Went to a local show today and saw something weird Does anybody know if Oldsmobile
Built a 71 442 W30 station wagon saw one today and I was told that it was all original
I almost got in a heated debate about it and I just walked away because I really did not know for sure but it would not seem likely that Gm did build it but never say never http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/download.php?Number=85314

I'm confused, wasn't the W30 an option for the 442? I would assume that you'd have to order a 442 wagon, if they did actually make one which I doubt, first and then add the W30 option.
I think the guy probably just added the W30 / 442 stuff to a clean wagon.

------Urban myth no.442! In reality this car was put up for auction by a bank at a Las Vegas classic car auction back in about 1992 or 3. It is an extremely nice creation. Many nice original W30 parts used. It has survived very well(actually may have been redone). It was built for a guy who made a bunch of money and then had a few problems. Bank took several of his cars to the auction. I know his name and know him but wont embarrass him. It was a put-together car then and remains a put-together car. Just for a moment think about the bucket seats. They fold forward right? Do you think that "General Motors" would release a car to the public that had 4 doors and had front seats that folded down.
--------You are going to have to trust me on this. It is a put-together car, no matter how cool it is. There are several more of these around, some good-some bad. An orange one comes to mind. The fact remains; they were all put-together!...........Bill S

Kinda like this yay-hoo from Michigan with a '70 GTX station wagon ..... 440, auto, Dana 60 rear ....

Oh wait ..... I'm that yay-hoo ..... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Yep, the 442 wagon is a put-together ...

Got this from our buddy Dave H, who started with Olds way, way back in the day:

<font color="red">They didn't make any W30 wagons on line to my knowledge. We did build some 455 flattop Cutlass Wagons in 1972, and a few of the 1970 Pace Car Wagons had all the toys, but not W30's. I've see a few put together cars over the years. Like the one guy there says: some good, some bad.

Joe Mondello tried to capitalize on his fame and name a few years back and sell of a couple of his cars. One of which he said was a W30 wagon. He was asking some gawd-awful price for it. Dave</font>

There's been one of these W30 wagons showing up at Englishtown from time to time. It wasn't blue so it was another car. Kind of a cool creation.

Oldsmobile did not produce any W-30 442 wagons. As was stated above, this is another urban legend, like the famed 71 GTO wagon, 72 GTO convertible, etc. They never made them.

We have to remember that there are people out there that just got into our hobby, they have a LOT of money to spend, and want that "1 of 1". When they see or hear of a car like a 442 wagon or GTO wagon, they believe they need to act fast before someone else buys it out from under them. Then as they get more involved in the hobby, and start talking to people at car shows or cruise nights that actually know what they're talking about, the buyer realizes that he was taken. Now the buyer is embarrassed to take their car to specific car shows (like national events) for fear of being laughed at, so they stick to local shows and cruise nights. As time goes by, they grow tired of hearing comments about their car, so they begin to fabricate a story about how "this is the only one they ever made" (probably the same line that got them to buy the car in the first place), and argue with anyone that tells them different.

Hey, that W-30 wagon is still a cool looking car, but it's a fabrication. Now I'm going out to the garage to work on my 69 Chevelle SS ZL-1. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

yo norm,
If you want to get into a disscusion about the wagon, why don't u talk to the man who owns it, not someone in the crowd. Ask your olds people about the documented gold W-30 wagon that sold in Atlantic City in 2001. Many people in Philly know of that car, Myth or not, supposedly 5-6 "wonder wagons" were made in 1971, and yes in 1972 6 wagons were at indy as pace cars for camera crews and medical staff. Have seen one and have pictures from the olds nationals of another. Real or myth why in june 04 auto trader is someone selling a 71 olds, vista cruiser, 2 seat model, full power with a 455?? They do exsist

Trigger,

First and foremost ..... nice looking wagon ! As you can see by mine, I also have an affinity for four-doors and a tailgate ! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I know from FIRSTHAND experience that there is MUCH speculation on muscle-wagons. I am VERY well aquainted with the Indy Pace Car support wagons. It is no secret that they made 455 Vista Cruiser wagons. That is FACT ! However, where the speculation gets VERY, and I mean VERY gray is when the notion of a W-30 prepared wagon comes up. I would need to see ORIGINAL documentation that completely and thoroughly articulates the W-30 package on an A-body wagon. A W-25 hood, does not a W-30 make. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I honestly don't think that anyone was slamming the car ... It is DAMN nice. When you've got something like you've got (I assume that it's yours ??), the skin has to take on an extra "thickness" ...... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

One more 1 of 1, A friend purchased a 1969 Impala SS 427 Wagon, The car had every option available including the 8 track and all of the buttons. It had a 427 390HP and a 4 speed to boot. I have never seen another like it.

