Hey Guys,
I am going to start "day 2-ing" my 1970 Camaro. I just purchased 15x7 Keystone Classics with big BFG T/A's. Also, Headman Headers are in the mail. I did a search for some "day 2" pictures but I was not to impressed with the results. I was hoping maybe we could put together some pictures of the ultimate "day 2" cars. Don't hate me because I want pictures!

PS - Where can I find some vintage decals for the car?

I really feel dumb here? Does Day 2-ing mean that old school retro look? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Dan don't take this in the wrong way but you have already made the wrong choice in a "day 2" modification on your car. Radial tires defeat the whole concept and don't look right IMO especially if they are a modern white lettered design like the BFG TA's. Go with vintage repop M/T's, Pro Trac's, or even Goodyears. They can be bought through Summitt racing for the M/T or Coker for the Pro Tracs. All that BS about them having a crappy ride is not true. I have been driving with the M/T's on back and Wide Ovals on front for thousands of miles and they are fine. If you are going to do it do it right. Just my humble opinion. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Well yes - the way I look at it as Day 1 - the car is brand new and then the next day (Day 2) - you add the after market goodies of that time period - rims, gauges, tires, valve covers and the like.

Thanks. That's kind of my plans for my 67 RS.

I need some period bias-ply tires though. However, I do already have glasspacks. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Better listen to Frank Magallon. Nylon bias tires. L/60 15's on the back, skinnies on the front. 15/8in. rims (if they fit) 15/4's on the front is what I run. Lakewood bars, after market fan, aftermarket tach, headers and maybe temp, oil, and amp gauges under the dash. Decals on the 1/4 windows if you have the nerve. Mostly all these products can be changed in a weekend to put your car back to stock. Lets appoint Heavy Chevy president of the DAY-2 club. How about it Frank? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Hooker just rereleased the 4 into one chrome headers and side pipes for your car. Very common mod back in the '70's. I personally would of ran a 15x8 on the rear but that is owner preference of course. Early style lakewood traction bars with the long tail are regulary on ebay for your car.

Frank,
To be honest with you, I ordered the tires before I got the wheels. The wheels are from a friend who sold them BRAND new to me for $300. He was going to e-bay them, until I stopped by. The whole day 2 thing caught my eye so I thought I would modify my cruising car. I did not even bother to look at the vintage style tires. I will have to dig up those pictures of your Chevelle Frank, and then re-think what I am trying to accomplish. Thanks guys.
-Dan
The original Colorado Inspection sticker will be going on the window too.

Dan thats cool. Cool to see that more people are going the day 2 route. IMO day 2 is in the details. Adding Cragers, Keystones, or Torque Thrusts to a car isn't day 2ing a car. That is just adding a set of wheels to a stock car. Go all the way! Come on man you USED to actually own a day 2 Camaro back on day 2! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif See attached pic of Dans old Camaro.
BTW Rick Peters I am not the mayor of anything anymore....... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Frank,
I love the tires that are your Chevelle. I called up Mickey Thomson and the smallest tire for the Indy series is a 255. Those tires are going to be too big for the Camaro. Unless I missed something or said something wrong, I don't think they make them smaller. What are some other period correct tires that are still reproduced? I love the
wide-o-ovals, but from Coker they are a bit pricey! Any suggestions?

A 255/60/R15 will fit nicely in the rear wheelwells (I've even had them in front, depending on the backspace and the front spring height etc...) 275/60/R15's will fit if you want to go wider, but the backspace has to be "right-on" and some lowered cars will rub if you don't bat roll the fenders... But you will be safe with 255's on the rear of a '70. Oh yeah, Pro Tracs come in 235/60/r15's from Coker tire

Dan what do you consider to big for tires on your Camaro? Have you tried Summitt racing for the Mickeys? Thay were the cheapest when I bought them. Even some old Goodyears would look killer with your Keystones. Protracs?

that's exactly what i'm doing to my 72 camaro.if you open up the hood it's like looking back in time.i've got the fiberglass flexilite green fan, edelbrock TM-1 intake ,old holley 850dp,oem metal fuel line with a fuel block, cal custom valve covers, fly eye air cleaner and no stainless or braided line anywhere.the interior has sun blue line gauges and tach .i'm running ralley wheels but looking for ansen sprint mags 15x10 and 15x4 in good condition.right now as a daily driver i get alot of compliments or thumbs up from people who remembered them like that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I used Mickey Thompson L/60 15's with a 1/2 in. spacer for shock clearance on the rear. I have Gabriel Hijackers on just to basically level out the ride. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif sam

