Jeff,
1953-54 Corvette engine, 155hp Blue Flame 6 Cylinder, three one barrel carbs. Zora Arkus Duntov hated it, one of the motivations behind the first overhead valve V-8 in 1955, 265 CI solid lifter with oiling problems which was the predecessor to the improved indestuctable 283 which made it's debut in 1957, also the first year for the Chevrolet/Rochester fuel injection system with generator drive tach. If I didnt get the "what is it" question right, I got the rest correct.
Thanks,
Motown /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Jeff, you told me I cant play anymore, I will leave that one for somebody else, if nobody gets it I will answer for you later today. Here is another little known fact relating to your engine test. Very few people know that Chevrolet's first V-8 was not 1955, it was actually in the 1920's I believe, it did not work that well so Chevy gave up on the idea. Ford took their idea, designed it less complicated and ran with it. The Flathead Ford V-8 was born. It is comforting to know that based on that fact, Ford STOLE the V-8 concept from Chevrolet, in the fifties Chevy just took back the idea and designed the V-8 that is still basically unchanged. Many of the parts are still interchangable from 1955 to present! Show me another car company that can claim that! It might be a neat idea to start a Chevrolet trivia catagory on this board, for all of us bored middle of the night guys.
Thanks,

Chevy had their first over head valve V8 in 1917-1918. Something around 287 cubic inch. Could be wrong on the size.

Keith,
That is the date I was searching the dark recesses of my mind for, hadnt thought about that in years. If I remember right one of the reasons for failure that Ford cleaned up on was the complicated for the time overhead valve configuration, Chevy was too far ahead of the times. So, I guess that would be Chevy's first Supercar?
Thanks,

And Chevy is the only American manufacturer that has built only overhead valve engines, no flat motors for Chevrolet! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

It is my understanding that the Chevy was/is a working man's car. The V8 drove the price of the car out of the working man's budget range. Sort of like the ZL1 Camaro, price wise that is. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Let's see, a diesel motor with everything routed up high in the air - could it be from a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HumVee)?
