Spoke to Jeff Dotterer last night, he mentioned that Caliper backing plates/Alternator fans/and Coil Brackets on say a 70 L78 were actually Galvanized, and that nobody has been able to reproduce that. I was under the impression that at least the caliper backing plates were gold or silver cad plated. he went on to say that everyone uses the silver zinc paint, closet thing to the galvanizing, Any thoughts on this, trying to see what is considered correct and restore accordingly. Thanks as always

most of the galvinized parts we do in zinc. No paint. The zinc can be flattened on some parts depending on how you prep it.

Excuse my ignorance, but why not just get these parts re-galvanized at a hot-dip galvanizer such as this one

or this one?

Jeff is correct. I just cleaned up some survivor Chevelle backing plates and the galvanzing is very evident.

Sam, the reason for not using todays galvanizing process (correct me if I am wrong anybody) is due to a cold galvanizing vs hot. Todays gavanizing is much courser that was done orignally. As Micky stated, it is much better to zinc them and dull them down a touch.

Thats the biggest deal, I have not found a process yet that is a good substitute for the way it was done. The zinc seems to hold up better over the long haul also.

WOW! What timing.

Have just started restoring my 68. Have started on the front end and am trying to figure out what coatings go where. The Caliper brackets look like they have remnents of Zinc. What about the other parts. Does anyone have some detailed pictures or writing explaining or showing what coatings go on what on the 68 Camaro front end brakes sterring etc..

Thanking you in advance.
