I had someone tell me that GM made 2 pace car '69 Camaro's with the L89 option engine. Anyone know anything about such a thing? These would have to be very rare cars if there is such a thing.
The actual and back-up pace car were ordered as L89's but were changed to steel head engines before the race according to what I have read. I don't know if these are the two that were built or if there may be others. GM records would not list the combination of the L89 and Z11 options so someone would have to actually see the cars or paperwork to verify. If there is one, it would be rare.

From what I understand there is one that has the original POP and build sheet to document it. What would one of 2 cars be worth? If this car is for real, I would think it would bring over 100K easly.
Wow! What is the condition of the car with the POP? Does anyone have any pictures to post to support its current condition. I think a #1 restored car would peek over the 100K mark. If its an unrestored original low mile pacer who know what kind of price tag it could bring. Maxx

I'll take a Documented and restored L89 Camaro Rag top for $100,000.00 Z11, X22 or X66.

Correct, 2 L89's built for the race.
I've seen one other, with a POP.
Seen another, beautiful car but a fake with a new POP. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

How about an L89 with JL8 Stefano? I've been talking to a guy that has a supposed L89 but the original engine is gone but he has spoken with the original owner who said it had aluminum heads. It definitely has JL8 brakes.

Jeff,
It needs more than just a good story before I'll shell out the bucks. I only know of two Documented L89 Rag Tops and I would love to own one, especially with RPO JL8.

The car I'm told also has the build sheet. I wonder if someone could fake a build sheet.
The car I'm talking about is for sale and I'll try to get more information on the where abouts.

If you get me the #'s and any other info/docs, I should be able to help.

I'm meeting with my friend who is interested in the purchase at lunch today and I'll see what I can get.
I hope this is the real deal.

The car I'm referring to is a hard top with the JL8 brakes, not a convertible.

When you're talking $100K values, anything can be faked. Build sheets, POP's, titles, receipts back to new, etc. Much more important and difficult paperwork has been forged before. Buyer beware, as they say.... /ubbthreads/images/icons/frown.gif

That is one of the reasons the L78 rag top Camaro purchased by 'PuffDaddy' at B/J is such a special car.
While the previous owner did add/change a few items which would have been better off left untouched and original, it is still extremely original, low miles, numbers matching original Drive train, documented L78 4 speed, which is the highest RPO horsepower engine available in a convertible Camaro. Even the original tires come with the car.
For those who may think the price paid was smoke and mirrors, as had been rumored, a licenced dealer offered to buy it at a profit soon after the gavel had been dropped.

Stefano do you mean Sean "Puffy" Combs the rapper bought the L78 rag?? I didn't know that he was a muscle car fan. I thought he liked things like J-Lo and SUV's wit guns in 'em. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Frank,
Not the Rapper. There is a local very enthusiastic enthusiast known as "PuffDaddy".

The real Puff Daddy was looking at the Rolls Royce converted 76 Eldorado..diamond in the back..sun roof top...diggin the scene with a gangster lean.

So how can one protect himself now if everything including paper work can be re-produced? How do you know the difference? Can you tell a repo POP from an original?
By the way, the L89 pace turned out to be a clone.
Not suprised about the clone fact. Bummer

With the way documentation can be faked you can only go by you own feelings. Until GM releases documentation like they have with Pontiac we all will be guessing.
