With the current trend of ebay scam ads going on anyone recognize this car. Michigan vintage front plate 14M-035, Silver COPO and or COPO Clone, becasue someone is using the images in what is probably a scam. Clues are private auction, has no clue what he is describing, will ship the car after receiving a $999 deposit. Vague description of location, hasn't sold anything ever. Seller legion 9

If this car picture belongs to anyone you might want to inform Ebay.

imo, if ebay doesn't do something about this kind of crap, they're gonna be shooting themselves in the foot. when it comes to large dollar items like this no one will trust the items listed on their site, and they will become nothing more than a flea market.

How would Ebay go about stopping stuff like this? There is no way to screen the millions of items put up for auction every day. By the time it is caught, someone has already been screwed. If Ebay finds a way to police the auctions, the scammers will come up with something new. Ebay needs to send an email to all users describing these auctions and how they work. All we, as users of the car websites, see are the auto related scams. I'm sure there are plenty of other items that we never hear about. These scammers are making money off the greed of the Ebay users. The people that are getting scammed are the ones that are going for the "deals that are too good to be true."

if they could some how regulate the big money items, i'm sure the amount of those type items listed are a great many also. its such a shame, i guess i need to come back to reality and understand the world we live in.

Man! What a CRIME this should be! This has got to have some sort of liabilty issue with eBay and local state laws as well! And, apparently this was listed with a Chicago, Illinois location! This is just WRONG!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

Don't blame eBay, blame PEOPLE. Dishonest people will always, always, always find a way to separate other people from their money (and/or their valuable possessions). All eBay can do is respond to our complaints when such scam auctions are underway by cancelling the auction and perhaps bar that seller from eBay. But all the barred seller has to do is re-register under a new alias, etc., and they're back in business. The world is full of sob stories about people getting robbed in one way or another and eBay is just another method of doing so. In my experience eBay's great, you just have to watch out for the crooks.

I just got off the phome with Cam Motors in Conneticut. They are the ones that have the car on the MotorCities website. I let them know about the auction. They said they had the car on Ebay a couple months ago but they didn't know anything about the current auction. Hopefully they can contact Ebay and get the auction stopped before someone gets taken.

I notified ebay through a live chat, they are going to end the auction, seems now that I know who this guy is I should be able to notify the Feds? Any thoughts on this?

Ok, I got him guys, in my past life I spent a lot of time around people with the proverbial criminal mind. That kind of thinking is what it's going to take to get these kind of guys. Thats what it took to outsmart this mutt.

Here is how they pull this off. First, there are more then one in on the scam, that explains the fact that when this guy was asked by someone from this board where to send the deposit to the reply was an address in new York, while he claims residence in Illinois. Therefore he never accepted any payment in his name or his address. That makes it tough to catch the guy at any more then running a false auction for kicks. Meanwhile, the mutt up in New York is running different auctions with the payment going to the Illinois address. Common sense would dictate the old "If it's too good to be true...", but, the chance at a super good deal for $999? Many would take the risk. So, Heckel and Jeckel get together at the end of the month and split up the dough. Pretty clean except here is how they screwed up......

The idea is to open a account with Ebay, (while it is probebly dozens of accounts), buy up a bunch of little stuff to get good feedback then do the big$$$ scams as long as possible on that account. He almost got it right.....In about 10 more days it would have been too late to click on the feedback left for him from a past buy he made to see the auction which allows a Email from anyone(Me), to the person he last bought from, which that honest Ebayer provides the full name and address of the person they sent the item to in Illinois, and there it is, full name and address of our cyberspace thief. Big thanks to Jennifer who is an honest Ebay Power Seller and more then willing to help with that information. The good outweigh the bad on Ebay.

This guy is going down.

Motown,
Nice investigative work but how do you know that the peoson that the account is registered to is the one running the scam? I would almost be willing to bet that the person that listed this car gained access to someone elses Ebay account. These people can't be dumb enough to run a scam using their real name and email address. This is probably connected to the emails that said they were from Ebay and saying that your account would be closed down if you didn't contact them with your Ebay info, including your password. I hope that the info you have is correct and these guys bet busted but I would be very surprised if it happens. Just my opinion.

I think this one is dumb enough. I emailed him using the link on the auction page, that would mean someone must be able to block and intercept your Email, when he emailed back he used his personal Email with his name, which is the same as the name on the Ebay account. Following are the addresses, for the ebay account holder and for where payment is to be sent.

James,I think you are right on with that one because I have gotten emails like that in the past from what looks like there from Ebay but acually there not along with other emails that have the topic like RE:question for seller item #****** and when you check the item number or the user name that sent it they show up as invalid.I aways forward those emails to [email protected] thats the email address to ebays investigation group that checks out those emails and they say just to forward the emails like that to them and they will check it out and get back to you on it.In a response I got from ebay about one of those emails I forworded them they said that those people try to steal peoples ebay password so they can access their accounts.
If you can gain access to someones account I think you can change/update the email address or even add a payment address. In this case I think thats what they did and Chris from granite city just might be innocent. So when you email the seller it goes to a different person but he responds using Chris's name. Also since Ebay bills your credit card for the selling fee's I would think that Chris's (the innocent one in this) credit card might get billed also for the selling fees.
This is just a theory.

Dave,
That's the point I was trying to make. When I get emails asking for my Ebay or Paypal user info, I always forward it to Ebay or Paypal. The Paypal email address is [email protected]. I'm also surprised the auction hasn't been stopped. I called Cam Motors and let them know about the auction. They had the car on Ebay a couple months ago and I think they still own the car. I would think that they would contact Ebay.

HERES HOW I UNDERSTAND IT WORKS, IF YOU SELL THINGS ON EBAY! YOU GET A NOTICE FROM EBAY SAYING SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR ACCOUNT!,WHEN YOU RESPOND,THIS PERSON WHO SENT YOU THE EMAIL GETS ALL YOUR EBAY INFO! THEN HE GOES INTO YOUR ACCOUNT AND CHANGES THE EMAIL ADDRESS AND PAYMENT INFO!, THEN HE PUTS SOMEBODY ELSES CAR ON YOUR ACCOUNT AND TRYS TO GET YOU TO SEND 2500.00 DOLLARS TO HIM, AND TELLS YOU THE BALANCE IS DUE WHEN HE SHIPS YOU THE CAR! AND YOU GUYS KNOW THE REST. THE MONEY IS USUALLY SENT TO ANOTHER COUNTRY! EBAY REALLY NEEDS TO STOP THIS http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif
