. I don't have the brakes cars have today and in town I drive slower because of that.

Well, my car isn't a "SUPER CAR" but it is a Super Car /ubbthreads/images/icons/cool.gif and NO, that would be my response to the question at hand. But....and here comes the speech.... I always get a kick out of those who say, "what fun is it to not drive it" or similar statements. I say, Who are you to decide what is FUN for me or anyone else who CHOOSES not to drive their collector car. Ask anyone who knows me or anyone who has been at a CAR SHOW with me...ask them if Mike has FUN with his car /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif YOU BET I DO!! It may be a different kind of fun than you have, but it is Fun for me... I enjoy Showing my car...showing it to everyone and anyone, talking with people at the show from the minute I arrive to the minute I leave. Then there is the on-line Bulletin Boards, like this, E-mails and the tech questions that I answer about 66 and 67 Chevelle SS's, and all the many friends I have b/c of my car...all of this brings me FUN...different than the FUN you have, but it is FUN for me. Don't get me wrong, I know the FUN you speak of...Driving these cars., I had my share....and it is a lot of FUN! But for now, I choose Showing the car and enjoying the conversation that I get because of it.

Sorry for the soap box Fellas....atleast nobody used that Deadly Word...."Trailer Que___n" Oooh I hate that one /ubbthreads/images/icons/shocked.gif

I was at Limerock for the historic racing a couple of years ago. There was this guy there who had a '34 Monza that was one of the cars from the Scuddaria Ferrari race shop. (this is what Enzo did before he stared building them on his own) The car had been stored in a mine in Norway during WWII to keep it safe. The car was I believe unrestored and in beautiful shape. This guy had found the car over seas and now was racing it.

He was consistantly leading his class the whole weekend. He was really pushing this 70 year old car. When I asked him if he was worried about possibly injuring the car while racing he replied 'racing is what this car was build for'.

I was quite impressed with his answer beacause his car is worth between 3 and 4 million dollars. /ubbthreads/images/icons/shocked.gif
