I pulled this fuel pump off my motor of my 1970 Nova SS 396/350 hp car during my restoration. I am trying to find out if this was the original fuel pump. I don't have any books to decode a fuel pump. If it is, does anybody know of a company that can restore it? This is the number on it: 159M4072 It has just the plain AC lettering on it.

Ron,

The 62-70 Parts book lists the pump as:

<font color="red"> 70 Nova, Camaro (396), 70 Chevelle w/Sp. H/Per. (396, 454) 6470424 (type 40727) </font color>

Type is the AC number. So 159M4072 might be the date code and the first 4 digits of the type. I do not have anything on fuel pump date codes handy. This number was new for 1970.

Here is one found on ebay that looks to be a remanufactured or aftermarket.

Ron,
If I recall correctly, 159 is the date code. Many people in the know have not determined the "M" and these letters vary all over the place from what I have seen. The rest of the number is correct but it is likely you cannot make out the last digit which should be a "7". It should read 159M40727 which is the correct stamping on a "727" pump. Double check the size of the AC stampings on the side.

Greg &amp; Rick,
Now I know why I posted this question on this web site. You guys are really sharp. I looked at the fuel pump again and behold there is a 7 at the end. You can just barely see it. The number is:159M40727. I think I figured out the code and the M. My transmission had the "M" code in it which was August. The 159 is probably the 15th day of August 1969. Makes sense. My engine was stamped T0820CTX which is August 20th. So the code probably is August 15, 1969. The AC lettering is about 1/2 inch long and about 1/4 inch high. What do you think? Original?? Any ideas who could restore it??

Good luck! I tried in vain to find someone who could replate the tank while it was mounted on the pump. I can restore the aluminum to as new but have only been able to fake the cadmium plating on the tank so far.

Boy would I like to find one of those fuel pumps! I have been looking for several years, no luck finding one with the AC on the side.

Marlin,
Do you want me to e-mail you a picture of it? Or better yet, want the video. I can get me friend to take a picture of it for me and then I can forward it to you or someone else who could post it here. I don't know how.

Marlin, (if you want) I will keep my eyes open for you. I have bought a couple of NOS 40727 pumps in the last year, I doubt I paid more than $25 apiece and they were still in the original AC box. I need the 40768 worse than I need the 727s. Keep in mind, there are variances in these pumps even with the same number. As an example, the early 768 had two square outlets and one round tube, the later version had 1 square and two round. Only an issue for people with the name "Anal Rick". /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

Rick,
If you have one for sale, I'll buy it as long as it has the AC cast into it. Even if some small areas are incorrect, it's still better than the one I have on the car now - it's looks pretty, but it's wrong!

The judges missed it at this years Nova Nationals, but barely. They had already placed the engine judging sheet in the envelope when they noticed it, Lanny Weatherford informed me about it, I obviously knew it was wrong, we laughed, but I know they will look for it next year, so I want to get it changed.

BTW, You have a PM regarding the TCS switch on the wire gutter!

Marlin,
I currently do not have any extras as they were used on cars I was restoring. If I come across any, I will keep you in mind. I wonder what they were worth before I told you I usually pay around $25! /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

I also answer your PM question.

Don't worry, I know the going rate for those of us who are anal about their cars!

Marlin,

What are you looking for on the TCS switch on the wire gutter? I just started looking for rivets to redo mine. Greg

That was my exact question to Rick, where to get the correct rivets! I finally found an NOS TCS switch on EBAY a couple of months ago, after looking for one for several years. Now, I have to get it onto that plastic wire gutter, Rick can supply the rivet answer /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif
