Passport Transport was hauling a load of cars for someone out of Missouri I think. The Driver got up yesterday and opened the trailer to find there had been a fire inside. I guess a 46 Ford Truck had the battery hold down bracket short across the bat posts and destroyed it and damaged the rest of the load, all owned by one guy with no insurance. Here is a pic of the supercharged T Bird that was above it. I think lack of Oxygen is what put the fire out.

HA HA. Charley update me on what that car brings. I think it's lot #641. I checked the Barrett-Jackson website but the pictures were not that good. Hard to tell the quality of the car. The VIN should start with XS29R0G if its a real one. He does have the correct silver reflective hood decals. He gets extra points for that, as the repros are white reflective material. While you're at it copy down the entire fender tag...and get me a notarized copy.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

Not me! I've never seen that R/T before (one of 112 built if real). If you get a chance, post a picture of the fender tag.

Always beware of undercoating! The factory sprayed-on body shutz should only be inside of the front and rear wheel wells. If the car had the additional factory undercoating option it would be rather haphazardly sprayed on in areas of high probability of stone impact, etc., not the entire bottom of the car covered from side to side.

BTW, doesn't that car carrier have any insurance to cover that guys load of "well done" cars?

Charley Lillard
01-22-2004, 04:35 PM
If I was the Transport Co I wouldn't cover it either. It was the owners fault. My understanding is he charged the battery but put the hold down back on wrong, causing hte short and fire. Passport is owned by Fedex so I'm sure they are self insured.

Charley or Diego,

I hate to bother ya, but I noticed on the Barrett-Jackson site that there may be a high-priced 68 GTO going across the block. The description is below, but there's no photo. Could you maybe snap a picture of this car? It sounds like it "could" be a RAII GTO because they state it has a rare RAIV cam. Either that, or it's a typo. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Thanks!

Yes that is Garys old car but didn' t want to try and figure out how to spell his name last night. Yes the RS is the one that used to be Scott B's and was in Florida. Maybe it has just been shopped too much or maybe it is just priced too high.

Charley Lillard

The 68 L89 and the Crossram Z were from the same seller. I and many others would never buy a car from him. Last year at Monterey he had a Astro Blue LS6 convert with Protecto plate. Same car he got at BJ as a Gobi Beige car with no paperwork the year before.. He is absolutely the best at dolling up Auction cars. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

And then on to a lighter note... So I'm minding my own business and just happy to watch the madness. The variety is amazing. So I'm walking through the Motorcycle area yesterday and I see 4 Yale Motorcycles ranging from about 1910-1914 and all selling at no reserve. Now these are really cool bikes and I'm sure of that except I had never heard of them till yesterday. So I'm thinking if they go cheap on Friday I might just bid on one. This morning after breakfast I get a call from a Friend telling me the Yales are going off first thing this Morning. I'm still back brushing my teeth and it's about 9.50 and the auction starts at 10.00. Rental car madness since I'm about 5 miles away. I get parked and run all the way to the auction only to see that they are selling gas pumps etc. About a half hour later the Yales come up. The one I want is the last one. Of coarse the last one has to be the one that another guy really wants also.....I sure showed him..

I know someone who can probably tell you the name of the guy who assembled the Yale. He's big into bikes from the old boardwalk racers to current prototype GP bikes. He's an ex. (at the moment because of a major wreck at Daytona 2 or 3 years ago and doctors won't sign his papers yet) GP Bike driver, collects all kinds of bikes, has several one of none factory GP racing bikes, sold stuff to Jay Leno. Rides the old stuff at nostalgia events for owners who want them used, etc. Has a bunch of old NSU bikes, etc. I'll ask him about Yales.

Man, I'm really confused now! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif All of the sudden eveybody wants a "resto mod". It appears that a well engineered and built car is finding a new audience. Charley, you ought to be in really good shape with those Stielow cars you have. You should have put the ZL1 clone in the auction, you would have gotten $200K for it.

Stuart Adams
01-24-2004, 11:33 PM
Yeah my tastes are changing these days. I like the old body, but want todays mechanics. The original cars will always have a place, but driving them sucks. BJ is showing us that today people want both the old body but new goodies.

