View Full Version : This doesn't just sound crazy...
it is crazy! I'm seriously considering having Lamar Walden take the A/C out of my ZL1 when he installs the 427 and other stuff. This car will never, ever be driven in bumper to bumper traffic. It will never be driven in bad weather and if I wanted to go to the beach in it I would chose early spring or fall when it's cool.
After all, ther original ZL1s didn't have A/C. Probably no power brakes or steering and electric windows were not even a thought at that time.
Of course I would save it along with the origninal motor, rear end, clutch etc.
Any thoughts?? Opinions? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Less strain on the engine. Electric water pump would work easier???

All the original 1969 Camaro ZL1s had power disk brakes. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I ran this idea by Lamar today and he said it's not a bad idea. Cleans up the engine bay and will allow him more latitude in fabricating the intake. He said something about having to find some early 1LE parts to make it look right. Maybe with the coil packs moved and no a/c it will look like there is a real engine in there! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Another positive point is the amount of weight you will be dropping...the entire concept of going fast is maximum HP and minimum weight, it would have been entertaining to see the look Fred Gibb would have had if someone had suggested A/C in one of the original ZL-1 cars. Electric waterpump is not only easier on the engine, but also makes more HP not having to turn one. The original ZL-1 and COPO cars were so weight conscious that most were stipped plain janers with no options. But, in the days of air ride Harleys with sound systems, I guess the hard tails and the guys who ride them are the ghosts from the past......

If I was in another part of the country I would say go for it. But you are in the South. A/C is a must for five months of the year. What would your wife say when an autospy report came back saying you passed out from heat exhuastion which caused you to crash and kill you and the 2 billion people on the Altanta interstates. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
It would be cool to see how much difference no a/c and electric water pump would make. You would want to replace the pump every couple of years though; you wouldn't want to be driving when it went out. Bye Bye motor if that happened.
More like 2 billion suicidal maniacs. And that is just one reason this car will see so few miles. Summer is a problem but the SS and Z06 will still have air. Also, nightime in Atlanta sometimes brings a cooling 85 degree breeze. Also, if we find a reliable electric water pump I doubt I could ever wear it out. To me this car will be fun to look at and to drive. So I have no problem leaving it on the lift for long periods of time.
