What the heck, did GM ever put an LS-7 into a chevelle? I thought the highest performance motor was the LS-6? Anyway, check this out on ebay.

LS7 was a crate motor only available over the counter.. GM never put one in a production car. But Motion Performance did. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

sorry the link didn't work, hopefully this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2435990770&category=34 202) does

anyway, 3000 bucks for a grimy old crate? You can buy a brand new motor for that that's probably got more ponies.

Seems I remember a discussion on this board about a 70 LS7 Chevelle with some fiberglass body parts that was a prototype car that had been delivered through a dealer in Detroit. I remember something about the car having been parted out. OlRedAlert, were you not involved in this discussion? Anyone remember this thread? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Assuming it's a legit LS-7, that seems like a pretty good deal to me. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif I would think you'd be hard pressed to build something for under $3k that is gonna put out AT LEAST 550hp like that LS7. What crate engine could you buy for $3k that would put out more than that?

I agree Rob, a good LS-7 for 3k is a deal, but the more you read the description, the more i wonder if it's any good... "Before using this I would completely go through it, check clearances, replace bearings, seals, and gaskets. This item is sold as is with no warranty or returns" Sounds like he may know more about it than he's telling? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Very true. But, that's a good idea with just about any engine buy. We learned that lesson the hard way on an L-72...

Yountto did you see the car you mentioned in person? Is it still alive? I would love to hear about that car. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Dont know if this questions been asked but is it safe to assume all LS 7's are stamped CE on the pad or how did they did they handle that? Just wondered /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

No, I believe they were stamped "XCH" or something like that.

Didn't the LS7 have 077 aluminum heads? The one I bought from Indy a few years ago had 077 heads and
a lowrise aluminum intake, 596 I think.
The one in the add looks to have rusted iron heads, and I don't even see the usual SQ port hump on the
front of the heads.

I think they came with cast iron heads. But, I'm not sure if they used the LS-6's 291s or the later service replacement open chamber "188" heads. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

69L72RS,
I flipped thru one of my 70-71 engine books and it does say the LS-7 had aluminum/semi-hemi heads and a low-riser aluminum manifold. The title of the article is " The L/88 that can be lived with in the street".---JoeG

Came across the LS-7 head part # 3946072 ---1969 design

I asked the seller about the head issue, he replied that they could come both ways, alumunum or iron. I had always thought they had aluminum heads, I would do homework about this issue before I laid down the $$$$$ for this engine.

Kloneco,
Was the aluminum head still available then or did GM just offer the iron block on the later LS-7.--JoeG
