I apologize in advance if some of you may think this is a dumb question. I recently purchased a mint 1969 Z/28, and I am very happy with my purchase. However, upon further examination I have reason to believe that the Muncie 22 is not original to the car. Its code is P1k28C, which if I decoded correctly is a 1971 tranny. FWIW, the seller disclosed all the #'s but I have been educating myself since I purchased the vehicle (mainly through here and other sites). So I don't feel cheated in any way. It seems that all other #'s match up and I am working on getting the car certified.

I quess I have two questions:

1) Am I right about the tranny code??

2) How much of a deduction is this when it comes to value, percentage terms would be helpful.

I think the trans might be a rocker crusher because of the C. Does the trans. have a vehicle code? Maybe it was a factory replacement for your car under warranty. I think in 1970 the M22 went to fine a spline input shaft. (Not sure of date)What do you have? Sounds like a 1971 trans. case anyway. Depends on how perfect the car is. Thanks for the quick reply. The only # I have is the P1k28C, which if I decoded correctly would be Muncie M22 rock crusher built July 28, 1971.

Excuse my ignorance VIN for the car or tranny??

The VIN derivative will be stamped near the code you mentioned. It will be something similar to '9NXXXXXX' where the Xs are the last 6 digits of the car's VIN. If there isn't a VIN stamped on the trans case, who knows where the trans came from? It does appear to be a 1971 assembled M22.
One of the best reference books on the market is Jerry MacNeish's '1969 Z/28 and SS396 Fact Book'. Pick it up and read it (over and over in my case). You'll learn quite a lot about your car thru it.
check your trans case again for another set of stamped numbers and let us know what you find.

Is it a 660 case or a 661? 660 case is a 1969 case. I'll bet its a 661 from what little I see here..BKH

Yes you are reading it right, but is it 1970 or 71 callender year. I have a P0702 010 case with an early 1966 Vette VIN, so they were building 1966 model year transmissions in early July of 1965 calender year. So with the only info available of P1K28C, I would say July 28th 1970 to be used in a 1971 model year car.
Either why this trans is not correct for the car in question.
As a point of interest the earlist date use of a 661 case is P9R10A used in 29N119544 tag#9798974 Oct. 10th 1969.
The latest date use of a 660 case is P0T30C CT0 40753 Dec. 30th 1969 for 1970 model year(this is an over the counter transmission) These are dates I have in my collection, and talking to other builders/collectors havn't found anything much different, but always open to more info...Hope this helps...Crash

Thanks Crash, you are right built in 1970 for the 1971 model year, the tranny is not original. The car came with a M-21 originally although I will take the rock crusher happily. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif
