Ok Guys let me ramble a little, I am sure you will be able to identify it, Lord knows I have tried to figure it out for at least 25 yrs. It was made around the time of two lane Blacktop I think. Here is the story line lets see if we can figure it out.
Starts with a guy comeing to town for the Nationals or some big race, everyone shows up early to street race and make a few bucks, he crashes his Dart, in the begineing. Boy meets Girl, Old guy in wrecking yard likes him and agreas to loan him a car if he whips the local bad guy that is also a police officer, Old guy gives him a gray Primered Whilly, guy steals copcar with Hemi? puts in Whilly you get the picture i dont want to wreck it for you if we find this thing, It is a cool movie, But I never seen it on TV or can find anyone that recalls it either, I will be 40 soon and if I recall I was like 12ish when I saw it, I will pay well for a copy or a leed to purchase it, Started thinking about it again today and has been driveing me crazy, I know with the vast knowledge here it will show!
Thnx Bud. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

The title was "Hot Rod" but also had several other titles when it was the TV movie of the week on ABC in '78-'79. It is available on video tape.

Remember the movie "Outrage" with Robert Stack? It was also a ABC movie of the week in '74. 3 neighborhood kids terrorized a family and in one scene ran over the pet St. bernard. Cars included a tunnel rammed '56 Nomad (got burned up at the end by good guy Robert Stack), a '70-'72 Camaro and can't remember the third.
I remember a T.V movie from '76-'77 that had a red Olds 442 being trailered around the country by two guys that drag raced it. Anybody remember this one?
ABC must of had a car guy on board because the movie "The California Kid" was also shown in '74-'75

Yes that is a good one also,
I dont recall the one about the 442 being drug around that one has me wanting to check it out as well,
Basically I Love them all , I must have worn out my HollyWood Knights vid where the 57 and the Cobra go at it, I love the sound of the 57 when he hits it hard through second, then you see the oil down when they hurt the motor.
Cant leave out old Don Johnson and the yellow 57 they raced across country, Hey I wonder how much that car will bring at Auction, he must have farted in that one as well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

Robert Stack did play in Outrage. Hot Rod the movie had Robert Culp in it. He played the bad guy Munns Root Beer.

Someone just told me the movie with the red '68-'69 Olds 442 was a T.V. pilot for a series that never made it to series. The rig they pulled this car around in was painted red. They drag raced the car from strip to strip and circle track raced it at the end and demolished the car. Surely somebody remembers this movie.
"Corky's Cuda" has a great scene in the beginning with Robert "The Killer" Blake street racing a '69 Camaro SS. There is also a nice shot of a '70 Chevelle SS in Blake's boss garage.
Does anybody remember the blue '75 Camaro from Walking Tall Part 2. Cragars, side pipes, tunnel rammed engine. Remember what Buford did to this car...slowly?

Yes! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif Two Lane Blacktop is my all time favorite movie too. Richard Ruth built 2 similar 55 chevy's for that movie and the main drive car (the one they show all the motor shots of) had a tunnel rammed L88 427. During the filming of Two Lane that '55 actually clocked 10.90s at over 130mph. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What's really sad is a guy in PA owns the original American Graffiti '55, which also happens to be the same car from Two Lane Blacktop. He bought it off of Steve Fitch who owned this car and the Milner '32 at one time(he purchased both from universal studios). He is totally changing the car. Put in a rear seat(which neither movie had), different upholstery (maroon vinyl), got rid of the straight axle, roll bar was hacked out etc. If he was going to make all these mods why not just start out with another car?
hvychev
03-04-2003, 03:56 AM
Im sure that most of you know that the 55 Chevy that was in Two Lane Blacktop was the exact same car that was in American Grafitti. They just painted it primer and added some goodies to it. Legend has it the it is sitting in a barn somwhere on the west coast.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. Actually it's like this. There were 3 55's made for TLB by Richard Ruth in 1970. 2 were nearly identical in all aspects suspension, looks, etc. except for engines. The most popular one was the drive car with the tunnel rammed 427. This car was also used in an episode of Adam 12 in full TLB trim. This is also the car that got a makeover for use in American Graffitti. This car now resides somewhere in Maryland and most of the original Ruth built parts are gone as whitetop stated. Budnate got it right with the recently found 2nd car that was used for interior shots. This car carried all the framework for exterior camaras and crap and appeared the same as car #1 except it had an LS5 454 4bbl and had a holley mounted on a piece of sheetmetal to give the appearance of the tunnel ram through the windshield in some shots. This car was recently found in Canada and had spent most of it's life since TLB as an American Graffitti clone! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif A good deal of the original parts were missing on this car as well, most notably the custom straight axle front suspension and custom fenderwell headers. Someone mounted a Camaro sub-frame to it. A few of the original fiberglass parts were found and the man who built the car to begin with (Ruth) is aiding in its restoration to full Two Lane Blacktop trim. (btw, if you want to see Richard Ruth he is in the movie, He is the guy in the white shirt who walks over and checks out the car when they stop for gas and asks about the headers). The 3rd car was just a rolling junker they were going to use for a rollover crash scene that was never filmed for TLB. I belive that car was used in the roll over scene in Graffitti. And there was a 4th car used in Graffitti for the car that burned after the roll over if you didn't know that. Just this past year the two original TLB 55's were displayed together for the first time since the filming of the movie at a show in Maryland. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Now I'm getting the urge to pop in TLB and watch it for the 1000th + time. The sounds that 55 makes when James rows the M22 through the gears just gets the old blood flowing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif "Run 'er flat out for a while"

