'70 LT-1 valve covers

Can anyone tell me what the "factory finish" looks like on these aluminum covers ? Whats the best way to achive that finish?
The covers I have are clean, but have an uneven look to the finish. Most photos don't show the finish very clear. Thanks !! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The original LT1 covers were not the nicely polished ones that GM currently sells/people modify today. They were just the muted aluminum finish, somewhat blotchy in some cases, not real pretty but...

I can only reply as to their use on a Camaro. In '69 the DZ 302 (Z/28 only) got them and they were not polished and didn't have drippers (drippers are tabs on the under side above each rocker so the splashed oil dripped on the rocker). In '70 the Z/28 was equipped with the LT1 and got the same covers with drippers and a polished finish. By aftermarket standards they are/were rather crudly finished with lots of casting marks etc. The polished version is still available for about $110 - $120 each in GM boxes.

M & D Thanks for the info. My '72 Z28 had them and I can't for the life of me remember what they looked like. I found a pair, cheap that needed some repair. I have experemented with a couple of different cleaners but the finish is still uneven in color. I may try media blasting them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif Well, They are done. They came out good. What I ended up doing was using an acid based wheel cleaner which turned the covers black ( don't try this at home )then "rubbed" them back up with some Fenton Wheel Brite. They look clean and "weathered"
