When moving around some parts yesterday, I got my hands on a -68 302 intake-manifold. Holding it in my hands, I came to think about what Ken Dahl told us when we met him back in -86. Ken Dahl still lives in Cedar Rapids Iowa and has been dealing with High-Performance Chevrolets, for a long time. We bought the manifold from him.
He told us that back in the good old days, there was a local guy running a Yenko Camaro. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif
He remembered it so well because he always had a policecar behind him !
Does anyone have a Yenko-car that has been in the area,or have anyone heard of a Cedar Rapids guy with a Yenko ?

Anders, the last I knew Gary Holub owned it. In its day it was the top dog in CR. Schonye

Gary owns a LOT of supercars. I do not know the verification status on them, so I won't make a statement either way. But, I know he has a LOT of Yenko stripes on cars in his garage. He also has a ZL1. He is a pretty big hitter in tis area when it comes to finding cars. I do know he owns a fathom green 69 Yenko....is that the one you're asking about?

Carl Stuber isn't that far away either. At one point he had Fathom, LeMans and Daytona examples...

Do you know if Gary or Carl owned a Yenko in the late sixties or early seventies ? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I don't think so, Anders. Gary would have known about them then, but I don't think he owned any until the early to mid-80s. Carl was later than that...

I don't think Gary had any until maybe the very late 70's. I'm thinking more like mid 80's. The car I believe you're thinkig about was in Swisher Ia. not far from CR. I think the org. owner worked for Sears, as I knew people who worked with him back when he was running the streets. It was a serious urban legend. I asked Gary about the car, and he said he had it. Don't know if he still does, but will be seeing him soon and will ask. Schonye

I believe in the Muscle Car Review where Gary was featured as having the largest Yenko collection in the world, it states that he bought his first Yenko which was a Camaro in I think 1984-1985?

Bill Pritchard

Could it be Gary Crawford? I think he's not too far from Cedar Rapids, and he bought his Yenko Camaro brand new.

Greetings: Just visiting the website I came across this post. I own the Fathom Green Yenko that you were referring to. Yes, the cops were always chasing it and it has quite the history here in Cedar Rapids. Gary Holub did own the car, and then I bought it from him. The original owner still lives right down the road from me and him and his wife come over to visit and watch NASCAR, but he has no interest in the car. He has done everything that he set out to do with it. Now he wants to drive the 2002 ZL-1 SUPERCAR! We even took the Yenko to the 50th anniversary with the original owner and wife to the Cordova World Series of Drag Racing and had it on display. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Hearing about a car eighteen years ago, and now I can take a look at it on your homepage. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
I like the fathom green cars to. I recently bought a -69 396 SS Chevelle, that Iīm going bring back to original specs: fathom green with black vinyl top.

Hey Captain Carl, http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I love the car! And the stories, I hear about it WOW!!! Yes this is the SAME YENKO that was purchased by KW at Friedly OLDS! Well to make a long story short a fellow gear head , state trooper and Camaro owner was working the local 4 lane hwy that I live on and he saw me doing a U turn in the median one afternoon abot 5pm while I was out "EXERCISING" the YENKO and we sat in the median for 45 minutes talking. Imagine the look on peoples faces as they stared at us. Not much has changed since the early 70's when Kenny had the car! Funny as it is, I wear a YENKO shirt at a local car show and people out of the blue come up to me and say "HEY DID YOU EVER KNOW OF A GREEN YENKO THAT WAS IN CEDAR RAPIDS? I wondere what ever happened to that car?" And now you know the rest of the story. k http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

My brother spent some time chasing Kenny down in some of his other cars......mostly on dirt around Iowa for many years. Funny how alot of the Yenko Camaros seem to have drifted in and out of the late model driver's paths. Much like the engine Anders now has in his car...I think that spent some time in a late model campaigned out of Waterloo by Kastli. That is how Dralle got the motor, VERY SMALL WORLD! Now if I could find one of your car's brothers out of Friedley...............

Sorry about that, it really is funny though how I sitting in my living room in Iowa can carry on a conversation with a person around the world from me about parts that.......

Dick sold the block in the late eighties,to someone who put it in a -68 Corvette and claimed that it was a ZL-1 Corvette.

Have we heard that one before ?
Iīve been trying to keep track of it, but Iīm guesstimating that there are about ten GM ZL-1 blocks in Sweden so I donīt know who has it now.

No Phil, his name was Slager. He worked as a butcher.
The way I remember it the block was decked but had a partial VIN. I know I made a note of every stamp and number on that block, but I canīt find it today.

