anybody advise me on the "minimal" length of a car transport trailer i could buy, not a 5th wheel type, and a good builder of these trailers. also if ya don't mind w/out stirring up to much dust, how about your thoughts on a new diesel truck to pull this trailer.

I have a 20' enclosed trailer. A Camaro fits just fine but that's about it. If I were to do it over I would go at least 24'
with the 5,000 lb. axles (10,000 GVW)

I have a 24 foot Haulmark trailer. All aluminum with 2 5K LBS axles. It is used, I think a 2000 model? You can get them very cheap!

Trailers are everywhere, just look around. You could have saved yourself a couple of bucks by getting in a few months ago, but you operate about like I do! It would be hard to go wrong with ANY of the newer diesel trucks...

Only buy a cheap trailer if you plan on buying more than one. Have had several Haulmark and Pace - they just dont hold up. Don't want to trailer your pride and joy and worry about breaking down or falling apart.
As far as new diesel trucks - Chevy duramax - hands down!
Am expecting arrival of my new 4500 series Chevy Kodiak next week.
Went toe to toe with a Ford Superduty and blew it away hauling two cars back from Charlotte!

Good friend of mine uses Dodge Duallys with Diesel's to pull his work trailers. He has used them for years with great success. He installs commerical gutters. He just got one of the new 4 door models and just loves it. Says he gets 16 to 20 mpg depending on load and headwinds. No major motor problems with them.
He has a 2001 extended cab with only 60,000 on it for $25,000.
Not sure if that is a good price or not?
I have a 32' Chapparal and a Chev 1 ton 4 dr Dually with it converted to run on Propane. I once went from Tulsa to Minneapolis on what I had on board. Had to stop 21 mile's out side of town for gas.
I guess I will be in the market for a new rig this fall. I can't quite get two cars in mine now and my truck is getting old just like me.

I drove a buddy's '04 Duramax/Allison combo the other day (new one with 590lb-ft) and loved it. I wish we'd had something ready to hook onto and give it a good work out, but I've talked to a couple other people that really like their's.
69motionvet: what kinda GVCW you looking at with your new 4500? These new CDL laws are killing me...

I pull a 20' Featherlight Enclosed trailer and I pull it with a Ford Lightning pickup with no problems.

I just bought a '04.5 325 horse / 600 lb. ft. Cummins Dodge 3500 dually four door. I pull a 28' enclosed Classic Dominator trailer. I absolutely LOVE the truck ! It rides like a luxury car, and tows like a Kenworth. Classic enclosed trailers have always been considered to be one of the premier enclosed trailer manufacturers. I've had no problems with mine since I've had it. They've upgraded a bunch of stuff since mine (1998). They are really nice units !! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Quite the upgrade to the wayward Dodge truck collection there Marks! Like I said, I think you'd be hard pressed to find ANY of the new diesel offerings not suitable for the job. But, I will say this: pay close attention to the tires put on those trucks (from the factory) when pulling. I've seen a couple of tires from different brands of HD trucks that weren't much more than your standard fare light duty truck tire...nothing you'd want on there with a substantial load.

Don't try to make a turnaround on a narrow dead end street!
They just take up too much realestate when they do.

I like to hear that about those trucks. I think that will be my choice later this summer.

Throw on a module, some propane injection and a shot of nitrious from Bully Dog Technologies (http://www.bullydog.com/index.pl) along with an aftermarket intake and exhaust upgrade and you can pull ANYTHING! LOL I remember seeing some numbers on a Bullydog setup that was in the 600-700 horsepower range and 900+ lb/ft of torque! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

You can't beat a B or ISB Cummins. If anyone wants a power upgrade let me know. It's what I do. Diesel Injection (http://www.dieselinjection.net)

the cummins engine is rated as the best, only problem with the dodge is the transmissions are failing on them right and left.

I agree on the Dodge trans. It is the weak link. There is some aftermarket items out that really helps though. We like the ATS stuff. We have a 96 3/4 ton that has their parts in it and the trans feels good and is very strong.

I don't know about the latest Dodge offerings ('04.5), but a buddy of mine switched from GM's to a Dodge (HO, 6-speed) and he likes everything but the truck itself...

George: that 2 car stacker with living quarters is a pretty nice looking unit. Do you make a 4 car trailer, without living quarters?

LV, how bout some pics of that renegade toter and trailer ! I love that setup!

Yep, we plan to do Henry's again this summer.
I forget the Cat engine series number, but it's a 425HP/1200TQ with a Fuller 10 speed electric tranny. It does a nice job across country and has the creature comforts taboot.

Hey Gary: do you do any thing with the 3116 Cat?
GaryH
04-12-2004, 03:42 PM
I haven't been able to get my hands on a 3116 yet so I'm not sure. If the injector and map connectors are the same as a C-10 or C-12 our computer should work though. If you get in the area stop in and I'll check for you http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I am also looking to buy a enclosed trailer for my 70 Nova. Can anyone recommend a company who makes a quality trailer and what are recommended options. I am looking for basic transportation and storage.
Second question: My tow vehicle is an 86 K5 Blazer. Should I even consider using it with the new trailer?
Thanks,
Greg

If you ever tow a inclosed trailer, with a 1 ton Dually you will be impressed. Very stable in cross winds. Blazers are not bad to tow a open trailer with, but the extra pair of tires on the Dually sure do make it more stable. The bigger the trailer the more you will need one.
