My friend just recently bought a 1970 LS6 Chevelle and after he brought it home I noticed a sticker on the windshield that I have never seen before. I questioned him about it and he was stumped as well, so I am turning to ask the Chevelle guru's out there in the Chevy world. It is about 1/2 inch tall by 1 1/2 inch long and reads "SP". This car was delivered to the Chevy Eng. Center, Warren Mich. GM Proving Grounds according to the original build sheet, it also has a ton of options including power windows, and fiber optics. Any info on the sticker or if anybody knows anything about this car would be appreciated. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Whats the VIN# & Mileage.
The "SP" stumps me..Can you be sure of it's time period when applied?Meaning not put on in later 70's or 80's?
Could be a parking sticker for a specific lot someone worked at.Or a High School parking lot sticker.Just a guess,I'm not familiar with it.

I have seen a few of the GM Proving grounds Chevelles. To date I have 5 buildsheets stating this, and all are LS6's.
GM would pluk a few off different plant lines for quality control at that time and test them at the Warren Michigan,or Mesa AZ. facility. These were prrobably passed onto magazine editors to test for their issues as well.
Can you give color combo and more details on his Chevelle?
It may just be one of the LS6's tested in 1969 Motor Trend,HotRod,CarCraft Magazines, etc.

--------Production date on this LS6 as well as the others mr70 mentioned would be interesting.Would they all be early cars?Even pre-production?Or were they spread over the year? Were they all loaded? What transmissions?............Bill S

The sticker is in the bottom middle of the windshield, the only way to get it in that position would be either to take out the glass or maybe pull the dash pad, but that looks like it's stretching it. The car has never been apart, and has been sitting in this condition from the late 1970s. The color is Harvest Gold with a gold vinyl top, and saddle interior, it's an automatic car with 331 gears. More options inlcude tack and guage, tilt, rear window defogger, ashtray light, courtesy light, etc, it has a total of 41 options listed on the build sheet, and the VIN# is 136370K163470. When my buddy bought the car I thought it was probably a magazine car but I wasn't for sure.

Can you relay all the lines on the Cowl Tag?
Can you relay the Gold paint code number as well?
Any way you can post pix?
How far are you from St.Louis?
Thanks.
Rick

Hi..sounds like a nice car. One thing to keep in mind though..just because an item shows up along the bottom of the build sheet, doesn't make it an option. There are many items listed that are either part of an option, or were part of the base "SS" conversion. The lamps (ashtray, mirror, etc.) are good examples of this.

I know you can't go by how many lines on the build sheet there are because of the SS package, but I didn't have the build sheet in front of myself when I posted the message. I will be getting a copy of it tonight so I can answer all of the questions that I can. Everybody has been great so far with all the info that I have recieved and I am looking forward to more info in the future. Mark /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Rick, We are located about 20 miles south of St. Louis down I-55. The body tag is in great shape and can be easily read, plus the build sheet has all the same info as well. The color combination sounds kinda sick but that was the style back in the 70s. Where are you located in Ill.? Mark

I'm 20 miles West of Chicago.
I'm curious of the paint code. There were three regular production Gold colors available on the 1970 Chevelle.
Code#55-Champagne Gold
Code#58-Autumn Gold
Code#63-Desert Sand
But there were two Gold colors offerred on January 15,1970.The Documents say they were not available on the LS6,but true world expererience has disproven this.
Code#53-Nugget Gold
Code#62-Carmel Bronze
Does your car have any of these paint codes, either on the cowl tag,or Buildsheet?

Rick, This is not my car, I wish it was but it belongs to a good friend of mine. The paint code was 58 Autumn Gold. Thanks, Mark
