View Full Version : People bashing
From time to time, we here at the sYc get a request(s) to delete a certain thread and/or post. Most times it concerns a personal attack on another board member. We hate them as much, or maybe more, then other viewers. But, we have to watch how we handle these requests, because it could give the impression that we were taking sides, and often times, simply adds fuel to the fire.
But, it does need to stop. Why? Because, if we (and I say we) continue bashing each other, we will destroy the very hobby we all say we love. I am not talking about car bashing. As much as it hurts when it is your car, that is part of it. A show does not go by that some "expert" has something negative to say about one of my cars. But as a friend told me not long ago, quoting his father,"forget the one negative and focus on the 100 positives". How true. I am talking about an attack on the person, such as his business, his reputation or his integrety. This should not be done in public, unless for the isolated cases of out and out fraud. Most members on this board are successful businessmen, who make numerous business deals every day, with some not going the way we think they should. Right or wrong, that is part of life (and business). And, when this happens, we move on. We need to do the same with fellow board members. If not, here is what will happen. Instead of one big group, getting along, we will have several little groups, all thinking they are right. And after awhile, the groups will began avoiding each other, going as far as not attending such and such shows if whats his name is there. Once this begins, many of the supercars will disappear from the publics view. And, forgotten. Who loses? ALL of us. We are a small group, whose very existence depends on what we do as a group. We can continue to work together to keep these cars at the top of the muscle car world, or we can fight and self destruct. How can I perdict this? Simple, look at the Corvette world the last 25 years. Once they were considered the ulitmate musclecar, and had one huge show (Bloomington), which was second to none. All other shows were compared to that show. Then came the infighting, or politics as some call it. Who had the best, rarest, most correct etc. They got caught up in the fake, clone, restamp and deals gone sour issues (some in court). That is were some of the new money in our hobby is coming from, Vette owners tired of the games. Yes, I know all of this happens, but how we deal with it what is important. We can either turn the other cheek when something does not go our way and focus on the postives, or we can let it get to us, to the point of taking the fun out of owning a supercar. We can not elimenate all of the negative posts, after all, some of our board members are putting their lives on the line to defend the right of "free speech". But, if the majority of us who really do love this hobby decide to keep it "above board", that is a start. And for the others, simply ignore, they will soon vanish, as it takes 2 to fight. Thanks for listening.

SYC,I agree 100% with you on your post. And also life is too short anyway to have these type of conflicts. The hobby to me is just so I can enjoy all the nice cars and hav FUN,and in my book allthe cars are nice to me it doesent matter if it is a $400,000.00 or a 40,00.00 dollar car.I think most of the people that come to this site are pretty nice people and have helped me out a lot on the numerous questions I have asked about different things.I feel that if someone has a legitimate problem with an individual, and you have some evidence to back it up that is one thing.Something like that could help others BEWARE especially if someone is a rip off artist. But even something like that should be monitered and not let it get out of hand.

Tom,
Well said. This is a great forum to hash out the particulars of the Super Car Hobby, but personal attacks justified or not should not be tolerated at all, that way you don't have to worry about which side your on.
Marlin,
In my family/culture it is a custom to plant a big wet juicy kiss on the individual you are greeting..... I guess the handshake and a Rolling Rock will do /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

I also agree Tom. We should all pretend we are married to each other..this way we will hardly ever talk !! Seriously...this isn't the place for personal stuff. I also made a new year resolution to be more serious and not goof off on this site as much...but when Stefano starts planting wet juicy kisses, how am I supposed to leave that alone ?

Bobby,
While I appreciate your complements /ubbthreads/images/icons/blush.gif , you just like Frank and Marlin are not getting a kiss from me, no offence. As you may infer I have already had one of those kiss and tell relationships with Belair62 and I am just too sensitive to go through it all over again.

