How do can you tell the difference between an original and a repo cowl air filter?

If it's anything like the open element air cleaner on BB Novas, it is the style of the mesh. The original style has a square pattern to the mesh.

This is not entirely accurate.
You could have the square mesh,or Diamond mesh. They were both available back then.I have a Diamond mesh dated 1970 in the box,and Magazines that road tested cars back then clearly show Diamond mesh on some Muscle cars.
The repop square mesh has a "Glob" where the mesh cross sections meet,Originals are much more defined and clean.
Also the wording on the Original filters is different. The phrase began with "Best Way" and another without "Best Way".

I'm curious now about this. When I answered the question, I referred back to the Nova Times August 1998 article on the Shadow Gray NNN giveaway car. They show an original AC A212CW air filter and it has the square mesh. Is there any difference between the open air cleaner on the cowl induction hoods versus non cowl induction or closed element air cleaner? Seems to me, the air cleaner on my 70 Nova when I bought it from the original owner had the diamond mesh but I couldn't find any writing on it so I figured it had been replaced at some time. I think I've seen the square mesh reproduction being referred to as the correct one as original? Are both accepted as correct when it comes down to diamond judging? Or what is accepted as correct? Which one is found more commonly? I personally like the looks of the square mesh. Somehow I knew this would happen when I answered the question but I try to keep an open mind and try to learn something new every day.

A212CW Filter is correct for both Chevelle air cleaners, even Dual snorkle.
It seems to be the Square mesh is the preferred to Diamond design for most owners and judges.
I was just stating it wasn't always so.

That is why I like to know more information on this kind of stuff. Somebody once told me that my car couldn't have come with the side post battery that early. There seems to be an exception to everything. Nothing is in black in white with our cars. Thanks for pointing this out to me. Like I said, I try to learn something new everyday and I keep an open mind. I sure don't take any offense by any contrary information I see. I'm suprised SS427 hasn't jumped on this one. Rick you out there? Quit shoveling snow and get inside. LOL

Ron,
I haven't chimed in for a variety of reasons most of which are computer problem related.

mr70 is answering the questions correctly for you so no need for me to get in his way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

I should have added the word element to the caption.
This is great information.

We need more of this type preaching! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif
