View Full Version : 2002 ZL 1, HOW MUCH HP!
Hi, just curious regarding this,
If i understand everything right the 2002 ZL1 comes when transformed with 400 HP,!!???
But is there anybody not tuning this cars to more HP, before taking delivery??
What is done to acheive the 600 HP∆s, is it head work, new cam, etc etc?+, is there several stages on this engine package so that you like go from 400 to 450, and so on???
Thanks

O2 ZL1 have 3 phases
1 is a LS6 motor like the one in the 405 ZO6's 400/410
2 modified LS6 motor 475/something like 450
3 no longer a LS6 motor but a /ubbthreads/images/icons/ooo.gif 427 600/575
will find some info on the ZL1's at GMMGINC.com
Would that mean that they stroke the engine to 427 cid, first at phase 3?
So is almost everybody buying a 02 ZL1 buying the phase 3 package, or is it a nice spread between the 3 packages?

It is about 1/3 Phase 1
1/3 Phase 2
1/3 Phase 3
It is funny but that is just the way the #'s fell. There was not a real plan, it was just the way it turned out.
NEW - I believe all the 427s from GMMG will have C5R blocks. As far as the stages go the numbers may be misleading. For example, I chose to take delivery of mine as a stage I but am in the process of having a C5R 427 built with the new 090 casting C5R heads. I am also going with some other after market parts such as a new clutch and rear end.

What type of Rear End will you be installing?
Stefano - Lamar likes the Strange rear end, McLeod dual disk and Hotchkis parts.

A little Bird told me that the C5R 427s for the Camaro Super Car ZL1s have actually Dynoed at 625 flywheel hp and are getting over 500hp to the rear wheels. I would think that a stronger rear end would be a necessity?
I agree. I would think that the rear end or clutch would be eary casualties. Lamar or his son are going to take mine down the track for some magazine articles and ESPN II. For the shoot they are going to install some drag radials. I don't want to waste a day watching parts fly all over the place. /ubbthreads/images/icons/blush.gif

500 plus HP at the rear wheels, a strong clutch and steep rear gears with some very stickey tires, should be able to get some good air under both front tires. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Like GRB the numbers are misleading because I started my order with the phase 2 package which was installed, then turned around and had the phase 3 package installed.
500 rhp that would be nice /ubbthreads/images/icons/ooo.gif If you are seeing some serious racing then the rear and clutch upgrades would be mandatory. But hopefully with being a street car, occassionaly racer the stock stuff will do.
I would also think if you are upgrading the rear clutch and suspension then you better go with the roll cage.
Don't think to many tracks are going to let us see track time with out a cage. Could be wrong though.

82z96ss- So what happened to the phase II parts you had? Did Matt take them back towards the Phase III? Complete motor swap between phase II and III right?

GRB- I thought GMMG did the upgrades, where/how does Lamar fit in to the picture on the '02 ZL1? Just curious.
Thanks
This machines will fly, what is the weight on the car after phase III installed?,
Has anyone done any serious testing on the 1/4 with the ZL1 in either of the phase I, II, and III options. I mean like with track bite, serious slicks etc...?
To GRB
What gears do you plan to use when changing the rear axle,?
What diffrential system will you use, youre not thinking spool are you?
Many questions but i just am very curious abt. these cars.

CWilliams - Lamar Walden worked on my 55 chev. and 70 LT1 vette in the late 60s and early 70s. I lost touch with Lamar and it wasn't until 6 moths agp that I reestabished contact with Lamar. I was going to get a different numbered car but after talking to Lamar and learning that GM gave him the first free ZL1 (#51) that we decided that having him build the engine for this #51 would be unique and fun. (BTW - my car was originally headed to Katech or LPE before Matt ever made the 427 an option.) We are trying to remain faithful to the original ZL1 concept otherwise we would be building a 630ci or going with power adders. The 427 C5R with the new 090 heads and Lamar's expertise should provide plenty of power.
There is little chance that I would ever tear up the oe rear end (I just don't abuse my cars). Lamar felt that no matter what the driving stye the clutch just wouldn't hold 550+HP. That leaves the rear end vulerable and with the going down the track we decided to go ahead and upgrade that too.
It is my understanding that Lamar and the others will rent the track and therefore not have to install a cage. I really don't want a cage in a street car.
My car won't be ready until late Jan., and by then the motor should be built. I would imagine that the install and tuning then considering magazine deadlines these article won't run until some time in the summer 03.
NEW - I'm not sure Lamar has made a decision on the gear ratio but probably 4:11. I'll leave that up to him.

