Ok guys, my belts are nice but the Cal sun got'em, I talked to the guy up in BC that is always selling belts on e-bay but wouldnt let on how did his belts so nice, he did say he runs them through his dish washer after coloring them with the buckles wraped in plastic, ever heard of that??, claimed his upholstery guy did them for him?? uhaa, Any place I can read step by step how to do a decent job on them, with out pulling the buckles off of them, also concerned with the date tags not getting messed up in the process, going back fresh black.
Thnx for any help, Bud.

I used vinyl spray paint that you can purchase at most any auto store. The NAPA brand seemed to be the best MARTIN SEYMOUR used to be the brand name.I also used it on faded carpet!!!! Worked great,,that was like 18 yrs ago. carpet is still black. Then you could tape off around your tags, and buckles that stuff has good covereage so 1 coat should be plenty. Sounds like a chincy way to do it, but it works. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Al

I have a old belt i will try it on first, I dont think it sounds bad, did it make them stiff after spraying them?, That is the part i have been concerned with, I suppose that is why the other fella ran them through the dishwasher.

Well I am not a chemist but the vinyl paint is more plyable than regular paint. I don"t know what chemical makes it that way? Practice first, the stuff covers good so more than 1 coat should not be needed. Plus the price is right!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif Al

Ssnake Oyll restores your belts reasonably I think...not sure if thats the correct spelling...

People that restore seatbelts recommend you use regular fabric dye available at most stores. Brand name is RIT. It will not wear off or stain your clothes. Mix up the solution and throw them into the bucket. It will not hurt the chrome or plastic. The only problem is the white date code patches. Might be able to do this part carefully by hand with a brush. Just about all colors are available.
A friend of mine put his in the dishwasher. Wife got upset but he said they came out nice. I am not recomending it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thnx Guys, I will go for it, they are faded now and have that kinda purple look where the sun got'em. I might try dipping one at a time and hand painting around the date code tag and hang em to dry. The guy in BC says to run'em through the dishwasher after dyeing them, I asked him what his wife thought about that and he fell out of his chair laughfing when I asked him that, he claimed he does it all the time, he must, he seems to always have a few really nice sets for sale, I dont know if I am brave enough to try it though, our machine is only 2 yrs old, I think I would not be long for this world if redyed the dishwasher. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Mine were "faded" but after cleaning them with TSP and a stiff brush, they came out black. I had bought some RIT to dye them, but did not need it. After cleaning, they were also much mor pliable.

What is TSP?? I would rather clean them than Dye them by a long shot, probably should do that before dyeing them anyway.

Stuck my old stiff and dirty belts in a pillow case, tied it shut, then threw them in the washing machine along with some Tide and sudsy ammonia. Came out clean and soft, (didnt need dyed) looked like new. Just call me Suzy Homemaker! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Hey Suzy you prefer liquid or crystal soap /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

03-05-2003, 01:30 AM
Liquid, powders might not disolve completely, and can leave yucky stuff on your clean clothes, er, .....I mean seat belts. Sorta sounds like a commercial dont it? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif
and by the way, TSP means trisodium phosphate, a generic cleaner. You might have to search for it though, depending on what your state laws are on phosphate cleaning products.

Budnate,
I just want to give my 2 cents here. The original owner of my car smoked which stained the white tags on my seat belt. I took them to the dry cleaner here in town to see if she had an answer. I came back in a couple of days and the belt and tag I gave her were now clean. I asked what she used and she told me she thought she'd try that "oxyclean" stuff advertised on the TV infomercial. It worked. And it didn't mess up the date code stamping on them either!

Dang Guys, I am confused as what to do now, The fact is they are kinda that purple look to them and I have seen that years ago and assumed they were faded from being in the sun in Arizona and Cal, were any of your belts looking like that before cleaning them, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Sounds like they are faded, but it makes sense to clean them before you dye them!

Well obviously I know what I'm talking about because I have had to clean up a squad after another fellow deputy who smoked got a new car and I got his. Believe me the windows had a dirty brown yellowish film on them which was all over the paper towels I used to try to get it all off the windows. You saying that the smoke hasn't penetrated the seat belts is just plain dumb. Be it smoke stain or years of ageing the Oxyclean producted worked. You can keep your stupid comments to yourself. Get real.
I suppose you also believe that when you're in a bar with people who smoke, you can leave and the smoke smell stays in the bar? The smoke penetrates your clothes and makes you smell like smoke. I suppose also you believe that smoke can't penetrate your lungs either and people who died because they smoked for many years is just a bunch of crap because the smoke can't penetrate your lungs! Wake up! I'm through posting here. Sorry to everybody I've tried to HELP. I'll keep my information and knowledge to myself now. Thank you
Sorry to those who smoke here at this board. I don't care if anybody smokes. I just used it as an example of what I did to get my seat belts clean again. I was just trying to HELP somebody so he has another option to explore so he doesn't ruin the belts.

I have cleaned hundreds of belts for resale.Heres what I have found to work the best.Get a bucket (5 gal) add a strong solution of simple green and fill it up with HOT water and forget about it for a day.Empty the bucket the next day,all the scum will seperate from the belts.Soak them again.Rinse them in cold water and brush them with a scrub brush inside your wash tub to remove anything left.Shouln't be much.Hang them out to line dry.The last thing to do is to iron them flat (remove wrinkles).Use a old board, not broad,so you don't PO the Misses. If they need a recolor Rit works fine for black.I have also used a light mist of spray dye to add more color to a stubborn area.Several light coats work fine,no build up on the webbing and they remain soft.I have used Oxyclean,it works fine as well. Now is also a great time to dissasemble the buckle to clean and detail it.Deluxe are a little harder to take apart,be paitient. After a little cleaning everything works and slides eaiser....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif I also collect alot of vintage gauges, smoke will almost always discolor the faces....It's gets/ruins everywhere and everything. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Steve;
I also used the bucket trick, I was amazed at what came out of the belt - not once, but 3 times! I didn't know about ironing them, some still have some wrinkles I will have to try that method if they don't come out on their own.
Thx,

Hey guys, I just read this thread for the first time as my friend may have to dye his dark blue belts, will that work as good as black? Hey Ron, I would think the last thing you would have to worry about in the patrol car would be cigarettes, I know you have had more than one Saturday night puke fest in the back seat at one time or another, eh? Thats what trustees are for right? I smoke like a chimmney but I refuse to smoke in my classic cars, seems kind of silly to me to spend have my life detailing the thing and then build a bonfire in it! I spend enough time out of the car getting fuel or standing next to it while getting a speeding ticket that it gives me plenty of time to smoke. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif The only smoke I want in my cars are from the rear tires, best air freshener in the world for a classic cruiser. Anyway, I can honestly say I did not have anything to do with the tension in this thread...darn, missed out on another one. Seems like lately it is either my fault or Marlins. But, nobody has managed to chase either of us away. Also, I learned something here, I never knew they were seat belts, I always thought they were SEX belts! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
