While I admittedly don't know much about Z-16's, this looks nice... I don't know if I've ever seen one without a vinyl top...

Is that some kind of stereo under the center of the dash?

What a gorgeous car, same color as my old Malibu SS, great fun car to drive (at least mine was with a ZZ4 motor in it, ran into the 12's)

I'm lusting over here....!

That's a Stereo Multiplex under the Dash.Early units had a 4th far right Dummy knob.
The Vinyl Top was not inclusive of the Z16 package.Most did have it ordered,but some did not.BoB Macy,Roger Ausley,Richard Fudge,Floyd Garrets,all have/had Z16's w/o VTop.
I emailed the seller.
"This Car was built with a Vinyl top,but was restored without it.Just thought it looked better, and buyer can have the metal trim peices for it if wish."
He also says this is the ORIGINAL Engine in this Z16, Vin#5K117209 stamped on the Pad.
He Has pix from 1991 showing it before resto.

Gaud that makes me sick...!!! I could have bought a running Chevelle Z-16 with a 283 stuck in it for $1400 from a local wrecker service that was the same color. Like a fool I passed on it. This was back in 1980 or so. Who was to know.

And yes it was a real Z-16 body because it was missing the top chrome piece of trim across the back of the trunk. I had a roommate back in 1965 that ordered a 350hp blue chevelle with a 4 speed new. It came in just about the same time as the Z-16's came out. In fact he still has the car to this day.

I remember we took a quick trip to Wichita Ks. to look at a new Z-16 on the showroom floor up there because Tulsa had not gotten one yet. It was the same looking car as I had the chance to buy years later. Even the same color. They must have made a bunch that color.

There is no mention of paperwork to prove it is a Z16. It might be real but I would think lack of paperwork would hurt it's value. Nice car that I would like to own.

He does state that the car is "documented" but he doesn't say what the docs are. Still, that's one nice looking car. As for the vinyl top question, the prototype that GM photographed out at the Arizona test center in 1965 didn't have a vinyl top either.

I just found out this is indeed Terry Gunter's old Z16 Chevelle.I Knew Terry had one Identical to this, but his had a Vinyl top,so I didn't think this was his. When this car was restored they opted to leave the VT off.Terry was owner number 9,& sold this Z16 in 1991.Only 3 Crocus yellow Z16's have been found ordered without Vinyl top. This ain't one of em.

I am not old enough to remember when these cars were on the road. Here is the TRUE story my Dad told me years ago. In 1965 when the Z-16 was released a pair of brothers had the dealer in Hicksville, OH (Decker Chevrolet at the time I think) get them 2, yes 2 Z-16's. One was red and one was black. Dad said that they beat the snot out of both of the cars. One was repoed and the other sold and is long gone. It amazes me that such a small town had 2 of the rarest Chevelles produced. In about 1984 we found a Z-16 in Lyons, OH sitting in front of a house trailer. We had been hearing stories about it, and one day Dad said lets go for a drive. I still remember Dad almost crashing when he saw the car. We talked to the owner and he said he had a list of names on his icebox of people who wanted to buy the car. I remember Dad asking him what he tought he wanted for the car and he said around $5000. WHAT A MISTAKE!!!! Should have bought it right on the spot. It need totally restored, but we should have still bought it. There are my Z-16 stories. Anyone else have any of there own????
Brian

P.S.-The little brother of the Z-16 owners bought a brand new yellow 1966 L-79 Nova. He sold that in 1969 to a guy who still ownes it to this day and is in the process of restoring it.

No pictures, just photographic memories. The car in Lyons,OH was black at the time we found it. I am not sure if that was the original color or not??
