Last week I drove my new Phase III ZL1 (#34) from GMMGs in Marietta, GA to my home in upstate New York - a distance of 950 miles. The car was phenominal. It took 1 quart of oil and averaged 24.7mpg!!! The engine and tranny were great, but the most pleasant surprise was the handling and agility. This car has it all and it looks good too - silver with red stripes and red & black houndstooth interior. Please let me know how it compares with yours performance-wise and if there any "bugs" I should look for. Mike

awesome ride, most of the small items have been worked out as far as any bugs are concerned if you just now got yours! i had mine bumping 150 mph. and it was super smooth. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif
Mine is close to 1,000 miles now. You're absolutely right.....it is an awesome ride. Mine is a Phase II (would have liked to have had the Phase III but fortunate to have the Phase II). Have had no problems other than the check engine light which Matt sent simulators for (which cured that problem) and the left rear tire scraping on the inside of the fender (which Matt is to send new springs for). Other than those two minor problems, no other problems to report. Mine has used no oil so far......however I did change the oil at 750 miles.
Enjoy your new car Mike...........they are great.

I have had the GREAT OPPORTUNITY of driving a couple different Phase III 427 ZL-1's and the thing that most impresses me is going 60 MPH in 4th gear and putting your foot into it and the car LIFTING and setting you back in your seat. The suspension is really dialed in also.

Check engine light is the 1 problem I'm having. I have put a couple of quarts in her already.
The other is losing to a 99z28 spraying 150 shot. But at least I look good doing it.

Mike you got any pics. That is an unusual color combo.

And from a roll, too?! What "phase" is your car? Looks like you were pulling away until he sprayed you, but still a darn close run...nice vid!

Mike I envy you. What an awsome camaro ! I started to enter into a deal to buy a Phase III but didn't want to over extend myself. I have a z and a copo. Maybe I'll be able to buy one in the future.
What's the deal on the oil consumption ?

The difference is if you both would have kept going he couldn't have kept up with the NOS forever and your Car would have just kept pulling. You just let off too soon. You can always add NOS.

In defense of Mike's ZL-1, I'd probably say the rings are still seating. So, you can look for an improvement on that MPG figure!
But, as unfortunate as it may be, oil consumption seems to be a trend on a few of the new Chevrolets these days. Not necessarily all cars of a certain model, but here and there...I don't know if it was quality control issues, or just coincidence. Anyone else heard of any "oil burners"...(no, not diesels!)?

it actually was in 6th gear, but, alot of throttle left. if you fly in from chicago we can fly for 12 more miles not to exceed 255 miles as which are on the other #13 69 ZL1 camaro about to come out of the resto shop and be ready for th reunion! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Kevin, why is the 69 ZL-1 coming out of the resto shop, did something happen to it? That video of a 02 Phase III ZL-1 in some actual street action was awesome! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif
Cool video Dave ! ! ! !
Cool ride too.

Rob- its a phase 3. Got 800 miles on it. WOuld have loved to stretch it further, but running out of road was the stopping factor. He was in an auto. He made the jump ahead on my 2 to 3 shift.
Anyone else have the service engine light flashing?

the car was dinged beside the rear window near the top of the pillar between the rear window and the driver side small rear window and trunk decklid when i sold it and shipped it to its then owner before i bought it back. it was very difficult to match the paint as it seemed to be a slightly off from what cortez silver should be. it had a slight hint of blue. we tried to match 10 yr. old paint and said lets make it right. we were then going to paint the entire car, but decided to do it right disassemble and when we did it started a complete resto as you know what happens when you tear one down. i wanted this car done to perfection and decided to do a complete nut and bolt resto on it. with only 255 miles on her she deserved it! it will be at the reunion and the before and after are amazing for an already very nice previous resto.

Sounds great Kevin! I only saw that car one time outside of Randys garage, and I think it was 92 or 93 at a car at the North Wilkesboro speedway and it was hauled there, it had never been on a public road and not be in a trailer when Randy had it, at least not to my knowledge anyway, great car either way! Who is doing the resto? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
That video was awesome. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Those 99 Z-28s are pretty quick! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I wish mine would run like that. As for the oil consumption, I have found out on the CamaroZ28.com message boards(ls1 tech) that the 98-99 LS-1s were worse about oil consumption than the 00-02s because in the new ones they used LS6 rings. What type of rings did they use in the ZL1s? What type of exhaust system is on the ZL1? Is it the the chambered type that gmmg makes with longtube headers? Because it sounds a lot better than the flowmaster american thunder system on my car!

They use the long tube Headers with the Chambered. Part of the Oil consumption problem might just be that the Rings have not seated. Mobil One is not gonna help to seat the Rings. I just put Non Synthetic in to hopefully seat the Rings. Even the Oil usage is a Welcome Tradeoff for all the Power it makes. It is really a Blast to Drive. The is a New Yellow One on Ebay right now that is still a Phase 1.

I'll have to try from a dead roll, but his was an auto. My SS has been beaten by less hp cars and autos due to it being a stick. I would imagine it to be the same way in the ZL1.

