L78 lower end

Tearing down my L78, and wondering if a stock '70 L78 engine should have a windage tray attached to the main caps etc, mine didn't. Also, did the factory number (stamp) the rods and caps during assembly (has the original dot rods), or does this indicate a rebuild or teardown.??? Thanks as always folks.

We've never torn down an original L-78, but we have done a couple original L-72s, which are nearly identical. No windage tray but our rods were numbered.

Anyone else agree/disagree?

I have seen the Rods/caps numbered by the factory on both L72 and L78s.

The original CE L72 which I recently sold had a Windage tray and factory studs with a special oil pan. Very similar to a Z28 set up but for a big block.

Our L72 car didn't come with a windage tray but we added one many years ago. I'm not aware of L78 cars coming from the factory with the trays either. Well worth adding if you have the engine out of the car. Our spare L78 block doesn't have the special windage tray bolts either.

My 1970 L-78 engined Chevelle did not come from the Factory with a windage tray.I don't believe any did,not even Al.head L-89 optioned engines.

I think the L88 and ZL1 Corvettes came with the windage tray from the factory but not 100% sure.

JRSully question was specifically asking about the 1970 L-78 engine,which is why I did not want bring up other engines.
