View Full Version : How the Internet is ruining hot rodding...

Anyone read the "Starting Line" column in the March issue of Hot Rod? (I got the subscription for free when MCR died). The guy has some great points about bulletin boards and their "clan mentality". I see this happening more and more each day...

Yes, I just read that last night and I agree with Dave Freiburger's sentiment. One of the reasons I joined this forum recently was the professional demeanor of the participants. I'd consider Frieburger's editorial a must-read for all of us. Food for thought, if you will.

Yes, Muscle Car Review was bought out by the company that owns Hot Rod and they replaced my subscription with HR.

Muscle Car Review has been gone for about 2 years now http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Not entirely true. The publisher still owns the name, and does pump out an issue every now & then. The last one I saw was on the newstands in the Fall. It's not as good or frequent as it used to be.Usually recycled articles from the past.

Of course it is clan mentality. Most boards are set to serve the needs of a certain group of individuals, ones with a common interest. Whether it be Chevy supercars, LS-6 Chevelles, Corvettes, Cobras, Shelbys, Pontiacs, whatever. In the same fashion as many of the nation's car shows and even magazines, that are make or model specific. Is this a bad thing? I do not think so, as no one is forced to join a certain group, or read a certain magazine and, the best part, by living in the US of A, anyone can host their own show/board, setting their own rules and agenda, and even limiting who can participate if they so desire.

I thought those were just special editions of "Car Craft" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif (I believe there were 2 of these special issues)

Frieburger's point was that forums, at least the ones he's on, tend to descend into sniping and back-biting instead of staying on-topic: CARS. Again, I like this forum because we interact with a high level of professionalism and respect for varying opinions and when things begin to get a little "snitty" the moderators stop it cold before things get out of control. (I even got a joke deleted because of a word we all know and love: "__ts." A reminder to me that this is a professionally run forum! Thank you CL.)
Anyway, read Frieburger's editorial (OPINION, by the way) carefully and you'll understand where he's coming from. The Internet is like a car--you feel safer inside and have more courage and thus may say or do something to someone that you would NEVER dare do if you were standing right in front of that person. (Unless you are a really big dude and can kick my _ss.)

I agree with Freiburger . . . The best name I have heard anyone call the internet is "The Electronic Liars Club." It isn't worth lieing about things because someone will find out sooner or later because of the number of honest people on line . . . http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif There are too many people/kids hiding behind their computer screens these days and feel safe saying anything they want . . . I'm glad that stuff is kept to a minimum here . . . http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
Very good post. And the very reason members who have been following the censorship thread will see it no longer exists. After polling the moderators and administrators of this board, it was decided that the thread was no longer serving any useful purpose, except for mud slinging. Thus, was deleted. Thanks for understanding. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

It was a pretty weird thread to start with...but Zedder had a valid question at the end of it which had nothing to do with the stuff at the beginning of the thread...it was about a fake build sheetcar and his post was deleted even though he didn't say what car or who owned it...

Considering I started the thread that was deleted I thought I might comment on the fact that the purpose I had was served by my very first post. Much of what came after had nothing to do with the original subject matter. The views I had in the initial post that were expressed were not correlated with an ongoing discussion here concerning a subject that I am not aware of. I dont have a point of view concerning what went on at the end of the thread, while censorship can be used at the wrong time and for the wrong reasons it is also necessary in some cases to protect the rights of others. I wont comment on if it was right or wrong at removing the thread as I was not part of that situation and didnt have the facts. My initial post was on the board long enough for anyone interested to read. While free speech is a valuable right we all have, conducting ourselves in a civil manner towards others is a responsibility we also have. I myself have been learning this over time. Call it growth, call it evolution,(I prefer a shovelhead), or call it common sense.
Thanks,

Then lets keep it offline so no one knows the "dirty little secret". Zedder..e-mail me the info so I know what to beware of...this is pretty silly.

I go to Camaro, Toyota 4x4, SS454 truck, fullsize Chevy truck, F-body boards because I have a focus in those areas. I can collect specific information from each group. It should appear to be a clan mentality because the people share a common theme. What you choose to believe is up to you. I like to keep an open mind, but some people always want to appear to be "correct" and will take both sides on an issue. That's when it's time to come to your own conclusion and choose who you believe and who you don't. I know I don't have all the answers and I never will, but I'll always try to help someone out with what I know if I'm confident with the information.

Hot Rod probably hates the Internet because people no long rely on Hot Rod for their advertisements... ah I mean articles. This hobby always was and always will be clannish. It’s how trends start and end. We are all victims of peer pressure. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