Tom,
Very well said albeit a little overdue. As a guest and non-supercar owner, I must admit that I am a little nervous posting on here from time to time due to the acceptence level and bashing that takes place by some people. I am not a big business owner, don't own 1/2 million dollar home, and own 3 Impalas /ubbthreads/images/icons/blush.gif but I feel that not only can I bring a little to the hobby but more importantly, I have gained a wealth of information from this site. Today being no acception receiving invaluable transmission documentation from Joel Bruno. That is what this hobby is all about, helping each other out. I have not only gained tons of information and made some great friends but also gained several new restoration customers. At least one member has introduced me to several extremely rare finds and hopefully he did so in part because I took the time to help him with some restoration questions off line after he got nowhere from what I felt was due to them being non "supercar" related. Even after asking for help several times from some sYc members via e-mail, he got responses. Anything to do with Chevrolet questions are related as far as I am concerned.
I met several sYc people at VF this year. Most were nothing like I had expected and treated me as an equal, some were still cold but that is called nature and different personality. For the most part, they were just like me. I would hope I would not be treated differently if I owned a Supercar. There are some members on here that are close personal friends of mine who have not always made a good first impression but are super people, they just haven't figured out how to type it. Thank God I did not blow them off based on first impressions!
The point I am trying to make and Tom pointed out, we are all here for the same reason, out of love for cars. God help us all if this group goes the way of some of the Corvette groups. I got my restoration start with Corvettes and I never want to look back.

Well spoken. I'm not sure who or what exactly fueled this post but I agree. Our love for these rare unique Muscle Cars is something we all have in common reguardless of who we are or what we do. There is no room for negativity in what is supposed to be and is a fun hobby. We all have this one thing in common whether we own 10 Super Cars or have 10 dreams a night of someday owning one. That said I think there needs to be a new rule. With every post you need to attach a Super Car pic. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Unfortunately it happens on every message board. Most people are here to share knowledge and learn more so any personal disagreements should be handled off-board. Hopefully the future discussions will be constructive and not destructive.

Tom, as you know I don't post a lot when I do, it's a question or an answer I think I know something about.
The point I am trying to make is this is for questions and answers and some B.S. This is a great sight please keep it that way. Thanks Kim Howie /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

I agree with this post about people bashing, there is no need for that. As far as stating a problem with a parts dealer (who will be nameless at this time) and deliniating the problem and posting the problem on this site, there is a definite need for that, as I will be damned if I have a problem with a parts dealer and I am not going to say anything about it. If we are all in this hobby, then we need to stick together and let these shaky parts dealers now there is a large group of car people who know what they are doing. I was dissapointed when one of the moderators on this site didn't like my post on the dealer in question, but yet people bashing and car bashing was rampant up unto this point. That made me think this site was "in bed" with the parts dealer. Anyway, let us not be afraid to tell each other about problems with parts dealers, but kniocking cars or people should be kept off the site. Joel Bruno

Joel:
I'm not exactly sure what you are speaking of, but I can assure, this site is not "in bed" with anyone. This site is made up of many different people, from many locations, and from many walks of life...yet it seems to run pretty smooth for the most part. My thoughts are that "you reap what you sow", and those who knowingly do wrong will pay in the end...it all comes around. But, that doesn't mean that all of the dirty laundry needs to be aired out on this site. Communicating about "purposely made" bad business practices is a good thing, but a simple "I had a bad buying/selling experience with so and so, contact me offline for more details" is what we are striving for. I get tired of playing the "referree" in situations in which I have no business being involved, except that it takes place on a website which I maintain. I don't like to read the negative comments back and forth, and I've personally seen sites dissolve from such posts, and this will eventually run over into the hobby itself. I really don't want that to happen here, nor do I believe any one of the other members want that either.

I do think this forum should be used to share information, whether that information be positive or negative in nature. I do not think the forum should be used to level unsubstantiated acusations agains a business or against a person. If someone has a legitimate gripe, fine, let them give the reasons for their being disgruntled.
I am elated that this forum is always mature and gentlemanly. I guess it is due to the fact the members are all truely interested in the hobby and dont want to get mired down in B.S. You would be amazed how petty and imature people become
due to the fact of being able to post with anonymity on the internet.
Glad to be a part of this web site.

Thanks for all of the posts, emails and PMs. My first post was not directed at any one person. I simply wanted to do a little house cleaning. So with this in mind, we (sYc) will have a couple of rules. 1. any negative post must identify who and what it is about AND the poster must indentify themselves. Period!! We realize that negative posts can be useful, but only if done in a proper way. A good example of what is allowed was the thread by MHASSETT, concerning his dealings with J. Berry. We all knew who had posted, what it concerned and who posted it. 2. we want to encourage all posters to indentify themselves. If not, the post may be deleted. Thanks, Tom
Hi Tom, let's clear the air with my specific problem.E-mail me your phone # and we will discuss the situation. I apoligize beforehand if I seemed to direct a negative wave (for lack of a better word towards you), and I feel I can convey myself properly over the phone, as the typed word without any vocal or facial enunciation can confuse or offend.....Joel Bruno
The previous post is for Rob Clary. Let us talk about my specific problem.....Joel Bruno
