View Full Version : Super Car Responsibility

Being new to this forum, I dont know if this subject has been touched upon.
As being the owner of a Super Car should you feel a certain responsibility to the collecting car community and yourself to make sure this car is brought back to Day One condition and to show this car at several events each year?
If so, What about the guy that got that Yenko on Ebay a couple weeks ago. Would it be fair for him to just sit it in his garage until he can muster the 100k or so to bring it back, or should he sell it to someone who can. Maybe he could never take on that venture because of costs. How about the guy with the original drive train, should he sell it to him or vice versa, maybe they could be partners, but there is still a huge road ahead and lots of money. Not trying to offend the owner of that car, this is just an example. Back to the original question, How much responsibility comes with a Super Car? Anyone?

Being the owner of several supercars, my personal opinion is I'll do with them as I see fit. Like the owner in WI with the Yenko rotting in his yard, I don't agree with him, however, I do respect his right to make his own decisions of what to do with his property. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I can probably agree with what COPO said. I'm sure people think we're just as crazy at that guy in WI when they hear of us racing our cars regularly. But, that's our prerogative.

Funny story...I had some friends over for Thanksgiving and we were watching a tape from our last trip to Memphis this past fall. As I was staging, the microphone caught some guys in the background talking about how if they had that car [our Camaro] they wouldn't be racing it, but have it locked up or something. No sooner had they got that out of there mouths when I went through the traps and the "[email protected]" flashed up on the clocks. The mic then caught a whole monologue of expletives as they talk about how fast that "yellow car" was! Hearing that right there made it worth rolling in at 6am...

It's your car to do what you please with it. I'm not restoring my JL8 back to 100% stock original because I find it a little boring. I'm adding the crossram, fiberglass crossram hood, Stahl roadrace headers, Minilite wheels, heater delete, radio delete, transistor ignition. I'm doing this because I want people to see what you could have bought in 1969 and gone out road racing with. These mods are easy to put back to stock so it's not too big of a deal. That Yenko on Ebay will take a lot of time, money and parts to be put back to stock. The buyer bought the car because he wanted something to go racing with so I don't see why he would want to put it back to stock right now.

ps - Sammy, where are you at on LBI and where do you keep your car? My 69 Z28 JL8 car is also Hugger Orange with white stripes

Hey Jeff,
I moved off the Island to West Creek on the mainland a while ago,Built an 80 foot 2 story garage just for the car /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I still have a building on the causeway in ship bottom where I run my company out of. Are you the same jeff I talked to about the ZL-1 motor from the chevy dealership?

No, I don't think that was me. But my memory is pretty shaky anymore, so who knows. My brother and I still go down to Beach Haven for vacation every year. If I didn't have this JL8 car, I would probably have a beach house down there.

by a stroke of luck without paying lots of $$$ for it when i got my zl1. i didn't put it all back original (headers, traction bars, tach,) i pretty much left it the way i got it i did paint it back to the original color and it does look good with the orignal wheels and caps but i do have mags for it and it can be put back to its original self i don't race it unless someone pulls up next to me wanting to /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif its hard to not punch it out and what a ride too maybe someday i'll sell it if my son is not intersted in it but till then Im gonna drive and show it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif i've heard guys in the back ground saying i wouldn't rev that car up like that and i say whats the fun in it if i wanted art i'd paint a picture and hang it on the wall /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I don't think you guys are crazy at all for racing those cars, isn't that what they are supposed to do! I was at Randy Millers garage one time and I asked him how he could just let all that stuff sit there, I told I would drive myself crazy just trying to figure out which car to burn the road up with that day, he just laughed, there would be no way I could let those cars just sit! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Long time viewer fist time posting. I feel that a person that spends there hard earned money on a car has the wright to treat it as they wish. If a person is searching for that low E.T. or if the car is simply not driven I respect both, after all it is up to the individual on how they get injoyment from there car... With that said, seeing a car that maybe someone else would love to own decay in to the earth is kinda hard on the soul. We have all seen it.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

You would have to sell 3 or 4 ZL-1's to get a beach house on this Island right now...wow the prices have skyrocketed worse than a Yenko....Good for me though, Im selling some property I have here and it will give me the green backs to buy a couple Yenko's to tow around the ZL-1's I can now afford /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Rob,
When I met you and saw your Yenko at Stanton last summer my first impression was of a truly nice restored Yenko example. When you launched at the lights(which I took a photo), thats when I truly apprieciated your car for what it was meant to be, and also felt respect for it's owner for keeping it free to carry on the heritage that Don envisioned for your car to begin with. If the car could talk we all know what it would choose if the choice was provided to either sit indoors to be enjoyed from a visual sense, or launched at the lights to excite all the senses, not only for the owner, but also for the many people who may never be fortunate enough to own one. For those multitudes of the general population, they live the Supercar dream because of the opportunity to see these cars in action, which is only possible from those owners willing to display these cars as they should be, ripping up the blacktop. Watching a Supercar as yours at the drags is the ultimate tribute to Don Yenko, one more piece in the puzzle of keeping his vision alive. Cheers to the owners who allow these cars the opportunity to spend some time in the environment they were raised in. As well as constant care, I feel there is a responsibility to keep the history alive....11 seconds at a time. Just my opinion.
