The rare cars are still out there. A friend came to me yesterday asking for help as he had found several musclecars that could be bought and he needed someone with knowledge in that area to keep him from a train wreck. I had been fairly certain that my own neighborhood within a five mile radius of my house had been picked clean. Not the case.
In a barn five minutes from me owned by the same person for over twenty years I found myself looking at a two owner 69 Chevelle SS L78 post car, red/black, and parked in front of that (even though not a GM, still extremely rare) was sitting a 1968 fastback Fairlane 500 "R" code 428 Cobra Jet, all original running and complete. Along with these two came a complete rebuilt 427 Vette engine, a spare post Chevelle parts car, as well as a twenty year collection of spare high performance parts for both. After years in this neighborhood I had not seen, heard, or had any idea about these cars, almost overnight the owner decided screw it, my friend happened to be leaning on the right bar at the right time buying the owner the right pitcher of beer to cry in, and waalaa, the next day these rareties changed hands for a price I wont even put down here because it sounds two much like the Corvette little old lady son killed in Viet Nam story.
The moral is guys, never stop looking and talk to everybody. It is entirely possible that you could find a COPO, Yenko, or something as rare within a few miles of your house tucked away in a garage for years buried in spare parts. I talked with a knowledgeable Ford person today, this particular R code Fairlane as equipped had a production number of 22. Never say never and keep hunting!
