View Full Version : BELMONT What they ordered for 1969

The word was quietly circulated that there were special hi-performance Camaro and Chevelle models available. Belmont ordered 10 COPO Camaro models and 5 COPO Chevelle models. These cars had few options as it was felt that they would see some "track time" and should be as light as possible. Many did not have the console option. Deliveries started in the spring. The first car to arrive was a Hugger Orange Camaro with a manual transmission. It was driven some to break in the engine (maybe the Harveys on Jane Street?) and then it was run at the track to determine it's potential. There were two or three other customer cars ordered at Belmont including the Gold with a Green interior example. The motor in that car was replaced with a 454 early on. The 427 did tend to eat parts when it was raced... At first GM honoured the warranty on these cars but then tightened things up later.

Charles,
You have access to a lot of interesting and informative material ---were you possibly involved at one point with any of these occurrences --whatever--very informative--- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif-----JoeG

Beare Motors, in Port Perry, sold three COPO Chevelles. I understand that the orange one was brought in from Belmont. The other two came from the factory.

I owned the Dec. 2002 feature COPO for approx. 12 to 14 yrs. It is nice to see that it's good hands, in good condition and most importantly it still has the "CE" block.

Thanks white Z. Any interesting racing stories or vintage pictures? Rallye Green has slowly, but surely become my favorite car color. I will email you a few current day pictures. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Lance Hill raced that car and I believe he went on racing Pro Stock into the '70s. Belmont and Gorries seemed to know what a drag strip was. During one of the early '70s CanAm weenends at Mosport, a UOP Shadow made its home at Nurse Chev-Olds in Whitby. Most dealers around here had no interest what so ever. A friend couldn't dig up any GM sponsors and ended up racing a Dodge. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

There was a used car lot in Vancouver at Broadway and Fraser named Belmont Motors. They were heavily into high performance cars, and had an incredible selection of almost new Chevrolet performance cars. These things would come in by car carrier on a regular basis. I lived close by and remember being there one day as they unloaded 4 427 69 Biscaynes. I always wondered where they got their stuff, but now I'm thinking that they were affiliated with Belmont in Ontario.
I was very young at the time and drove my car in there to see about trading into something faster. A salesman had approached me at a gas station and told me they wanted my car. Very flattering. So I drove in and boy were they ever high pressure. They offered me almost nothing for my car and wanted huge money for their car. I tried to escape but they had my keys and had blocked me in. It took almost 2 hours to get away from them after threatening to call the police. Needless to say I never went back. Even today, I only go to car lots after they're closed to look at the inventory. You might say I'm scarred for life. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When i moved to vancouver in July 1975 Belmont was still in business at Broadway and Fraser. They had the black and white checkered parking lot full of muscle cars-all used ones. It was very common in the for used car dealers in Vancouver to buy wholesale in Ontairo and Quebec and bring cars here. Our nicer climate ment that cars sold new here lasted longer that the salt laden stuff from "back east".
Belmont was still high pressure in 1975. Every close was "sit down and fill out a credit app". $99 down and $99 a month-they never told you how many months. I recall looking at a 70 442 convert there in the fall of 75. the asking price was around $2200,but with their easy finace program the car would cost $3700 over three years. I was able to walk off the lot.

Hi Jeff; I do vaguely remember you, but I think you were pretty young at the time. I'm told you have a couple of nice Camaros. I think your uncle sent me some photos last year. They're somewhere in this computer. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I have a cousin in England who was an investment banker, living in Bournemouth. He took stress leave, but then he didn't have COPO Camaros to play with either. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Wow.That shot of Lance's car brings back a lot of memorys.I hung around with Rick Eaton of Golden Mile Chev and he was a close friend of Lances.Rick had similar Camaro that they ran in Super Stock.Back then high stall converters were not fully developed,so get the cars off the line they would do a spin wheel start. With the line loc on and sticky Atlas Buecrons on the front the car would sit with the rear tires spinning at say 5000.When the lights finally came down all they did was let go of the line loc button and stab it.It sure was hard on the starting line considering a lot of tracks didn't have cement.I ended up buying a hugger orange COPO Camaro that originaly came from Golden Mile.My first car was a 1969 Camaro 350-300 4 speed from Belmont that was a demo owned by Dave Mackay.Great times.

When the COPO business started a rep from Belmont Chevrolet had to go to the head office for GM in Oshawa. There he placed an order for 10 COPO models. This was the minimum number you could order. Following the first order of COPO cars the orders were simply placed through normal channels at the dealership.