Salvatore
01-25-2004, 02:17 AM
I guess we should all jump on those new retro body kit car camaros that are out there. I asked Doug Marion about cars in Chevy Rumble. Like numbers matching, correct color, smog equipment, etc. He said to me in a letter and e-mail, the owner and publisher does not believe those types of cars sell magazines. You guys will be trading the ZL1's and Yenkos for retro rods with flat heads and 1969 kit car camaros with a newly manufactured VIN and build sheet. When the car is done, that will determine what the build sheet says. Even though some of the vettes brought some good money, I was alarmed with the new trend. Maybe I am reading into it to much.http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif

Just got through watching the end of the Barrett-Jackson auction for the 3rd and final day on the Speed channel.
I was really amazed at what the 69 Camaro COPO 9561 went for, I thought it would break the $100,000 mark.
I was discusted at the remarks that some of the announcers made about the COPO. They didn't like the exterior color, or the interior color, or just the "plain-jane" look about it. I tell ya, they don't know much about COPO's with remarks like that! If they did, they would have praised it, and not put it down. They also put alot of other cars down because they weren't 100% perfect. I guess it is hard to please everybody.

just shows everyone wants what they see on tv, nash bridges, american hotrod, and choppers, custom is in big time , original is not. Oh and when the stock market is down like past years they invest in original, when its up like now they spend profits on daily drivers w/ aftermarket a/c... cool I guess I don't have to worry about that trim plate anymore!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

The trouble with rods is that they are cutting edge this year and out of date in a short few years and will be priced accordingly. Original is always original. They aren't making any more of them although some people try.

Yes the Copo Chevelle sold. The whole thing is madness kinda like I thought it would be. But I never expected to go this wild. The Guy that sold the 400K Street rod bought it for 125K. A wrong color 67 Shelby Gt 500 with a aluminum 427 engine sells for 260K. The guy bought that 427 engine from Shelby last year and installed it. So he had a wrong engine, wrong color Shelby and a letter from Carol that he has the only one and some dope pays 260K..The 210K 55 Chevy was a Killer car that the owner was in about 190K. Full tube frame with a C5 Vette Transaxle and a killer big block. At Russo and Steele tonight they sold the #1 Prototype 66 Shelby Mustang for 260K. It was a stunning car but they figured it would bring about 140K. There are some very wealthy People coming out to play with cars. Some of them know what they are looking at and some just want the shiniest car. I think my Shelby is the best one there is but I bet if it had gone across the block right after the one with the wrong color and engine it would not have brought as much. The 2 Factory Ford team Mustangs sold for 27K for the good one and about 35 K for the crummier one. 27K was cheap but nobody seemed to want a old Ford Drag car. The Porsche CTR Yellowbird was built at a cost of about 300K but sold at about 50K. That is a 200 plus mph car that won the One lap of America race. In all this mess there were some great deals. I am absolutely exhausted. This what you would call car overload...Oh wait, I gotta go back and pay for my Yale tomorrow..and here is a pic I forgot.

Regarding the '68 L89 Chevelle convertible......

There has never been any documentation discovered to support that GM ever built such a car is what I have read. I've never seen it noted in any production total breakdowns by numerous sources. As the description reads with the car at BJ it claims "believed to be". Doesn't mean one didn't fly under the radar and get produced but skepticism remains. Dealer conversion?

The bidding was appearently up to 89k and stalled out
reserve 110 , did not sell.
Sort of disapointing you might think.

This is what some press guy had to say below!

HOT OFF THE PRESS REPORT FROM THE BARRETT-JACKSON
Mark C Bach

Well folks the Barrett-Jackson auction is in full swing. 3,000
bidders
(paying $300 a pass) were expected over the four days to bid overly
$30
million on cars. If you had access to the Speed Channel on cable you
saw
expanded coverage including an eye ball popping six hours on Friday
alone! Thursday had a light rain but didn't detract too many folks
from
coming and the cloudy skies on Friday morning soon departed to a
brilliant sunny day. Barrett Jackson had to scurry to find some
pumps to
remove some rain water and a few spots were "slippery when wet" (after
all, the main sale area is a polo field) but Barrett Jackson, as
always
kept a firm hand on things and had a great first two days of
auctioneering.

No surprise that a 69 brown Camaro "COPO" that didn't sell at last
week's
Silver Auction was at Barrett-Jackson, where it didn't sell AGAIN!
Ouch,
the bidder had a $110,000 reserve at Silver and after failing to raise
sufficient interest, was in the unsold corral with a requested price
of
$99,995 (heck why not ask for an even $100K?). I'm not sure this COPO
will ever sell that high when outfitted with a burnt brown paint, but
of
course if you paint it a more eye appealing color, you lose the
authenticity.

My two cents on this sale with no owner change. I can't believe that anyone would send a valuable car through with no reserve..............unless you had a friend bidding it up for you. So my suspicious mind says that big $ sales on no reserve cars are questionable. But, I hope all the big prices are true and that the value of my cars get dragged up by it. However, until my car is sold and the money is in my back pocket, I haven't done anything. I have a friend who was counting his money on his Ferrari 275 GTB? Had an offer of 470000 years ago and turned it down, it dropped as low as 200000 and it is now a 250000 car. You just don't know what is going to happen. Fortunately, I like the cars, and want to have them. If I make money on them fine, if not, oh well, you only live once and I get pleasure from them.

