1969 RS/SS Originality question

This is far from Supercar content, but a little input would be appreciated.

I have located a HB-code, 388 casting 300hp 350 for my 69 RS/SS project. Casting date is off the mark but the engine is complete with heads, sans intake/exhaust manifolds and accessories. Supposedly ran fine before being pulled. Asking price is $800. Is a $500 offer out of line, or am I the idiot for spending half a grand on a 350 that isn't nearly correct for my car?

Well, since a real DZ 302 engine adds value to a real Z28 that is missing it's original engine, I would think a correct 350/300 engine would add value to an SS350. I bet half the people selling Camaros on Ebay would call that matching #'s. Personally, I would grab the engine since it's the correct codes.

I would say $500 is a good price for an HB engine. I payed $250 for a HA block (nothing else, but correct date codes for my car). And I had to have the whole block glassbeaded, bored, linebored and new caps to get it in shape.

Well I would say that the guy is not giving it away. What you have to look at is that you have a block,crank,rods and a set of heads, all will need work. After you spend about $3000 more you will still have the wrong date code for your car. Cranks, rods, and heads etc. are easy for that car. The dated block is the tuff part. I would find a dated block and then spend the same money. It is worth doing this to you RS/SS. Very nice cars! Good luck! I too would probably wait for one that is within the date range. Like Sam said, you will be spending good money after bad, and in the end you will not have the proper block.
