I love that 73 front end. I'm a big fan of the 73 SD, not as much of the 74.

Personally, I'm looking for more pics of 73-74 SD Formula's. I've got a few on the hard drive but am always looking for more.

I like the 73's myself. I dont like the nose on the 74 and a few other items. I really like this 70 RA4 I am working on now, it should be a real looker when done.

Not sure of what exactly you could be looking for. Here is a page with my 73 SD Trans Am on it. The car is almost returned back to original "look" condition. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Don't mind the "extra mopar shots" title. I was going to trash the page and help a friend with some mopar stuff but decided to make a new page for him and I never got around to changing this back.

I have to say that ChrisB's SD is gorgeous! Chris, I met you through a friend of a friend up at Ruttle's one night (I was the 2nd gen F-body fan w/ a pony tail...Mark). Didn't you have a 74 also? I seem to remember that you were going to sell one of your's for a newer Hurst or Anniversary T/A. Still have another SD?

Hi Mark, you'll have to pardon me for not remembering.
Yes, Had a 74 SD as well as the Lucerne Blue 455 HO 4 Spd 1972 Trans Am. That car wasn't for sale but I was offered a price I couldn't refuse.
I didn't buy anything new though.

Hi Chris. Are you planning to get any more TAs? I picked up 2 71s. Both are real nice orig. cars. 1 is M-22 car. 1 owner. eric from pittsburgh http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Hmmmmm...call me a cynic, but I think this is Charley's passive-aggressive marketing effort to sell this cool restoration project to one of the Pontiac geeks who have gravitated to the board in recent months. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Passive (I need some pics and info for this TLC-needing car)
Aggressive (oh, BTW, here's every picture you need to decide this one-owner diamond in the rough should be your next project)

Hey, aforementioned Pontiac geeks, can you confirm that the John Wayne cop movie featuring one of these cars in my town of Seattle was "McQ", and was it a Brewster Green non-SD? 4speed or auto? THANKS!

TOM

I'm not sure about "pontiac geeks", but the green TA in McQ, was a non SD I think. As far the sales "thing", Charlie- Tuna?, You kind of lost me. Unless you mean the 73 will be for sale? There is alot more collectors going into to the pontiac world. I think this is great, should bring more diversity into the hobby. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Thanks for the McQ trivia.

Please don't read the "geek" terminology as a slam. I use it as a sarcastic term of endearment. I've been a total car geek since I was a toddler. My userID, tom406, is based on the most dear to me of the number of FORDS I've owned-but I like everything, including Pontiacs and a whole bunch of pre-musclecar-era stuff like 30's Packards and 50's finned cars, to say nothing of my station wagon fetish. I don't bemoan the new faces on here, its just apparent by the userID's and the caliber of rare cars these guys own or owned, that they take their Pontiacs seriously.

I'm sure Charley Lillard would be happy to sell the '73 SD to someone with good intentions , a neat trade, and/or enough money. I'm just needling him a little for presenting it here and not in the CARS FOR SALE section. Maybe he will restore the darn thing, it is RED after all, so it won't disrupt the color vibe in the BARN. But wasn't he the guy needling the Pontiac guys just a few days ago? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thats because the Pontiac Guys Suck.....Just kidding. Actually the last Pontiac I restored was a 70 SJ 455 4 spd. Grand Prix. Cool car but slow. No I'm not trying to sell the SD. My big decision is ...1-do the car myself to a lessor degree than I know someone like Micky can do....2-Beg Micky to do it cheap http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif since by the time it is finished it won't be worth what I have in it...3-Just build the engine myself and have it painted and drive it. The third option is the easiest except in reality I probably won't drive it much and I also think this car is so untouched in many areas that it is important for someone like Micky to do so all those details can be referred to for other restorations. This car looks great but my hair is getting Grayer and I lately don't seem to have the enthuasium to tear into a car. I think of all those Guys that have beeen collecting projects to build when they retire. By the time they retire they either don't have the Physical abilities to do them or the desire. Or they have moved on in life to other interests.

Doing a Resto on a car is alot different than just driving the Cr*p out of one. I spend enough time just keeping them running. I already spend a bunch of time just working on what I have. Yes I could probably do just about everything except paint but I don't think I have the patience to do the research to make sure I get every detail right. I have a real appreciation for those Resto Guys that do put that extra effort in to get the little stuff right. So I could do the engine and have it painted but it would be a # 2 type car. This car at some point will get a correct resto so in essence the work I do would have to be repeated again anyway....I have had this discussion with myself before. Last one I did was a 63 Vette about a Year ago. Before that was a 65 Shelby GT 350 that I chose to send off for a Resto that has been going on for 2 Years....I dunno...I guess I just think this car is so neat that it deserves better than I would give it if I did it myself. Ask me again tomorrow and I might give you a different answer.

Charley,
I was a senior in HS when that car came out and the Buccaneer red was the ultimate. I had soured on the GTO because of the severe body change in '73 (it turned into a battleship), so the Trans Am was the car I HAD to have.

As soon as I had a fairly-decent full time job, I bought a brand new '75 T/A, and I would KILL to have an SD455 red Trans Am!!
You are lucky, man!

That looked fuel line related, and for it to mount on the timing cover like that with the angle it makes me wonder. Not too many aftermarket companies would engineer that funny angle.

No.. It is complete the way you see it. The fuel lines run right by it so I'm thinking maybe the fuel hose or fuel return hose was supposed to hook up to it. Maybe some type of accumulator..The bolt holding it looked to be factory. Wierd.

I don't know what it is, but I'm curious. I will ask our shop foreman first thing tomorrow, he's been working on the Pontiacs since early 70's. If it's factory, hopefully he'll know.

I have what may be a stupid question but here goes anyway. My parents bought a 1973 Trans Am, red with white interior, 4-spd A/C, a really nice car. Here's the question; I noticed in Charlie's pictures that his car has A/C but there are no A/C vents in the engine turned dash applique like my parents car had. Would this be something specific to the SD cars or was the A/C added by the original owner?

Charley Lillard

So Charley, in relation to the earlier question about TA A/C dash details, is your SD car equipped with factory or dealer-installed A/C? (It being a Seattle car, factory A/C isn't nearly as common here as other places.) Do you have PHS or original documentation for the options? Thanks.
TOM

Cool. I recall reading about a '73 SD Formula that had factory A/C as well. As I recall, he tried to order it with A/C and a 4-speed, but they wouldn't allow that combination. He opted to keep the A/C and get an automatic. (If I'm off-base here someone can correct me.)

Charley Lillard
02-02-2004, 12:21 PM
Mine has two ac outlets at each end of dash and two at bottom of dash. The orig owner ordered a 4 spd no ac car but it didn't come till the salesman talked him into changing into a auto ac car. Then it came right away. Before that he had bought a 71 Trans anm and a 69 Trans am.

Good Call on that web link Bandit! That's the one I remember pouring over for couple of hours a couple of years ago. There's also a cool SD-455 engine article in a 73/74 issue of HP Cars magazine (If I remember correctly, the one w/ the "cartoon'y" reddish 73 GTO on the cover).

As for the 'Intern' thing, I think I could talk my advisor in the AET (Automotive Engineering Tech) dept. to allow me to get credit for it..sure beats the hell out of beta testing diagnostic scan tool software for OTC here in MN. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Type in Ram Air restorations in any search engine should give you the web address.

Charley I just bought a 73 SD T/A in spring, it isn't finished yet, but its already going to be my favorite car.
Handles Great, Drivers position very comfortable, Great interior and seats, and of course FAST as hell.

I did not get to run this car at my local track, which just closed down, but I feel it might be as fast or faster than any of the other pure stock muscle cars I own or have owned.
Its certainly going to be right up there. Even with factory AC!

I think i have a photo that looks a little like that one,Mine wasnt as spiffy clean at the time though.I stripped my car down, but I replaced the quarter in the picture with a newer full 1/4 off a donor car.I leter finished stripping the paint on htat too.I didnt hang the full 1/4 though because I didnt want to do all the work inside my already perfect window beds.I plan on a V top for the car do it is no bigie anyway.BTW,what is the build date on your car.My car has a Vin sequence of 103.123,and was made in 11/d/72 and is a norwood car{ a plain old Esprit though},and I was wondering how fast GM was banging these cars out.I would love to have a real SD car.I raced a 73 camaro that I destroyed back in the day and I wanted to give back to the hobby by restoring a 70 396 SS camaro.I would like to have a 73 SD car along side my race car. That would be pretty cool.My car was red when I first built it,and a red SD T/A would be the icing on the cake.I cant wait to see it finished.

I have the PHS Paperwork and it shows the Factory AC. I scanned it but it is too big to post.
