Does anyone know wha the status of Tom's Magazine is. I just came across the receipt for the Money Order that I sent last year. I still haven't seen a magazine.

My guess is he may not have enough money to pay the shipping for those of you who have not yet received your issue. Low or negative cash flow can do those things you know. The ones on ebay will pay for your shipping cost.

I am sure there are Postal laws concerning this type of dealing. Taking money with little or no plans of shipping product. He can keep my money (which he already has) and place it where the sun does not shine. I choose not to do business with people of poor ethics. And this comes under chapter XXII, article 26 on non bashing.

I have never started a new magazine, but I am sure it takes lots of time and lots of dough. He is going against all the Goliaths of the industry. Do you think the special Muscle Car Review a few months ago was not a direct response to Tom's magazine? They even pirated his work for the story on the Yenko Deuce that was taken at my shop. I have faith that the new Musclecar Power will be a hit. It is a larger format than any other magazine of its kind. Fresh ideas and a clean slate. I for one am pulling for this to work. Do you really want to read the one decent article a year from Super Chevy?..BKH /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Brian, I also hope the magazine does well and as I have stated, I can't wait for mine to arrive. But in my business, we have to remember the customer is first. And in this case the 9-10 month old subscriptions should have been sent out before selling them on eBay. Here in Oklahoma (with the exception of Tuttle) you dance with who you brought.I probably would have even bought shares of stock if he had went public or private, as I do want the magazine to be a big hit.But the guys who support a person should be first as they are the ones who will walk all the way with you.Just my 2 cents worth. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Guys,

The following is a message that Tom asked me to forward to all of you regarding the magazine and EBay sales.

"Gentlemen,

Please understand that the issues for sale in eBay were posted AFTER all subscriber issues were sent. Getting the first issue complete, and sent was my first priority. After I got the print order back from the printer, I began a 3-day (and night) process of stuffing and labeling envelopes. 10 tubs of magazines were delivered to the mailing company for sorting, bagging and processing. During this time I posted the issues on eBay - once all other work to get the subscriber copies was complete. Also, please remember how eBay works - once a transaction is complete, buyers send in their payment, then, after checks clear, items are shipped via the SAME Postal System handling subscriber copies! Ebay buyers are not getting special treatment while faithful subscribers do without. Come on guys. -Tom"

Tom "reviews" the site. So please don't sacrifice me to the Musclecar Gods. I am merely attempting to help the process out.

Casey.

I think Tom should give everyone who mailed in Payment between Jan.02-June 02 a free years subscribtion.Meaning they are already compt.for the year 04.Or at least a Free T-shirt included.
Seems fair as he held onto our payment for almost a full year, while someone who can bid on one on Ebay this month recieved their issue already and ahead of most everyone else... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif

Maybe we should consider that our early payments helped Tom invest his time, efforts, AND his own money to get this magazine off the ground. If it's as good as we all hope, we will have had a part in it. Helping in the success of a magazine so many have been crying for should be comp enough, IMO.

Mike,

A little good natured grumbling aside, I don't think anyone here has a real problem with it taking so long for the magazine to come out. Look back at the timeline on the posts here. The real P&M started when the thing became available on eBay before the vast majority of "Charter Subscribers" had received their issues. That's where he crossed the line! You could see it coming last week, and sure enough, it's now documented right here that eBay buyers have received theirs before subscribers. Wrong, plain & simple.

Not getting the magazine in the hands of those who were there from the begining prior to listing, selling and shipping off ebay is bad business plain and simple, no matter how good the magazine may be. It is not the $$$$'s at issue it is the principle.

Fellas, you have to admit, Tom Shaw has b*lls. First, he takes our money and sits on it for a year before we ever get a magazine. Then, he lists it on Ebay before some subscribors get theirs. He would not come on this board to defend himself, had others doing his dirty work, and last, but not least, started up his own BB and promoted it on this one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif Well, sorry Tom, "this boards for me". /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

RE MUSCLECAR POWER!
6 great things abt. this magazine.

1. I received mine today, and thats here in Norway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

2. It was packed very good, as a fact better than any other magazine i subscribe on.

3. I opened it and found the paperquality better than any other of the 4 magazines i subscribe on, and it was waaaaaay bigger, and thats good.

4. The features, I loved the Yenko, then you had the feature re. Yenko cars, and his dealership.(great job BKH, and T Shaw), and the feature of the charger and 429 Boss was just as great, and the pure stock stuff, hmmmmmmm....

5. Lots of nice colour pictures, and the 3 page poster will be great if it comes in every magazine.

6. T Shaw folowed up good when i was entering my subscription, but didnt send me a t-shirt, but as good as this magazine was my guess is that the shirt will also come through.

THIS IS TRULY A GREAT START FOR PROBABLY THE NEW AND BEST MUSCLECAR MAGAZINE THAT WILL BE ON THE MARKET. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Guys,

I hear everyone complaining about TS and his magazine but having no other real options. I have one: I know of a major player in the automotive hobby who has the name recognition, ethics, writing experience, and parts background that has been considering launching a "Rodders Journal" type mag (subscription only) for the last year but only with this twist: no advertising....ever! A "No Advertising" edict is the only true way to get an unbiased opinion at everything (look at Consumer Reports at 21 million subscribers strong), especially in this hobby. All the real numbers for launching the mag have been ran and re-ran and the only unknown is if the old car hobby really wants to put their money where their mouth is and support a real Musclecar magazine that will have a truly unbiased opinion. This magazine would not only contain articles on parts comparisons but also high quality journalism on the industry plus full features of top quality cars throughout the hobby.

Another issue is the fact that if true unbiased parts comparisons were to be printed in a national magazine like this, the fallout to the publisher could be the end of his career if the hobby didn't support him and the mag. Do we really want to support the real truth in this hobby or just keep complaining?

Also shipping delays would not be a problem as what is being experienced by most on this board...............RatPack...................

Thanks for the offer, but I'm hanging in there. I've had the flu for the past 3 weeks so I'm pretty much brain dead by now. It's still kind of amazing that he sent them all out weeks ago and people in other countries and people who bought them off Ebay already have theirs. What does that say for our wonderful postal system. If you sent me your copy, it would never get here and neither of us would have one then. It will probably show up today.

Wish a musclecar mag would come out with the RJ type features.

Rat_Pack
02-28-2003, 09:43 PM
Whitetop, that is the type of magazine that he is looking to produce. High quality pictures of restored musclecars and old drag cars, articles on the reproduction parts as to what fits and does not fit, plus the top quality journalism that he is accustomed to. The one big plus, NO ADVERTISING!!! Have you looked through most of what Primedia offers these days? About 50% advertising, even more if it is one of the Trucking, Mini Truckin, or Street Rodder magazines. The only thing preventing this magazine from getting off the ground is the support of the restoration enthusiast such as everyone on this board.

I myself would love to see such a magazine as the Rodders Journal is hands down the best magazine on the market related to cars. This person frequents this board but is not signed on so we must show our support and ideas if we have any.....................RatPack..................

Not to put a damper on things, but with 3 musclecar magazines already being published, and hopefully being supported, I do not see how another one could survive. As much as we would like to think that our hobby is king, with a huge following, it is not. We are simply a small niche in the whole scheme of things. And, any publication, unless written by a computer, will be bias. Whether it is for a certain make or model, or even a certain dealer, it will be there. That is human nature.

Rat_Pack
03-01-2003, 05:17 AM
As far as pricing it will probably be along the same lines as TRJ and it will be a quarterly magazine. Then it may become something more but I cannot speculate. It really all depends upon what the hobby wants.

Tom, you cannot put a damper on things when the current magazines that are available are no where near the quality of The Rodders Journal. TS has already proven that he cannot deliver what he promised a year ago and is still having trouble delivering it after a few more "promises" less than a few weeks ago. Even Super Chevy, CarCraft, PHR, and even HotRod are not the same quality magazines they were 10, 5, or even a year ago. Before MCR got dumped it was not what it was earlier in its life. How many times can the life history of Don Yenko or Vince Piggins be discussed and told a different way? Not many and I think it has been "over done" far too many times. Lets see articles about the car in the picture, or the owner of the car, or the exact history behind that car, not the story of how similar cars came to be and a two paragraph article about the owner and the car.

As far as being bias, I don't think Consumer Reports is done by a computer and it does just fine. What determines bias in a magazine geared towards telling the truth is advertising. By not having any advertising there cannot be any bias when the facts are laid out.

Are any of those publishers willing to go out and produce a magazine in which they compare the parts of "Advertiser A", who puts up big money each month to help produce that magazine, to a part with the same application from another source? TIf they do, do you think that "Advertiser A" will let them bash the piece of s--- parts they sell and still want to advertise in that magazine? I don't think so. This is something that has been needed in the industry for years and now is the time to see if all of the "bit..ers and moaners" want to see something done about the parts that they buy. Right now there is a person willing to take this chance with great risk to his reputation in the industry.

I for one cannot have enough musclecar magazines. That is like to much fun...........there is no such thing! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif...............RatPack.................

Lets here some more input from others out there.

whitetop
03-01-2003, 02:25 PM
I think for any musclecar magazine to survive they are going to have to take a 180 degree approach to how car features are done today. The days of showing another '70 Chevelle 454 in 2 pages with several paragraphs of script are over...if they want to survive. I'm sick of seeing these type of features and I know I'm not alone. Besides, I have 50 other old musclecar mags in my basement with articles on '70 454 Chevelles in the same light.

Rodders Journal does not just feature a car they give the complete history of the car. The mag has a very strong human interest appeal and sometimes it seems the cars are secondary. For you people that have never seen it it's almost beyond description. A few issues back for instance, they had a feature on a '32 Ford coupe and showed the complete transformation of the car from 1955 up to the present in all it's different stages: under construction, show car days, drag days and back to a show car. The guy who built the car at age 13 had 4-5 jobs to save the money and no one at the local speed shop believed he had the car until he showed up with it. And it was the best detailed car they had ever seen. The feature was 9-10 pages long with 15-20 photos.

Here is how RJ would feature say a ZL-1. Start back in '69-'73 and show how the car was brought home, built in the owners garage, at the paint shop getting lace and endless lines. Shots of the car in the garage circa 1971 with the engine being pulled out or on a car hauler. Pics of the car in '83 being run as a bracket car with SB and how it was finally found and restored with pics. Topped off with lots of history on how each owner modified or restored the car.

Yes Ratpack, I would like to see a "Musclecar Journal"

------Have been following this thread with interest.Just read thru the current issue of Hot Rod,and have to agree with the former posters.Hot Rod is an Edelbrock catalog nowadays, and, other than habit,I really dont see much reason to read it.What a sad day,as I used to really look forward to recieving Hot Rod and Car Craft.Gave up on Car Craft a couple of years ago after sticking with it way too long.I dont even pick up Car Craft at the news stand and leaf thru it anymore. You cant tell me that Primedia has any journalistic integrity whatsoever.I used to think Larry Dobbs had what Primedia lacks but he took the money and ran as so many others have(cant say I blame him).
-------After saying all this I sort of feel like a dinosaur as it seems that Primedia is actually planning ahead for all us old guys demise so they can concentrate on the so called young guys(demographics ya know). However, the real secret is that there is a whole lot of life left in us geezers, and we still have alot of purchasing power that we can direct any way we want.A Rodders Journal type muscle type magazine could be a very viable alternative to the dreck we are recieving today!..........Bill S

I used to have subscriptions to several magazines and I enjoyed reading them for most of the articles even if it was a simple test of air filters to see what performed on the dyno and what didn't. I haven't had a magazine subscription since the demise of MCR so I hope Tom Shaw can put together a good magazine and keep it going. Or else we'll be stuck with nothing but 'Tuner' crap. My 2 cents, We all have looked at the same cars in diff mag's, with a quick story that for the most part looks it was photo copied from the last time the car was in the mag, NOT to take anything away from the cars it just gets a little boreing reading the same Bio again. I really like the History of the rides!, It would be great if all you shared the history on your cars in a mag, from the chase to getting it home then the tracking of owners back to new, the resto or how cool of a survivor it is. It would make for great reading, there are some great cars around but not all of us little guys get to see them, which leads to a group of fellas that talk amongst themselves about the cars,I agree there are plenty of mag's on the stands but if one was dedicated to a journal of a car that would sell big time,

Bud.

You hit it right on the head about Hot Rod & Car Craft. I remember when CC had 160 pages. The April issue of CC has 98 pages with about 50% ads. Plus they use the cheesiest thin paper. The whole mag was 1/8 thick. 12-13 years ago I remember going to the newstands and seeing 7-9 different musclecar mags. Now its Tuner, Sport Compact, Sport Truck, Honda Tuning, Mini Truckin etc.