You are right. Robert Culp played Dr. Jim Kiler on Outrage-1973.
Great movie. I saw it 2 times and wish I had taped it.
What was the third car? I remember the Nomad and Camaro pretty well. I'm thinking it was an ElCamino of sorts?
budnate
03-04-2003, 02:57 PM
55 chevy, The story I read said the third car was a driver with a LS-5 TH-400 with extra rollcage work, The idea for that car was when he spun out in the field scene they were supposed to roll over the third car up on the Highway, But no-one on the filming crew had the exsperiance or maybe the nerve to do it, Richard said he had riged the brakes independent left and right to help roll the car. it was the one rolled in the end of AG like you say, then they burned a beater, The LS-5 was pulled after the movie and the rest sold for junk, at least thats what the story says in my, Feb,Chevy High Performance, Like I said great reading I never new about the third car, But did notice the two diff cars in the roll over and burn in AG like everyone else. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

That's right budnate. I do remember reading that now. I have that magazine as well. I didn't put much thought into the 3rd car when I made that post last night. I've been searching and collecting things on the blacktop 55's for several years now and I don't think I've ever seen any photos or much mention of the rollover car in TLB form. I think the only evidence of it is in the movie Graffitti when it rolled.

Marlin Dazed and Confused is one of my favorites! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif That movie helped launch Matthew McConaughey (Wooderson in the movie who had a Black/white stripe 70 Chevelle SS LS5 that he named "Melba Toast") and Ben Affleck (O'Bannion the bully, he had a primer grey 70-71 Duster) into stardom! The movie is a lot of laughs and it was my influence to play "mail box baseball" with my Chevelle! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif The dialouge in the movie is a bit weak but the movie was still good none the less. A couple of other good cars in the movie are the 70 GTO Judge in Orbit Orange and the SD 455 Trans Am. I rate it 3 stars!
On another note I think that someone mentioned the Mustang or whatever that car was in "Corkey". That thing has been for sale in Auto Trader for years! No one seems to be interested.

Speaking of old movies, what was the movie where they were trying to control all the gas stuff. I think it was something like Road Warrior? with Mel Gibson? Was that it? I just remember a supercharger on the engine. I don't remember what kind of car it was though. Anybody remember?

Ron that movie is one of three in the Mad Max trilogy staring Mel Gibson. Mad Max (1979) was the first, then Road Warrior (1982) and finally Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). The car which they called the "interceptor" was one of those Aussie GM Holden Mustang/Torino's I think. One of our Members GMH 454 could probably elaborate more.

As someone who lives on a rural road and has replaced 3 mailboxes in 9 years I'm sorry to hear you did that kind of stuff. A farmer down the road made a remedy to having his mailbox vandalized. Installed a homemade one about 10 years ago and no problem since. It has a solid metal 8" I-beam post, a 14-15" metal pipe about 3/4 thick for the box itself and welded on top of that front to rear is a cutter bar with spikes from an old mowing machine. You hit this baby with a bat and it may end up killing you. At least it would break an arm...hopefully.
Mel Gibson is surrently making a 4th Road Warrior movie. Title is Road Warrior: Road to Salvation. Will end filming in Nambia this summer.

I have been trying to find a movie called "The Racing Scene" with James Garner 1969. It is a documentary type movie where a film crew followed the Garner racing team around to races in 1969. There are clips of Don Yenko and his crew racing a Camaro at Daytona. I saw the movie on Speed Channel and wanted to tape it but they never ran it again. I emailed a bunch of people but all say it is not available and only way to get it is a boot leg copy that some taped from Speed Channel.
Any one know a Speed Channel junkie who tapes the old movies?

Another good car movie was Dirty Mary and Crazy Larry. Started out with a mean sounding 4dr big chevy. I think it was a '66, but it's fuzzy now. They end up in a cool '69 Charger, yellow with black strips down the sides similar looking to the Motion stripes. There is another movie that is vaguely in my mind I saw yeeeears ago in my childhood. Can't remember much about it. There is a part in the movie where there's one guy chasing another guy and he ends up without a car somehow at somebodys house and the guy at the house says you can borrow my car and he opens this old shed door and pulls out a green (I think) '69 or so Mustang with sidepipes and (I think) alum. slot wheels. picked it from HotRod memories this week, really cool!! has allott of top fuel action, and all the factory door slamers, but I think they have the years wrong it may be '68/'69, there are abunch of 69 camaros in the first half and Mickey Thompsons Mach-1 Funny car as well,we dont get to see allot of Camaros run, the Mopars are beating up on people but still some nice Chey stuff running, anyway I really liked it, did abunch of frame by frame viewing of cars in the pits, I give it two thumbs up. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif
