View Full Version : So what's a 1970 RS/SS 396 L78 w/docs worth?

I was just talking to somebody that found an original owner RS/SS L78 car. It will need some restoring, engine rebuild and a repaint to bring it up to snuff. But almost everything is there. Is this a $15K, 20K, 25K, 30K, 35K car in this condition? What's it worth restored? 45K?

If it is a legit car, in mint condition it could be worth about $38-40k. I have only seen 3 of these cars for sale and all 3 were all up there high 30's (restored fully). An original unrestored car, one owner with docs, is hard to come by. Far and few between. You never find cars like this so putting a price on one maybe tough.

If it is documented as being one of the 600 produced,it could bring much more.
Which Transmission does it have?

4 speed, not sure which one though. Price will probably be somewhere in the $20-30K range. And it is #'s matching with p-o-p and probably more paperwork.

According to GM all 600 were 4 speeds, but a guy that Charley Lillard knows has an auto and says he has a buildsheet to prove it. As of yet, the buildsheet has not been posted to the web for anyone to look at it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I have received many pictures of the above car which I cant attach because file are too big. Mike (THUNDER above) and I both already own 70 L-78 Camaros, but were persuing this car because of its R/S option, Deluxe Interior, and paperwork. After looking at pictures of extensive "surface" rust the car at the very least needs TOTAL restoration. Its already been repainted an incorrect shade of Gold previously. No way to know what if any rust damage this repaint might be hiding. Car also needs dash pad, misc rechroming, misc interior resto, smog equip, etc etc. The market price on RESTORED 70 L-78 Camaros is really non existant as so few restored cars exist and thus turn over. Most of the 70 L-78's like mine are still unrestored survivors or missing original drivetrain obviously devaluing any resto......Seattle Sam just bought a restored 70 Camaro L-78 that Ive yet to see.
Anyway this above mentioned 70 L-78 is being offered for $30K or maybe less, but car needs alot PLUS PAINT so you figure the bottom line and I'm sure you'd currently be upside down, but who knows down the road what it would be worth. Having one myself I hope the value goes straight UP!!!! Chuck S/Seattle

Chuck,

Is the car in Autumn Gold? You said the shade is incorrect but could you please send me a picture or few?

I got the pictures of the car as well and it would need a complete restoration. Almost all of the important stuff is there for the L78. I thought from looking at the pictures that the interior looked like it was Sandalwood custom vinyl, but the trim tag shows the 727 code for Saddle custom vinyl. The car apparently sat on the lot for over a year before being purchase late in 71, so I wonder if there was any chance the dealer swapped out the interior to make the sale.

Here's the interior. I have not received any body shots, although they are requested.

And here is the cowl tag....L78 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Looks a little crusty around the tag though....