If you look at the bids you will notice that the car was stagnate at 28,800. on the 22nd, then on the 24th after the auction it took off, this is a number 2 car as described by owner. If you look at the car it has some issues as per correctness. I think they saw what happened on B-J and bid it up themselves so the car wasnt "gave away". Sure a confusing time for any 69 Z/28 owner. Now the big question, What are they really worth?

"That 1970 White GTO Judge sold for $51,300!
On its best day a Ram Air III WHITE Judge would only bring high $30's. If it was a Ram Air IV it might get that $50k.
I wish I would have sold my Judge's there "

As the former owner of this car, and the current owner of 7 other Judges, I'd have to disagree. Even though another member has stated that the car was "less than perfect" (apparently based solely on the fact that I forgot to stick on the Ram Air decals before shipping the car to the auction, and having now Fed Ex'd them to the new owner with digital pics on where to place them), I would love to have you guys take my check book and get me EVERY 70 RAIII 4 speed Judge in this condition for even $40k.

For what it is worth, no , the car was not a #1, 100pt show car, but it was also not represented as such. It WAS a 100% numbers matching and original component car, and I mean ALL numbers, distributor, engine, heads, carb, radiator, water pump, alternator, starter, brake calipers,etc...the only "wrong" bits were the GM repo fan shroud (corner missing) and a new windshield to replace the one my painter fell on and cracked (don't ask,you don't want to know). It was a 36k original mile car that I did a nice driver resto on, all original panels, detailed undercarriage with NO undercoating and all correct finishes, original wheels, super strong fresh motor, all new busings, SS lines, etc.,a truly GREAT and strong car that I'd have sold to anybody. The same can not be said of most cars sold at auction, hell, the ones I buy usually can't make it to the truck!

So, if you would be so kind, don't talk out of class. If my Judge wasn't worth the $47,500 paid for it, sold NO RESERVE with no jacking or games at a live auction at 9:45 PM,on a rainy Friday night, where would you think a more realistic market price could be found?

By the way, the white/red 70 Judge Convert (M21 , 4.33 car) on display at Barrett-Jackson near the main tent that is a 3 time GTOAA Nat'l champ is, IMO, not as nice of a car as the hardtop I sold. It was a show car, but couldn't "dance" like the hardtop. The convert is also my car, so I feel safe talking about it as well.

Don't mean to piss anybody off, but I feel I have a pretty good knowledge of what the car was and was not since I owned it, restored it, and was there selling it. BUT, by all means, if you have one you think is just as nice and worth less, call me! I already regret selling the one I did. Couldn't duplicate it for the same $42k I got net.

But then again, I could always buy a bogus Z-28 for $123k, a hot rod GT500 for $286k, or any number of fakey-dos for 2-3x the money. And what about the 64-67 GTO converts that were ALL NOM, shined up cars with that sleazy "get ready for auction look" that all brought over $60k?

Regards,
Colin

Ouch! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gifIt's scary to think what these things are going for now. Interesting, that it pulled more $$ than the 70 Hemicuda. In the past the B-body Hemi Mopars have gone for less than the E-body Hemi Mopars, with the exception of the Cuda and Challenger Hemi ragtops. There is something to be said for the enjoyment factor of the bigger cars. Having had Cudas and Chargers, the Chargers are a much better riding car. And they have a trunk the size of the Cuda's engine compartment! As for rarity, Chrysler made 112 Hemi Charger R/T's in 70 (56 4 spds and 56 autos) vs. 652 of the 70 Hemicudas. I guess if I thought about it more, I wouldn't drive mine. Now I have to call my insurance guy and refigure the value on ours (It's an R/T-SE, which breaks the numbers down into the single digits. (4 four speeds and 9 automatics) - kind of like a R/S-Z28: a luxury trim option on the performance option. Thanks for the update.

I think Charley pretty well covered it on the other thread.Made up car, bogus P-O-P, less than reputable seller with a really good attorney.

Oh yeah, BTW, Barrett-Jackson does not check paperwork or history, only cares if the car is shiny and you have the title and balls enough to let it rip no reserve! See no evil, hear no evil - and buyer beware because "all representations are the sellers, and not Barrett-Jacksons". What does that tell you?

Colin

I didn't buy a thing at B-J (unlike The Lillard), but I did buy a 1961 Dodge Dart Phoenix with the D500 305HP Big Block at the Silver auction the prior week.

Very cool car, I bought it because it is the only one I have ever seen! It is the car on the HMN 2003 calendar for October, and it was in SIA magazine in 2000.

Push-button trans, and it chirps the tires on upshifts! Plus, we discovered that when driving home from B-J after a few drinks that the car actually drove BETTER if I took my hands off of the wheel and let IT drive - at 80 mph!

I think I saw Charley pedaling some freaky looking bicycle in the parking lot, but it was raining, and well, those drinks.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Barret-Jackson posted the auction results.

Maybe they've been up for a few days, but I didn't see them posted 'til now.