GMMG gives the option of Stock gearing 3.42 all the way to 4.56s I opted to get 4.56s as the the car should be about 2700 to 3000 rpms at 70 mph in overdrive.
I was also wondering the height of the 18 inch rims with the Super Car tires compared to stock?
Stefano - I could tell you but someone has borrowed my 02 Yokohama fitment guide. I can tell you though there is very little difference in the OD of a 295/35x18 and a 275/40x17. Also, there will also be a slight variance depending on mfg. of the tire. Wheel width will also effect overall height. So the 295 mounted on a 10 or 10.5" rim will be, by comparison, a little shorter than a 275 mounted on a 9.5" rim.
I've got a set of 285/40ZR17 Michelin MXX3s mounted on 9.5x17" FM 5s. I can measure them if that would help.

GRB- Thanks for the great info!! I was wondering if you were doing a cage, I agree with no cage on a street car, plus you'll save weight too. So you were taking your ZL1 to Katech or LPE, thats interesting, I've always wondered if anyone would take a GMMG car elsewhere to be modified further. Seems to be alot of good tuners out there.
CW
Berger#56 phaseII
C - There are good tuners out there but I only know of three that are trusted and, in my opinion, only Katech or LPE have a chance of adding value to a car. I figured if I was crazy enough to put $75K in a maro I might as well go all the way and build a hot rod right, regardless of costs. Lamar probably turns down more work than he does so I didn't really know if he would be interested or if he would remember me after 30 years. He was and he did.
And yeah, it's cross my mind that I could have an AMG SL55, 911 Turbo or Dinan M5. But to those who understand no explaination is necessary and to those that don't no expaination will suffice. (plagiarized)sp? So when people ask me what it is I'll just say, "it's just a little Camaro". /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Charley I know the feeling. My daily driver is an S55 AMG that only has 360hp. I've been in touch with AMG in Germany to get the kompressor put on my car, but they won't do it. I may have to trade in, but it just seems too expensive on new cars.

GRB- I read you loud and clear my GA Brother! Something about these "little camaros" flows straight through my blood. Unless I get a little more radical with Berger #56 and start the quest for more cubic inches, my next car will be something similar to Charley's mule, I love that car and I want to build a hot rod. Hey Goodmark called my Brother here in NE. GA last Friday and wanted to speak with him about building either a 65-66 Nova or a 68-69 Camaro from the ground up, either one will be the same concept as the (black/flames) Chevelle that Metal Finish in Cleveland, GA. did most recently. Should be good experience for when I want to do mine!

you were right about the phase 2 moving to the phase 3 but since I waited too late (Billy had already had the phase 2 motor in the car and I got to see it started), it would still cost me an extra 1500 plus the stage 3 cost. I (well with wife's permission)decided with the cost difference and someone else possible getting my LS6 #46 ZL1 stamped motor that I would get it and install it into my project 82 Z28.

Charley,
What was the word you used to describe how fast your ZL1 clone was ? When we were talking yesterday ?? I need to write that one down.
Thanks,
Dennis
C - I was never a fan of the FM5 until I saw a set on a blue Berger SS at Matts a few months ago. I couldn't take my eyes off the car. Considering that I just parted with $3,500 to get them and the fact that I had to pull a few strings to get the MXX3s, and not to mention they are all mounted up and Hunter 9700 balanced...I don't think so.
But, since mine is coming with 18" Fikse Profil 5S's all the above is subject to change...in about a year or so. /ubbthreads/images/icons/laugh.gif

When I was at Matts a couple of weeks ago there was a 02 Berger SS getting the Phase 2 package. Since all the wheels were off of it and mine was on the ground next to it I but the Fiske wheels next to mine, and they look AWESOME. The 17's are awesome on the ZL1 but the 18's are going to rock /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif .
Hey Dennis have they gotten to Matt's yet? SOunds like the seats and wheels are the only things holding me up from taking delivery of my #46 /ubbthreads/images/icons/frown.gif