This is car 65 reporting: Piloted by none other than Capt. Carl! Speaking personally I also have used some oil, about 1 quart, I LEAK NO fluids! My underbody is DRY! Did have some tire rub.......... Other than that, I am finer than FROGS HAIR! I will be on display this week at Bob Brown Chevrolet in Des Moines Iowa. I now have about 475miles on me and I keep getting better with age!
All kidding aside, this car is AWESOME! What more can you say! I just wish my YENKOS had all the moderns creature features this ZL-1 does! I am excited to get both ZL-1's to the Monmouth, Il Cruise and Fred Gibb Show! August 1 and 2! My hat off to Matt Murphy and GMMG! A JOB WELL DONE! I can live with some oil burn for all the brutal HORSEPOWER I have at my disposal! I have NO regrets buying this CAMARO! See you in Monmouth!

Had the "GROUND POUNDER" out again this morning before it goes to Des Moines, Iowa for a Display at Bob Brown Chevrolet this next week.
Racing thru the gears, squealing the tires, smoking the tires, Stereo cranked to the hilt with KISS, Beach Boys, Otis Redding, and yes even Marilyn Manson!
Nothing like leaving a light with the tires squealing, back end going sideways on you, music cranked the header dump switch wide open and giving it HELL! I did so well today even SHELBY complimented me on my shifting! This BEAST just keeps getting better and better. I have NO IDEA how Dennis Barker and GMMG are going to top this!
See you in Monmouth and Fred Gibb on August 1 and 2

A stick car should OWN an auto car from a roll, and an auto car should walk a stick off the line. The auto's advantage is when launched from a stand still, as the stick will pull an auto on the big end every time. I'm gonna guess your car is a Phase I?

Chevy454 Actually mine is the one that was on Hot Rod TV and Presently Posted at YearONe.com under Brazetlon Bash Grand Opening. Phase 3 Daytona Yellow fiskes (I think only the P3 had hockey strips) Yellow houndstooth.
Dyno here in Mobile today. Put it on around 10 central time. Terrible numbers. 459 rwhp and 445 rwtq. Not sure what is going on. The folks seem to think cuz it was hot, around 80 but closer to 100 in the shop. I got a dynolab graph showing 509 and 501. Seems to be to much of a fall for just temperature variances. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif And on top of that a pespi can exploded in the car (tells ya how hot it was outside, imagine how hot it was in the little shop.
Car feels strong, getting okay gas milage, and throwing lots of codes.

Is that now Yellow and Brown Houndstooth ? The #'s suck. I hope it was just the Heat. What are the codes ?

Hello Rob: Chevy has had a number of problems with excessive oil comsumption. The 2001 LS6 engine created many complaints. What made it difficult to figure out was that some Corvettes were fine and others were using too much oil. They actually bought some cars back from the dealers that were using too much oil. When they tested the cars they could not duplicate the oil comsumption problems. To better understand the situation they got detailed reports from the owners on HOW they drove their Corvettes. Only then was it determined that some owners liked to drive the cars hard at high sustained revs in town and NEVER shift out of first gear. It was thought that this put an unusual load on the engine and caused the rings to flutter resulting in excessive oil consumption! The LS6 for 2002 has a new ring design that has proven to be more effective in this regard. Still a difficult situation for some '01 owners who don't want the local dealer opening up the engine on their $50,000 dollar Corvette!

No, I saved the seats; mostly on the floormats. It did get the headliner and rear window. WOuld have been cool to see in someone elses car.
I got to look into the codes.
82z96ss,
First let me say --Very nice car!
I would also do what Charley asked--check your codes
I was listening to your run --when you first took off car pulled hard and it sounded like you went right up to red line and hit it just right you were ahead at this pt. but it didn't sound like you went to redline on the next shift it sounded like you shifted out a little early and the rpm's dropped a little out of power range--you were along side of each other maybe as he juiced it you saw him thru the corner of your eye creeping up, and you shifted a bit early ,instead of bringing her to peak, so your next shift wouldn't have had to struggle to recover--if so I think you would have held him off---Like I said very nice car--just giving some input for the next time and just an observation---JoeG /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Thanks for the suggestion Joe, but tell you the truth I shifted right were I wanted too. BUT I didn't realize until at the dyno today were my rev limiter is. I shifted around 6200 but now I know I still had 300 or 400 rpm left in her.
Man, wish I could do a rematch, but losers always want the rematch. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
I thought 6200 was high. WOW was I wrong. I'll get em next time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

82z96ss:
At what RPM did the car hit peak HP at? Also, what did it look like right above/below the peak? The reason I ask is, that I was shifting our car at it's HP peak, until Pete suggested I spin it a little tighter. I did, and it went quicker. So, I shift about 500 rpm PAST the peak. BUT, my peak was fairly "flat" for a peak, as I was within 10hp of my peak (425hp) for several hundred rpm's. I peaked at 5800, but shift at 6300 when it nosedives, and it goes quicker. Might be something to look into...
I think the codes are definitely something I'd look into if I were you. Before you posted your dyno #s, I was gonna guess the RWHP of the Z-28 on spray you ran at around 425rwhp, assuming he has the usual free mods and probably a couple of other add ons. Then, your dyno confirmed that I wasn't too far off, since you 2 ran so close. I'm not an expert on the '02 ZL-1s, but I'm gonna guess your Phase III should be in the 500rwhp neighborhood...? Charley?

Good info, Charles. It seems I've heard more about oil consumption problems on the 8100 also...and the usual "gas consumption" problem that comes with a big block!
