View Full Version : A new way to Scam you.........Engine Scams

OK, some of you have seen the recent posts in the tech area about the 427 I bought and was shipped a 402 instead.
Theres a new way to scam you on ebay. Here's how it works. They sell some legit objects, high dollar things, in my case engines. They sell them cheaply, and get great 100% pos feedback on related high dollar things. Then when they are ready, they put these things on ebay (in this case a rebuilt HiPerf 427) Once bidding gets up there and several people email them back asking specifics, they edit the auction with a "buy it now" offer. Remember, there feedback on high dollar itmes is great. Things like "said engine had 400 horses, I got 425! Great Seller" and such. They then call everyone who calls about the buy it now, which usually is not to low to believe, and in fact is a little high, but he is offering up a motor that is supposed to be totally rebuilt by a shop, which uses all name brand goodies in it. When you send the money, he ships you a cheap replacement item that is not worth near what you paid for it.
It is then VERY hard to get anything done, as you have recieved something for your money, and in fact in this was was an engine. You then have to explain to a investigator the difference between a 68 vette 427 and a 70 Monte Carlo 402. The seller claims you bought a Big Block Chevy and that is what he shipped you. It gets real hairy, unlike other scams where you get nothing for your money. They make thousands by selling you a 1500$ motor for up to 3 times that amount. Not a bad "profit" at your (my) expense.
In my case, the only good thing is this kid (He's a 24 year old college student) reportedly tried this last on a senator from Michigan, and was arrested prior to my complaint. Apparently his father is an attorney, and sued the police department in Bellingham, WA. Man, were they glad to hear from me. They really want to go after the kid now. Anyway, be extra careful, even if they have 100% pos feedback, and look like they sell expensive items, look at their auction history to make sure that they have low auction cancellations. This kid had a 60% calcellation ratio.

Marlin this is the guy that constantly has trim tags for sale and markets them as ZL-1 COPO tags. I hope someone outbids you.

If he's a bad egg, I'm pulling my bid! I don't know how to pull it, but I'll figure it out!

Not sure if he is the guy that pulled the engine scam. I did recognize the seller name on your auction though. My personal feeling is I wouldn't do business with someone like this. I have a problem with guys selling trim tags. Especially when they market them as COPO or ZL1 to make more $. Not a bad price for credit card size piece of metal huh. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

Here is an example of his work.

I am so disappointed that I was not invited to this party! First of all I would like to set the record straight by saying I am not the "deadbeat seller" refered to in the original post and really don't appreciate by name and reputation being dragged through the mud on this thread. As far as DarrenX33's claim that I am the guy that "constantly" has trim tags for sale....I have sold a whooping total of two in the past three years. If you had done any checking at all you would have seen that the one you are referring to was relisted because the original buyer never paid for it. I would be willing to bet if you had a trim tag available, you would list it in a heartbeat! Who wouldn't?? It's not like I am the only person that has ever sold a trim tag...do a little digging and you will find that the desirable one's go for $250-$350. As long as there are people willing to pay that amount there will be people selling them. I have never forced anyone to bid on my items, they choose to and if you don't want to do business with me that's great!! I would like to thank you though for posting my auctions here, it has brought a lot of attention to them! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Oh and Marlin...like I said in the email I sent you, if you can't figure out how to cancel your bid I would be more than happy to oblige you!!

Have a great day and happy bidding! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Charley.gif

Here is the link to the auction with the engine I was supposed to get in it:
Ebay 427 Click Here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=33615&item=24 71969178&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT)

And no it was not "bad juju" it was chevynut1969.

Like I said, turns out he was arrested for this recently. His "daddy" is a big time lawyer up there. The "threats" have already started about "harassment" and "defamation" lawsuits. I replied that I am not going away and am going to be that that mole on his @ss, with him until he makes it RIGHT!

OK I have to know....where did the name bad juju come from ?

i tell ya, thats a shame what happened to you, i feel for you. hope you are able to get what you paid for. the trim tag issue is just pure out deception, imo. everyone knows what the intent of these tags are. if someone wants to build a clone car, and they get a good profit from the sale, than more power to them, as long as they advertise the car for what it is, but someone that will buy these tags and install them on another car and try to pass it off for anything other, that should be unlawful. i don't know the law regarding switching tags, vin plates, etc. but surely its not legal!

RE:"What did you get?"

I have not looked yet. He claims in a phone conversation that it was built to the same spec as the 427 (that I was supposed to get) below. The rockers look the same. Of course this engine has oval port heads and not rectangle.

This auction is for a Big Block Chevy 427. Block is 4 bolt main, bored 30 over, no sleeves. GM Forged Nitrided Steel Crank 10/10 Grind. GM Forged Steel 7/16 Rods. JE Forged Pistons. Childs and Albert Rings. Clevite Bearings. Full balance with harmonic balancer and Flywheel. Double Roller Timing chain. Heads are 1968 Rectangle Port Corvette 3919840. They have been lightly professionally ported and polished. GM high perf springs and valves. CAT Aluminum Roller Rockers. Comp hydraulic cam 280 duration 520/520 lift. New Head bolts. This motor was built with the “spared no expense mentality”. Never fired since rebuild. All the best ever GM stuff combined with the best aftermarket parts were installed here. This engine was built to provide many years of reliable service in your nostalgic street car.

Will run fine on pump gas. Will have a nice rumpity rump idle, but still run your vacuum accessories without special vacuum canisters etc. Engine will produce 475 horsepower and 570 ft lbs torque. If you want more power a solid cam can be installed, can get easily to 550 Horse. But, I wanted reliable power for your street rod, so a hydraulic cam will provide that. Chrome oil pan, valve covers, and timing cover. The rest of the Fel-Pro gaskets are included. All you big block guys out there know how hard it is to find these parts, I only have 1 or 2 engines like this a year, and that’s after many days searching swap meets and classified adds. Here is your chance to cut out all the down time, and have this motor on your doorstep 1 week from received payment. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif

badjuju- I apologize for the bad choice of word "constantly". I have seen you list tags with ZL1 and COPO. I defend you right to sell anything you like regardless if I agree with it or not. In this case I don't dig it and I don't think I will be looking for tags to sell myself no matter how much I can make at it. I also never titled you with "deadbeat seller".

Marlin- I also apologize to you if I misled you on this auction.

Good for you Darren! I think that a lot of people agree with you even if they won't say it. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Thanks Darren, I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't hooked up with the same guy that Rich is dealing with. I don't like seeing tags for sale on EBAY either, people buy them with a specific purpose in mind which goes against our grain.

Seller; a simple statement regarding the fact that you were not Rich's seller would have sufficed. I didn't read your email, nor did I retract my bid - I chose to stand behind my bid just in case you were legit. It looks like you are.