Mark,

-------Not doubting what you say at all (well maybe a little), but could it just have been an Impala wagon with a 427/390 and 4yanker. Same car, and still very cool, just without the SS part. This would make a whole bunch more sense, even though I know some strange stuff has gotten out of GM. Maybe some SS emblems were attached at some time?...........Bill S

In the January 2000 issue of Muscle Car Review, there was a story about a COPO '69 Kingswood Estate wagon with an L-72 and all the options, including a luggage rack, but no air conditioning. Ran mid 12's with slicks.
I saw this car at Floyd Garrett's museum in 2002. It has all of the documentation. As they say, truth is stranger than fiction. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

That '69 Kingswood Estate wagon is a real regular option wagon ordered here in Rochester, NY at I believe Taylor Chevrolet. It's a white wagon. You couldn't have A/C with an L-72.

August '04 Hemmings Muscle Machines has a nice feature on one of the original Hurst/Olds Vista Crusiers from the Indy 500 effort that year.

I'm a HUGE long-roof (wagon) fan. Muscle wagons are even cooler.

Locally here in Washington are a couple of really neat rigs. One was a '64 Dodge 440 wagon, factory 365hp/426ci Street Wedge with 4 speed, silver on red. Everything was right except the money. I was very tempted, but he wanted restored money for a restoration project.

The holy grail for me is actually within 5 miles of me. A local Thunderbird restorer has a 1957 Ford 6 passenger Country Sedan, factory F-code 312 SUPERCHARGED. Has full history and complete documents, too. I want to own it so bad it hurts me, but only crazy money would cut it loose, as he appears to be assembling a collection of F-code cars in every body style. (T-bird, Skyliner, hardtop, 2dr sedan, 4dr sedan, wagon, etc.) I did recently get a '57 Country Sedan, but had to settle for a 292/auto.

Greg Donahue, the '63/'64 Galaxie guru/musclecar restorer, told me of a '63 R-code 427/4sp Galaxie wagon he had years ago, that he ended up PARTING OUT to make more money on it (ouch). One Ford mag had a small write-up on a '67 Ford full size wagon custom ordered with buckets and a 428/4sp drivetrain. A fellow had sportscar wants with a big family commitments, so it took an effort that got him to Lee Iacocca before his request was granted.

Keep those wagon posts coming...... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

Wagons are making a big comeback for sure. They're unique vehicles that have many unique parts/features that make them interesting and collectible, but at the same time make them cool to use and enjoy as well. Here are a few my bro snapped at the Goodguys show in DesMoines this summer.

That is possible, He was the second owner when he brought the car/wagon in 1975. It had the SS emblems on the fenders and grill, it also had the SS steering wheel shroud. White with a black gut,390 posi, rally wheels, bucket seats, console, fat sway bars front and rear. What a neat wagon to cruise down the shore in.

My buddy Jim has a pretty cool wagon that has got to be somewhat unique in it's own right. It's a '62 Falcon 2 door wagon, straight 6 with a factory 4 speed on the floor. The trans is something called a "Dagenham" which was supposedly only available in the Futura Sport Coupe. I guess the trans was manufactured in Dagenham England, so that's how it get's it's name. It's got a reverse lock out shifter just like an early Mustang, and some people have speculated that the car may have been a sort of guinea pig for Ford to test out the combo for the upcoming Mustang platform. I think that may be a bit of a stretch, but it's a cool and certainly unique car for sure. Looks like all it needs is a vintage wooden longboard hangin' out of the back. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

He is usually very good at buying, but in this instance may have gotten over-top when freshening up the car. He may also just be hoping for long money, but willing to take a bunch less. It seems that some classic dealers do work this way at times. If you had any interest in the car and hes had it as long as you say he might take a bunch less for it..........Bill S