Now thats the idea Chuck.
Sam I also have the same size rear tries and the Gabriel Hijackers as well.
Another nice addition is a vintage ET finned Diff cover. I got one and installed it on my Chevelle.

it's funny to over on the sgcog board they think i'm crazy for running such an outdated intake manifold. everyone says you'll be much happier running the edelbrock performer rpm air gap.some people think you need all the today's technology to go fast NOT!!! LOL.i also am thinking of installing my swap-meet find of the century "hookers 4 into 1 sidepipes the black oxide ones.i just have to get the car a little higher off the ground. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I have pair of 15x8.5 Ansen slots with 4 new repo chrome caps for $250 shipping. Absolutely flawless no curb damage or lug nut damage whatsoever.
Frank
You know the crowing touch will be the addition of the Lakewood ladder bars. I know your concerned about drilling holes in the frame but that's what welders are for if you decide to take them off. Besides whoever restored your car may have welded up holes from the original set that thta may have been on the car in the past. Did you get the ET cover from where I said they were available?

I will check out Summit a little bit later.
I know what 'slapper bars' are, but what exactly do they do? I am not sure I want to modify the suspension.
My hope for the tires is to have them fit properly (no rubbing) under the wheel wells. I can't imagine a 255s will fit. I am having a hard enough time believing the 245s will fit.
Are there any under car differences between a 1970 Camaro Sport Coupe (my car) and a 1970 Camaro SS L-34? Thanks guys.
-Dan
Musclcar: If possible could you please send me some pictures of your car. Thanks!

Slapper bars eliminate wheel hop. For 1970 Jenkins sometimes used Lakewood Bars and other times he would use a different rubber snubber for the pumpkin and a shackle kit. I saw that car both ways. I never saw ladder bars on a Jenkins car till later in the 70's. You can buy frame connectors also. Lakewood bars and a pinnion snubber also helped to control roll up from the pinnion when the car left the line. Sam /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Radials were becoming available in the '68-'69 time frame. T/As were out in the early '70s. Nurse Chev-Olds in Whitby, Ontario had a '69 Z/28 on the lot with radials, cross ram intake and track cam. The tires may have been dealer installed. Were they an option in '69? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I don't have pics of the wheels but here are 15x8.5 and 15x4's on a 71-72 Camaro with M/T L-60-15 tires. My Ansen wheels are 100% identical because the ones in the pic are also Ansens.. My wheels are mint with no oxidation or curb rash. I'm going to be away from the comouter for the next several days. email me at

One personal comment on BFGs vrs vintage era tires. We have M/Ts on Englers deuce, and Belk's will also have them(only bigger). They look period correct, and hook pretty well. I have BFGs on both of my deuces. I've found they work very well in stoplight applications. Better than anything short of a Hoosier Quick time. I've found that if you drive a car that says Yenko on it(33 years of experience) that you may as well have a target on your back, because someones gonna jack with you. I agree that they may look out of place on an older day2 car. BUT, I rather kick the guys a$$ in the other lane than be pretty. My 2 cents on why I run BFGs. Schonye - racing is not something I had in mind with my Camaro. It is a Grandma church car with a s/b 350 with 250 horse. I only bought the car because has major documents and recpeits plus 19000 original miles. I drive the car all the time. The day 2 mods should add some nice styling changes to the car not proformance upgrades.
Summit prices are for the Indy M/Ts - good compared to other places. Also, GUYS! DO NOT BUY Wide-Ovals from Coker, they are $40 cheaper at SS396.com (ground up restoration).
Hope this helps.

Dave I got my vintage finned diff cover from my boy, your number one supercar source camarojoe, aka JoeyB sYc, aka Joe, aka Brandon, aka Mr. Barr from the kiddies. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I would love to install my Ladder bars but to much modification would have to be done. The way my car sits now it can be turned back to boring stock in an afternoon. Next summer I hope to enter a whole new class of car ownership so I have to be ready to change back to stock for the potential buyer of my Chevelle at a moments notice......... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