I'm with Whitetop and Bud. I'm sick of the same boring description of how many GTO's or Chevelle were made. I want to hear about the cars. I liked the little blurb on the bottom of the Boss 429 story talking about how to make the cars actually run. I would have liked some more of that type of info. I like the articles in Sports Car Marketplace where they write about what to look for in a collector car, what are their strong points and what weak points should you look for. I wouldn?t mind seeing slightly modified cars too.

I think the best part of the Muscalar Mags of today are the readers rides. They are short, but are more personable than even the featured rides. I do get sick of the "lets compare parts" to see they are going to show how much horsepower two different cams make; and by the way one after market cam was put with factory parts and the other one had an intake headers and different rockers with it. Yea great comparison. Would love an apple to apple comparison from different companies as to help me with my restoration. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

I got my first copy of Musclecar Power today. The so-called Premier Collectors Edition. Excellent reading and good info. Looks like Shaw is on the right path and I hope he can sustain it.

Enjoy your cars.

I verified my subscription and address with Tom and he said to let him know if I don't see it in 2 weeks. I'll give it time. I still can't believe this time spread that people are receiving their magazines though. They showed up on bay after all the mags were sent out, but that was over 2 weeks ago already and people in other countries have theirs by now. This is something beyond Tom's control, but he may want to look into what happened to try and make sure it doens't happen in the future.

Finally got my magazine today. It's a great magazine, that's for sure. I still don't understand the huge difference in delivery times though. I'm glad the mag came delivered in an envelope instead of just an exposed magazine.

Hello! I would really really appreciate it if someone could please mail me a copy of the magazine when they are finished reading it. I have yet to receive my copy, nor can I find one here in the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area. Please let me know and if someone has a e mail address for Tom Shaw I would like to send him an email to see where my magazine is. I spend money for advertising and dont even get to see my ad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

I received 2 from Tom so far. I sent the $9.95 for the premier issue at the first notification of it a year ago, then one from my yearly subscription as well. Either it was that or maybe they just sent me Carl's too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Just watch for the T-shirts and the second issue of the magazine to appear up for auction on eBay. You can bet us loyal subscribers will have ours a few weeks after that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Just talked with Tom last week he assured me all is well and will be smooth from here on out and the shirts are coming he said, we will see,

I teased him about being out playing and not running the shop and he said NO Way he was full in on the deal and was makeing it work no matter what.

I talked to Tom at SCR6 and he told me he was still working on the second issue. He photographed several cars there and I can expect a writeup on SCR6. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

"Talked to Tom last week,he assured me all is well" Of course it is he has our money!!! I am speaking for knowone but myself and I am truely disappointed.I do not feel misled as I see no where on the 1st issue where we are promised a monthly issue or a hint of when there will be a second one.
I purchased a second one off ebay this summer for around $8.00 if I remember correct and it's the same exact issue I paid several times that for months before it came out! Why??
I guess the cover does say Premier Collectors Edition ,,sounds about right it might be the only one!
If he was still taking pic's at SCR 6 for the second issue thats a bad sign as to when we will receive it.
Im a small business man and I see this approach nowhere in the pages of starting a new business 101.
If you read the editorial on page 4 you'd think we were really in for a suprise,,,we were 1 magazine.
Yep im mad ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif

I still have faith Tom will come through. He's been an asset to the hobby for a long time. Primedia gave him a raw deal taking Muscle Car Review away. So he took it upon himself to start up and put out the biggest and best publication for muscle cars out there. The first issue is tribute to that. It's got to be tough being a one man show without tons of corporate backing. Let him get up to speed so Muscle Car Power can grow and make us all happy again. I'm patient.

<font color="blue"> How ironic is it that the quote above was dated 1/03?????? The guy got money back in 12/02, and here we all are on 10/03 with only one issue to show for all this anticipation. I'm starting to feel screwed. Other magazines, including the one put out by his old boss Paul Zazarine are able to come out at least bimonthly. What's Shaw planning, a biannual magazine? 6 issues over 3 years? Nice guy, best of intentions, but......</font>

There is an answer to all the die hard Chevy guys, its called Chevy Rumble. It is a bi-monthly and reports are its going to be monthly. Doug Marion has got some experience in the business, and so does John Dianna.

Subscription # is 866-515-5600, outside the USA 810-735-5600

I recieved an e-mail from Tom Shaw--he said they are laying out the second issue and copies should go out shortly. I hope they make it -- because I think their magazine would be just plain good for the hobby, if it ever gets out on a regular schedule, so here's hoping it just gets out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif-----------JoeG
