Being an M22 car I'm gonna guess 4.10s... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Well since you got your new toy I would go thru the whole car checking fluids---YOU should pull the rear cover off just to make sure no metal pieces are floating around--then count the teeth on the ring and pinion--Or jack up your car rotate the rear tire---ex.4:10 approimately ea. rotation of the tire would correspond to a 4.1 turn of the driveshaft etc.---If it was mine I would go thru the car---IMHO---

Already Checked that....currently it has 3:55 's so im trying to find out what actually came from the factory.

What is the dates on the ring gear? That might help to determine if the 3.55 is original or not.

Was 3.55 the standard ratio on an SS454 manual transmission car? If so, then I would say the 3.55's would be correct for a car where no "performance" or "economy" ratio was stipulated on the new car order form. Posi was an option on virtually any ratio.

If I recall, I'm sure I have seen LS-6's, let alone LS-5's, advertised with M22's and 3.31 rear end. All in the hands of the person putting in the order.

Just my two pennies worth.

Your right there should be a date on the ring and pinion gear-----

In '70 I think most of the M-22 cars got the 3.31 unless the optional 4.10 was ordered. My LS-6 conv. had the M-22 & the CRV 3.31 rear.

Yes, there is a good online site for your question. Check your rear axle code on the tube and then check this site:

http://www.chevellestuff.com/index.htm

Go to generic info, then click on axle codes/ratios. You will need to crawl under your car on the passenger side and look for the code on the front side of the axle tube. Then compare it to the code on the link above. My LS5 car with M22 has the CRV code which is 3:31.

If that axle housing is the original, relay the suffix code to us here,as well as the Rear cast date to verify.
It didn't come with 3:55,your VIN# comes up as a January date, and that is to late anyway.
The early built got a 3:55 standard or 4:10 optional.
Once the 3:31 started around the 3rd production month, the 3:55 was dropped from the line up.
It could have received either the 3:31 or 4:10 with an M22 Transmission, but because it was built with a V01 Radiator,I am leaning towards the 4:10 posi.
Seeing as this car was built at Oshawa, check with George Z. at Vintage Vehicle Services for the Factory Paperwork showing the rear RPO code.. should look something like GY2.
Georges Phone number 905-644-4060.

I'm confused...why are you claiming new ownership of this Chevelle, while it has been receiving new bids on Ebay during all this, and has only now just expired with a reserve price not met?

As always thanks for the info.

The Build Sheet has the GY2 so it came with the 3:31 from the factory.

I have no idea why the owner did not stop the auction...im assuming its because he knew it would not reach the reserve price but i own the car right now.
