Anyone know what color the heater box above the passenger feet is? Is it black or gray or phosphate or what? 1970 chevelle?

Jim,

Mine is Black; probably around an 80% gloss. Not a real good shot, but maybe this will help.

Dennis,

I think he's inquiring about the part that mounts on the inside of the firewall /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif Probably called an 'air diffuser' or some technical name like that.

Jim,
The box has a slightly textured flatter black look to them. On survivor cars I have seen it is very dull and slightly textured almost like a 'dry' spray. That is how I restore them.

With regards to the firewall side, I think they are originally even glossier than 80%. On low mileage cars, flip the cover over and you can see that they are very gloss, closer to 90-95%.

Agree Rick, the Novas are the same way - dry, dull textured black on the inside box, glossy on the engine side - probably the glossiest black part under the hood!

Oops, my mistake. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif You're right about the "textured" finish on the inside piece. I probably have a shot of that too, and will get it to you soon. Sorry for the screw-up.

So your saying a flat black on the inside on the defusser and a 90-95% black that's on the heater box? The same gloss level that is on the firewall? Anyone recommend a paint in a can for the defusser? Thanks for the info guys. This is why I love the internet.

JIM

By the way ORIGLS6, the pics look great!

I'm not sure that the firewalls were 90% gloss, at least in the Novas. The Novas were more around 60%, maybe less.

SInce we are on the topic. The steering column is also out. I would really like to repaint the column from years for key wear around the ignition switch. I'm ready to paint but am wondering about the right paint to use in a spray can. Whom has had a good experience? ANd what spray paint in a can did you use?????

What Marlin said. There is a distinct difference in gloss level as well as the color of black between the firewall and the outside heater box. Firewalls are much duller and have nowhere near as much or as thorough of coverage.

For the inside box if you are using a spray bomb, try Rust Oleom's Flat Black. Spray on a good coat and then put a couple of 'dry spray' coats on it for the slight texture.

Thanks for the nice picture. That is what I was looking for. Sorry it took so long to reply. As you can guess, it still isn't painted yet.
