NICB question

Has anyone run their VIN with NICB and received a "no record found" response? I've owned my car for 13 years and probably about 10 years ago a friend ran the VIN and that's what I got back. Any guess what it means? The car is an original California car. Thanks.

I had A NICB search on one of mine once and the only information returned was that the car had been stolen and returned on the same day. No dealer info, no nothing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

It is fairly common for an NICB search to come back that no record was found. Sometimes you can chalk it up to a clerk to lazy to search, but sometimes given the sheer volume of cars, the records were lost over the years. The older cars are on microfische and more difficult to look up.

NICB keeps records related to insurance claims and thefts. They also have the shipping records on most (but not all) cars, but if a VIN check is called in on an older car, and there is no insurance claim or theft history, they will report that there is no record on that vehicle/VIN. On the older cars, as COPO said, they have to look up shipping records on microfilm, which they would not normally do unless requested by the person seeking the information. Other than collector's curiosity, there is no legitimate reason for anyone needing shipping records for a 30+ year old car, and NICB isn't in the historical records business.

When a newer vehicle is checked for any claim history, the shipping records automatically come up on their computer, so no extra microfilm search is required.

That would explain why the only history on my car is A theft and recovery. Were all cars placed in this database or would other contributing factors cause no information to be found? What about A car being purchased from the dealer with cash or never being registered and did insurance play A role in the NICB database? Some states did not require you to carry insurance on vehicles until recent years (as in the case here in Alabama).

COPO: I just contacted the NICB about the faked cars that are passed off as the real deals and fully insured and this was there response...( NICB has been receiving vehicle shipping & assembly records since the early 1960s and it is my understanding we are the only keeper of these older records. They are provided by the vehicle manufacturers at no cost to NICB with the understanding we will share them at no cost with the law enforcement community for investigative purposes. The information provided with these records, which is predicated on the vehicle identification number (VIN) includes the VIN and the original assigned dealership. A few manufacturers provide additional information such as vehicle color, engine, transmission, and other part numbers.



We are exploring the possibility of providing limited information to the general public for a small fee. This is an area we have discussed in the past and for various reasons elected not to pursue.Thank you for your interest in the NICB web site.) That was from the horses mouth. I still gave them my VIN to see if anything else is out there on my BB rag, I will post any responses from them for all members to see.

Thanks Steve, that explains it. I guess I'll have to wait for NICB to provide the information that they have to the public. I'm looking for the original dealer for my car and of course anything else that they can give me. Martin

please tell me how to get an NICB report, i've tried, do you have to know someone?

Don't hold your breath on the NICB...the NCRS thought we had them convinced to release the info a few years ago and they backed out.

You need law enforcement or PI help to obtain a report now...