Ed helped us finding an apartment and let us use his garage to gather the original hiperf stuff we bought. But he wasnīt really interested in it, thatīs how I remember it.
Ed, Becky and their son Aaron lived on 1819 Washington Ave SE. Iīd be glad to get in touch with them again.
Thatīs their black car in the background. A Monte Carlo Aero coupe ? Donīt remember more than that Ed talked about the rearwindow and Nascar. Was it special ?

Here's one of the Poncho AeroCoupes that popped up for sale here in Canada a couple days ago.. Being a Canadian documentable car also less common than the Aero-Monte's, it'd be cheap fun for someone that should appreciate in value over the next decade too?.

Yes I think that is a 79 Caprice.

When I was in Chicago in May 1979 AVIS gave me one such Caprice because they didn't have the smaller car I had reserved in advance. I didn't complain about that http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif I still remember that rear window.

Carl, Do you still own this car? My dad worked at a machine shop on the south side of Cedar Rapids in the early 70's and use to tell me a story about a Yenko that I never got tired of hearing. I'm assuming it was about this car, but, who knows? This is how I remember it anyway: Dad worked with a guy who was always bragging how fast his 68 4 speed SS 396 Camaro was. Dad drove a 68 Highland Green Mustang GT with a 390 in it and the Camaro could usually outrun him by a car length or so in a stop light to stop light race. One of the guys in the machine shop knew the guy with the Yenko(Kenny?) through a friend of a friend so they asked the 68 owner if he ever raced the Yenko. Everybody knew the Yenko was the fastest car in town so they got a good laugh when the 68 owner said that they had indeed raced several times and it was usually a toss-up who won, depending who got off the line first. Since everybody figured it was a lie, they decided to call his bluff and see what the Camaro was made of. The guy who knew Kenny got word to him about the stories the 68 owner was spreading to see if he wanted to put him in his place. A night was picked for the shootout and everybody knew about it except the 68 owner. Dad conveniently asked him for a ride to work that afternoon so he could get word back to the rest of the guys in the shop about the outcome that night. On the way home as they pulled up to the light the Yenko pulled up beside them and revved up the engine offering a challenge. The 68 owner revved his engine to answer the challenge, dad said the poor guy actually thought he had a chance. I'm sure most of you know exactly what happened next. When the light turned green the Yenko blew out of the hole and destroyed the poor 68 by several car lengths in a matter of seconds. Dad said the guy didn't even get out of first gear before he gave up, let off and took dad home without saying a word! That ended the stories about how fast the 68 was made enough of an impression on my father that he shared the story with me several times over the next 20 years. I always wondered if the story true or not, but, after reading this thread I think it actually might be? I hope so because I still have as much fascination with muscle cars today as I did 30 years ago the first time I heard it.

My '87 Monte Carlo SS Aero coupe.

The Values of these hasn't changed much in 20 years unless its an extremely low mileage car or New in the Wrapper..... this ones a 30k original example that's stagnant in the market , just like the G-P Aeros......

People are restoring 'em, though. Demand (and prices) for parts has certainly increased, at least around here. In the past year, I've sold some G-body odds and ends for decent money, stuff that ten years ago would have ended up in the trash.

I know this thread is 11 years old, but I've been looking for people who knew the car scene in the Cedar Falls area in the 70's and 80's. My '68 H/O was sold through Friedley Olds (likely used, as original invoice dealer is JJ Wright), and was stored in a Shell Rock barn from likely the mid-80's until 4 years ago. I talked to Mr. Friedley, and he remembered selling several H/O's, nothing in particular about mine.

I have a ton of pictures and information on it here: https://www.oldsmobilecentral.com/forums/restorations-projects-/1968-hurstolds.php

The car had headers, Montgomery Ward air shocks, 4.66 gears, the trans had aftermarket high performance clutches and the higher stall th350 converter... somebody was out trying to do some racing. I'd be curious to see if anybody ever saw this car around back in the day.

Do you have the car, or are you looking for it? I don't remember that car, but there was/maybe still is, one setting in a junk yard in Wis not to far from Dubuque.
Same yard as the infamous Yenko dirt track Chevelle.

Cedar Rapids was insane back then. Every stop light was a drag race. All makes and models. ist ave Plymouth had 3 transport loads of AAR Cudas. Mr G's speed shop had 2 locations if I remember correctly.

Now they have speed cameras, and decibel meters. If you fart to loud you get a ticket.
