View Full Version : NOS tires

What year or time frame did the "DOT" appear on regular production tires. The reason I ask is that I've seen early 70's vintage Goodyear tires with "DOT" on them which were not produced by the Reproduction Tire companies of today.
I've also seen a set of vintage Uniroyal Loredo tires of the correct size and exact kind which were used by GM for 67 vettes, and these had "DOT" on them. These were definitely NOS as Uniroyal quit making those many, many years ago, and no Company is reproducing them today.
With this question and realizing that there were NOS tires produced in the early 70's with "DOT" on them, do we still consider those NOS? If yes, the old rule of thumb of asking do they have "DOT" on them would not apply.

-----Have hung around Corvette circles a bit over the years and am pretty sure that D.O.T started sometime in the middle of the 67 model year. Those with a better memory will hopefully get you closer on the exact time frame..........Bill S

Hi Bill, we are probably thinking of the same 67 Vette vintage tires our buddy Jack Murray had, which were definitely NOS. He had an easy answer though, just take a razor blade and shave the "DOT" off. LOL.

The hardcore ISCA show car guys do that stuff all the time. I also think Boyd Coddington is starting to do it on all his high buck street rods. They remove all the lettering from a tire. After you remove the lettering you sand the surface with progessively finer grades of sandpaper.
I just sold a set of 5 Uniroyal Tiger Paw white letter F70X14 NOS tires.
No DOT label at all,and not shaved either..
I found two more that have a slightly different White letter font, and do have DOT label.
I believe the 5 without are dated 1968 and the set with is 1970-1.

I'd like to know how you read dates on tires. I have two sets of NOS tires but don't know what year tires they are. One set are E-70-14's (firestone super sports) and one set of F-70-14's (cooper pro 70). Both sets have DOT markings on them.

From JohnZ:
Don't know about Camaro tires, but here's the skinny on 1967 Corvette tires. Original tires do NOT have DOT markings, which are usually found near the bead on the back side of the tire. Original non-DOT 1967 Corvette tires had "4-Ply Rating - 2Ply Construction" molded in, and later DOT replacements have "Load Range B" molded into them instead. Corvette redlines were nylon construction with a 3/8" red stripe, and were either Firestone Super Sport, Uniroyal High Performance, or Goodyear power Cushion.

I would agree that original tires that came on a new car from the factory in the 60's would be non-DOT. But replacement tires of the exact kind made by the original tire manufacturer in the following several years, most likely could have had DOT on them. Wouldn't these fall into NOS category as they were vintage production by the same companies and not produced by the reproduction tire companies today such as Coker and Kelsey Tire Companies.
I suppose to answer my own question, the "correct" NOS tire for a car of that time frame would be NOS ones made earlier in production with no DOT label on it; rather than later production NOS DOT labeled tires, even though they were produced by the same tire manufacturer.

I still have the '69 F70X14 Uniroyal spare tire from our Chevelle. I'll have to check for the DOT. At some point it became illegal to run non-DOT tires on the roads, up here at least, in the cold frozen north.

I've run across many sets of laredo blackwall tires with the dot. I recall Kevin at LI corvette repair hade bought a few dozen in the mid 80's when I worked there. Many times I recall wet sandind the dot off. I think the were all post 70 runs. I'm not sure on the date.
Supercars, would Jack Murray be "Furry Murry" from Calif? And is that who you got the 64 big tank car from?

Did any muscle cars ever come with A 13 inch tire? What about the corvairs. The reason I ask is I found A set of NOS 13 inch tires with the stickers and tape still on them. I can't remember the size but it was the same type as my other sets only in 13 inch. I will check again if any one is interested in them.

Kevin, I just closed a deal on a long closed auto repair and tire shop which has not been open since the seventies when the owner died. His kid is currently filing bankruptcy and their attorney is my partner. Apparently all the stock that was in the place when it closed around 1971 is still there, in talking with the former owners son on the phone he indicated to me that there are almost a hundred sets of tires in the left over stock that are biasd ply, he said many are the single or double redline, others are lettered. Also included are well over a hundred sets on original shocks from GM, Ford, and Mopar still in original boxes, also a lot of mufflers, hoses, belts, and racks of other auto parts that have all been collecting dust from the late sixties/early seventies. I am going this weekend to start doing inventory and packing to move, if you need some correct NOS tires etc.etc., let me know in detail what you are looking for and I will put you on a list with your needs. Anybody else same thing. It sounds as if I have unearthed a treasure trove of stuff, it works well having a bankruptcy attorney as a friend and partner who is into classic vehicles, he has been paid for his services with everything from complete cars down to 12 bolt Camaro rearends and Rosewood steering wheels. Sounds like we stumbled on a good one this time. If interested let me know, as I get a list together I will post here what I am going to have available. Would the tires be any good after all these years? Maybe for show but not safe to run?
Thanks,
Motown

I'm after 5 F70-14 Firestone RWL tires for a 69. Probably Wide Ovals (not the 70+ versions that are being repro'd with the big O) or Sportscar 200 (if they came in that size).
Good luck with the inventory, sounds like a big project. Keep us posted... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

To everyone who sent me PM's or Emails on the tires and shocks, I have not forgot about any of you, I am currently working in the building with shocks and other parts, I hope to be getting to the tires later this week. Those who had contacted me first with specific reqirements will have first shot. Following is a partial list of factory eqipment shocks:
(2) 74-78 Mustang, front
(2) 71-80 Pinto front
(2) 59 Edsel,rear
(2) 65-73 Mustang, rear
(2) 75-80 Pacer, rear
(4) 77-79 Charger, rear
(4) 74 Fury, front
(2) 68-72 Apollo-Skylark-Nova, rear
(2) 68-72 Malibu, Rear
(4) 70-74 Monte Carlo, rear
(2) 67-74 T-Bird rear
(2) 72-79 Fairlane rear
(4) 63-82 Corvette front
(12) 64-70 GM rear
(8) 67-69 Camaro rear
There is way more than that, I only wrote down what someone else had wrote on the Boxes, they do have part numbers, I am sure many are interchangeable. I did not open the boxes to check for date codes. I am overwhelmed with all the stuff I have to load and bring home, I have not even went into the tire/muffler building yet except to look through the window. The boxes the shocks are in(plus all kinds of other parts, alternators, regulators, etc, etc,) are all marked either GM, Mopar, Or Ford/Motocraft. Just give me some time to find the time guys, those who contacted me I will get back with you one way or another.
Thanks,
