View Full Version : Drag radials for the reunion

Planning on racing at the upcoming reunion...
I just cant seem to make the polyglas tires work, a 4-spd and 4.88's dont help. So I was thinking about grabbing some drag radials. Should be much better than polyglas - but I am now debating if I should just get slicks and hope I dont break anything. BTW, thinking 275/60-15 Nitto 555R's on Cragar 15x8 (4.5 in backspace). I believe the tire is 28 inches tall - should work nicely with the 4.88's.
If you guys have any oppinions or experiences let me know.
I better decide soon... THANKS /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

...but Pete does! Grab your back issues of MCR (from '98 I think?) and look at the shootout they did with Pete's 3 COPO cars. They all switched to Drag Radials and I know the Camaro got some MONSTERS on it.
Also, Dru Deisner, I believe, runs Drag Radials on his Yenko Camaro...I'll see if I can dig up an email addy.
Just in case you're wondering, my vote is for the Polys, just for the challenge factor and lesser chance of breaking anything, BUT an L-88/4speed/4.88 car THAT CAN HOOK should be a blast.../ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
Mark, like Rob, i would love to see the car launch with a good set of slicks, but would lean towards polyglas, simply to minimize the chance of breakage. What ever you decide, I applaud you for giving us the opportunity to see this rare car in action. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

run the car on the street tires!!!!! no water box!!!! plenty of grip on the track! stay out of the water drive around the box !!!!!! (also keep the front /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.giftires out too!!!
TOM/ROB--make a good point on tires----488's dig in like a back-hoe with slicks on.----- I'm just sentimental about Motion cars.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif
Hi AL,
I'm only refering to some give on launch, not going down the 1/4 fishtailing.I'd would guess the drag radials are a good compromise between polys and slicks. And it all depends how high the rpms are coming off the line.--------- Parts break on a car when they feel like.

You know, Mark, it may not be *that bad* of a thing to run the Nittos on there...I'd forgotten, but JJ was the shoe behind the Nova and Chevelle when they tested Pete's cars, and I'll guarantee you no one could drive them any harder than JJ! You can attest to that! Of course, the Chevelle did suffer from a broken axle tube, but Pete thought was on it's way out before the day at the track, but the Nova lived!
I say GO FOR IT!!!!

Try a set of the BF Goodrich drag radials, they BITE very well and not too much.I have a friend that has a set on his 55 chevy and he has a 750 H P engine with the Richmond 6 speed and it hooks really good and he has not broken anything yet.He drives the 55 like a maniac most of the time and the tires are holding up very well.

The BF's hook good. My white car actually lifts the left front wheel with them. See if you can find a set from someone to trial fit. The 275/60 is a BIG tire. It on a corvette rally wheel just fit in my 69 and would just scrubb when you turned a corner. You might be alright in a 68 car with the rounded wheel well.
There are some cars running 11's and low 12's on Poly's though..................

There's a kid in town that runs the Nittos on his '02 SS, and he likes his Nittos. 1.7 short times, launching off the rev limiter (6200)...he's ran a best of 12.49@106 in good air, with only a couple of minor mods (tires, 4.10s, lid, free mods). I know all the late model guys swear by the Nittos.

Joe G, I understand where your coming from. I was meaning the loss of traction vs. traction ( most street stock equipment failure occurs when guys think they are JOHN FORCE out of the bleach box and hit the dry pad) slip grab thing!!!SNAP!!! GOES AN AXLE OR STOCK WHEEL STUD!! If you have a "no slop" drivetrain in a supercar or any factory muscle car. it can take a set of slicks. H.P. is not a factor fatigue possibly!! as far as NITTOS go yes they are traction friendly for sure but do they look period correct? I have not seen any yet

How far is the track from the hotel? Will everyone be trailering? I am going to run the Polyglas since mine is a SMALL BLOCK. Any thoughts on tire pressure? Planning on 18lbs rear and 32lbs front. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif Hope to have new exhaust system in time. Tom said fuel is available at the track. Leaving 2 weeks from today, stopping in Spokane the 23rd for the Inland Empire Camaro Club show. Not TOO excited!!! Will be bringing some good NW microbrew! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gifJim

OK guys I am working on that request......how is the best way to do that......msn messenger or other?????......give me some help and I will see what I can do......I think I have access to a laptop that is on msn so we shouldn't have any long distance charges.....

How far is the track from the hotel? As the crow flies, probably within a mile, but little further to drive...simple to get to/from both places.
Will everyone be trailering? Don't know, as I'd say it depends when most get there, and if they want their tools and such there. A lot of times, the guys will get teh cars out Thursday evening, so those cars may drive over Friday morning. I'd say the majority will drive back from the track...I know we will, unless we break something!
I am going to run the Polyglas since mine is a SMALL BLOCK. Any thoughts on tire pressure? Planning on 18lbs rear and 32lbs front. Well, that pressure would make for a good show, but won't be worth a SQUAT for traction. The Polys seem to do best with 40+ in the rear and the same in the front. Our Camaro likes 46psi is at 46psi all the way around, but pump 'em up, put down some marks, and check 'em.
For those wondering, we'll have our trailer on hand with a generator, compressor, welder, jacks, jack stands, and lots of tools. We'll also have a fuel jug, as they won't pump into your car.

