The Chief Head guy is on the left. The technical paper in his hand is a 13 page white paper titled "Clearances and specifications for performance service-Chevrolet Mark IV Series 396, 402,427, and 454 Cu. In. Engines", a good data point to have - since putting an L-88 back to original condition is not an every day event! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Can't beat the look of those bare aluminum heads.

Intake is now too thick at the front and rear. 50 K will need to be shaved off to make the fit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

That news isn't all that bad...sounds like the heads/block have had material removed, which should bump the compression up closer to it's as advertised number and help performance. Cool! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif And if that's the case, the stock pushrods may be too long...just something to check.

After much sweat and 60K off of the front and rear bottoms of the intake it lines up- kinda..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

View from the other side. Job is literally a hand fit due to the head work that was completed previously. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

four of the intake manifold bolt holes are a no go at this stage and the manifold is a perfect fit on the heads at 60K.

Here is a good look at the misalignment..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

As they say there is a tool for every job. Gentle application needed here-very gentle.... Hole elongation - is now the only way out - or in this instance the only way to get the bolts in! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif Stay tuned.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Engine is back together. Significant delay due to the decision to move to a better set of 074 castings. A new set of heads were located and installed. These 074's were a vast improvement over the last set, but still required seperate helicoil installation in three areas to achieve proper bolt down torque. All three areas looked to have excellent thread condition, but failed when specified torque was applied.

Impressive looking piece of muscle. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