MSN Messenger *might* be the way to go. I'm not sure if there is a limit to the amount of contacts that can be connected at one time, but you could essentially have a chat room with a web cam...just keep adding people to the convo until it says stop! What kind of quality can we look for, and will it pick up anything from that kind of distance?
Denis, you ever done anything like this?

I will be bringing my laptop to the reunion and have MSN access on it. I may even have a cellular internet connection (still working on that). I will be there for the drag racing and would be more than happy to let you use it.

Mark,
Bring Both the Poly Glasses and Drag Radials. It is my opinion that you will not be able to hook your Motion Phase III Camaro under full power, untill most of the way through second gear with stock style tires.
Assuming a good state of tune your car is probably making approx. 100hp and much more torque over stock at the rear wheels.

Steve
do you have a web cam?
Kloneco,
Al,--- not looking to beat this tire thing to death---your correct, in having a tight drivetrain and suspension will aid in avoiding breakage with a solid hook-up---I'm just looking thru the eyes of someone who sees a fella willing to share a Great Motion car by racing it, and I like you and everyone else don't want to see him have any unnecesary problems.----And in the end it's up to him---his car.-- No big deal : Wish I could be there to see him run /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
I also second budnate and Jeffs request /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Sorry, never got into the chat/video thing. I'll have to ask my kids.
Keep in mind I'm missing the reunion, again, this year. Wife booked a family cruise 2 years ago that returns to port in Miami on Saturday the 30th. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I will have a laptop and fulltime LAN-Internet connection shipboard so might be able to work something out. Stay tuned.

Hey Mark...
I hadn't thought about it until a conversation with Mo yesterday, but are you gonna try and run drag radials on the back with bias plys on the front?!
I've never tried it, but have been told that radials on back with bias tires up front is a BAD combo.

should i hook up some traction bars to break the tie down straps in my trailer, i'm afraid it will hook up and go throught the front of the trailer. (#13 ZL1 coming off fresh frame off rotisserie restoration)! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Rob, I just bought some BF Goodrich Comp T/A Drag Radials and yes I was going to leave the front tires alone. I was planning on racing like that. What will it hurt?? Mark /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I'm not sure how the drag radials react, but I've always heard bias on front & radials on the rear was a bad idea. It may not be a problem, just thinking out loud...
Pete would know more than I, as he has ran the drag radials before.

You won't have any problem with the radials on the back and bias on the front..... especially with the front tires off the ground!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Pete, GET DOWN HERE AND RACE this Car for ME!!!! I took it out the other night and got on it and it was alittle scary... I don't have any driving experience with this car as I have Only driven it (3) times. Will the drag radials bog if I just Floor it or will I have to Rev it up alittle. How should I take off?? IF You have 488's in her--you'll have to put about 6/100lb bags of sand in the trunk to bog her-------/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

If you're looking for a driver i'll be the first in line....if you are taking passengers where do i buy a ticket?!!!... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif
Mark, I'm sure it would be neat to see a high caliber driver take the car for a blast and turn a good E.T., but I'd give you a lot more credit for doing it yourself.
I don't think you'll have to worry about bogging the car, but you may have to have the R's around 2,500~3000 if you are running a radial. Without slicks, you will not have to worry about breaking unless you start leaving the gate at the same RPM you shift at.
If you need any support in the pits, I'll be there ready to help anyone who needs it.
Cheers to you!
Paul Tholey
Make sure everything is tight like the traction arm U bolts or it can torque steer you into the other lane. Empty parking lot with nothing to run into is good to practice and experiment with different rpm starts. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Carefull what you ask for /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I think I would try it at about 1500 rpm and just mash it. Trial and error will be the game. Put 14 lbs of air in the back and do a decent burnout. If it bogs, just keep uping your rpm launch by 500 rpm till it looses traction. Then back it off in 200 rpm incriments. There is a sweet spot, you just have to find it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif
mhassett,
What everyone is telling you, especially Pete,is good info--if you only drove this car several times, lot of car, make your first run a seat of the pants run, don't worry about times, speed,-- just get a feel of the car going thru the gears-----Then you shouldn't have any surprises--unless you see a kid on a bicycle pass you by /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Mark, slow down, take a deep breath. You wil be fine. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif
Now, about your car. I know you do not want to embarrass either yourself or the car. I totally understand. But, YOU need to be the one behind the wheel. Period. That is what the reunion is all about. The SCR going to the track was never about ETs, MPHs, who beat who, etc. Yes, at times these things are brought up, but in a friendly way. Going to the track is basiclly about two things. One, allowing supercar owners a chance to enjoy their cars in the safest enviroment possible, and two, to allow the pubic a chance to see the cars doing what they were designed to do. Everything else is secondary. Bring the car, with whatever tire you decided to run, take it down the track, and most of all, HAVE FUN. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif
